DrLeadFoot
#1 rod bearing. Can I just replace the bearing or do I have to pull the crank? There are no signs of brass or copper (whatever the next metal layer is) it just looks shiny. The top bearing looks the same. #ohgod#2#3#4#5#6Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
DrLeadFoot
To top it off I need to put a new timing/oil chain sprocket on the crank. Some of the teeth are chipped. Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
B C
Id at least put plastigage in there to see what the clearance is and if the plastigage narrows up over the visibly worn section Im sure jc or jeff would have better info since they have experience rebuilding 24v engines
jc43089
I will have to wait until I get home from work today to look at the pics, stupid work network blocks most hosted pictures. Unless the crank is damaged you shouldn't have to pull it to replace rod bearings. To get the mains out you would have to remove the crank though. Definitely check clearance with plastigage, I think it should be .0018-.0022, I can check in my Bentley tonight. That's not going to be fun to replace the sprocket, its one piece I think with the cam drive sprocket. At least your crank bolt was loose already DrLeadFoot
DrLeadFoot
I'm not too daunted by the sprocket for that reason! My only worry with that is getting to the front cover bolts underneath the cam shafts to remove the cover. Thanks for the help guys. You're my bimmer angels.Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
jc43089
Only the first one looks bad, does the crank have a mark there? I would get a new set and install them. Check with plastigage when you put them in, did you pull any of the mains?
DrLeadFoot
Quick question, which way does the motor rotate when looking at it from the front? Quick update: Ordered a new oil chain and crank sprocket today. I will be ordering bearings tomorrow. That's all I got for now. Thanks for looking. DrLeadFoot
Bearings ordered. BOOM!! well, hopefully not this time around. I wish making this car reliable was as easy as ordering parts. Everything I need is here or on its way this week to get this bolted back up ASAP the right way this time around. Now for some thinking out loud: I have been debating on going to a softer engine/trans mount to combat the vibes. The vibes are both good and bad. Good for me, bad for the bimmer. If I go MS3 I would use the S52 timing pickup that is in the engine block to reduce the rotating mass of the OBD 1 harmonic balancer timing pickup. Some properly offseted wheels to accommodate a lot of rubber so I'm gripping instead of bouncing the motor of the rev limiter every time acceleration is extreme. If you know my name this is almost every time the right foot is on that GO pedal. I will be borderline living underneath the rear suspension and in the trunk, watching for cracks and signs of stress, once there are bigger tires on there. Hopefully the girlfriend will want to join me. There are more thoughts but the motor needs to be in the front of my mind.

DrLeadFoot
Anyone have a Bentley manual and can look up what the spec is for the gap between the rod bearings and the journal is? Going to plastic gauge them soon.
jc43089
Both main and rod bearings should be .0008 - .0023" clearance measured with plastigage. DrLeadFoot

DrLeadFoot
Is it .008-.023? .0008 seems really tight and plastic gauge doesn't go that small.
B C
A sheet of paper is ~0.003" thick to have something from the real world you can relate to Pete McHenry suggests ".0020"-.0025", with half a thousandth looser on the rear main" per this post here http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?775356-Main-Bearing-Clearances DrLeadFoot
jc43089
IIRC Mine were about .0018. Use the green that goes from .001-.003". DrLeadFoot
DrLeadFoot
Plastic gauge day!Wet sanded the #1 journal with this new-ish 3M paper that is equal to 1200 grit and 5w-30 to get rid of the slight scratch that I could feel with my finger.A little Vaseline to hold it in place.Got this bad boy dialed in to 25ft/lbs and 55 degrees.Looks to be .001!!
