The timing chains stretch or the tensioners fail and they're located on the back of the engine. My BIL is selling his A6 2.7t next Friday and he's been looking at S4's but doesn't want another 2.7t and doesn't want the payment associated with buying a B8 S4. He's also very willing to pull the engine and do the work to prevent grenading. He's a VAG guy through and through. He's also considered some 2.0t's but then I may have encouraged the V8 by sending him video clips of B6/B7 S4's with aftermarket exhausts. One of the first things I did to mine when I bought it was bavauto springs and matching Bilsteins.
