buy the motor, stuff it in, than worry about fixing stuff/refreshing later. the point is to drive these cars, right? or am i doing it wrong?
you won't have done any extra work this way. youll just have the pull the motor one time in the future for your refresh.

my car has a wibimmer sticker on the side window, the gas tank is held up with a ratchet strap, has front end damage, rust, a spray-painted window banner, a cherry bomb, fuel pump wires running through the passenger door, and runs snow all summer long.

"car enthusiast" stickers on Kias and Hyundias is dumb. Sure, we "all had to start somewhere", but that doesn't mean that those of us who have been interested in cars for more than a few weeks should care. Nor does it make a Kia a car worth being enthusiastic about.
