It seems that full partouts (esp including drive lines in good shape: m20s, m42s, g260s, and 3.73 LSDs) have been less common the past few months. Pool drying up, folks selling as full project cars given the trend in asking prices and the pull of prices being paid for pristine ones, or just holding on to them?

This is exactly why I am real hesitant about doing anything drastic to my car. I know its not the nicest car out there but a stock unmolested iS is becoming hard to find.

i don't understand someone asking $21k for an e30 m3 needing paint when it has an M20 in it and he's selling it as a candidate for an S50 swap. The value of an E30 M3 sinks like a rock if it has any sort of swap whatsoever, in terms of the collectible-level prices it has achieved as of late.

At this point you may as well buy a regular E30 and save the money. This guy wants way too much for his car.

Ignore the m20 and the seller's swap suggestion for the moment. The bigger picture is that with the stupid price escalation of e30 m3s in good condition ($30-40k) and pristine up to $80-90k there is an upward pull on all things e30 m3. Rolling shells have appeal even needing work, and there are buyers out there. For example http://www.ebay.com/itm/262313105535 (though from other threads we know that until the money is in hand, and ebay sale is just an ebay sale)

All that said, I'm with you that the absence of an s14 seriously hurts the value... and why oh why would someone drop an m20 in an e30 M3????

Found it in a field with a dead s14 and had an m20 laying around to just get the car on the road. That's about the only sane reason

Swapping out an S14 for an M20 makes sense to me. There are fewer valves so technically less could go wrong, valve adjustments would be completed more quickly (time is money), and the engine code has an "M" to match the badge on the trunk.

There you go. Plus you could buy many m20 engines (between 10 to 20, or a Metric Mechanic Baby SixM20 beast and a stock m20 or two) to have as swap in spares for the price of one S14 in good shape and/or the S14 major repair bills.
