I gave the ol google machine a whirl on cosmoline removal and its comical how many things are claimed to work but dont and everyone’s secret tricks from the gun world

“My granpappy has the secret recipe: ya gotta mix kerosene with marvel mystery oil and acetone and then put it in a garbage bag covered for a few hours, then fire up a steam cleaner and then soda blast it, then it will come right off!” Etc.

I ended up throwing the covers in the dishwasher then when i pulled them out, spent an hour or so with Goof Off, paper towels and elbow grease. As tedious as it was, I was able to get some results.

I think I prefer the look of the engine without the fuel rail cover so I will leave that one off.

I cut a hole in the wiring harness cover for the diagnostic connector and ran a nut and bolt through the battery tray for part of its mounting scheme. That section is now permanently mounted.

Looks like I will have to put a dang corset on the wiring bundle and get all the kings men to tighten it up because there is still some work to do before the main section of harness cover will fit.

My buddy came over and finished pulling the motor on Friday night. I removed the twin turbos on Saturday morning to be shipped to their new owner. Sad, because they had less than 500 miles on them.

    Then my finger slipped...

Nothing irrational about wanting a 7er. Fantastic cars. I had an e32 way back when. That thing hauled ass and you never even knew it, so smooth. Sold it due to the transmission being on its way to it's death bed. They are dirt cheap, but expensive to fix and most people don't maintain them very well. Most of them at one time or another were owned by a rapper wanna be or something of the sorts.
I'll own one again done the road.

Got my gift yesterday. Came in a pretty cool tube. The contents of this tube was a pretty awesome print of the M series that have been made over the years and an e30 decal. Will get this up as soon as it flattens out. I have the perfect spot in the office for it.

A big thanks to peter AKA p_roloff

Quite the opposite actually, I don't think we want to disappoint each other by sending a late gift.  Now, when it comes to finishing projects, that's a whole other conversation!

I'm not really interested in arguing over what constitutes a "real" driving event, my point is that its a fun car event that involves driving and not parking.

I've given up.  I tell my wife that I want an ECS gift card so I can buy parts myself.  It's to the point where a few of our family members are frustrated every year because what I want is "boring".  I continue to tell my wife that if she doesn't want to give me what I want then stop asking and get me whatever she wants or tell people to get me whatever they feel like.  My whole Christmas list (yes I still make a list, not by choice) consists of ECS gift card, Blackhawk Farms Raceway gift card and various tools or car related clothes.  I liken it to any other hobby.  You might not "get it" but if someone wants another My Little Pony for their collection then damn it, you buy that grown man the My Little Pony they want!
I will say, my dad is not really a "car guy".  He's owned F150's my whole life because it was practical for him and his work.  He likes cars but never had the means to afford a fun car.  A few years back he had a 2006 F150 XLT with the 5.4l that he had purchased new.  It was the nicest truck he had ever owned!  Anyways, it was Christmas time maybe 2009ish.  He was still trying to get his painting business off the ground, my parents had been divorced for a couple years but they just sold the house, him and I were living in a tiny, run down house and we were both broke.  He was kinda down and kept telling me he didn't need anything for Christmas.  When Christmas came he gave me a PS3 with a $100 Best Buy gift card that came with it.  I was thrilled!  He used some of his share of the house sale to buy it for me!  When I handed him a card he was appreciative of the thought then he opened it... a piece of paper fell out... he unfolded it and it was a picture of a K&N CAI.  He looked confused and looked up at me and that's when I told him that I had ordered the intake for him and I'd install it but it was on back order at the moment so I didn't have it to wrap for him.  His eyes lit up like I hadn't seen in a long time and he gave me a big hug!  I installed it when it came and he was like a little kid!  He told all of his friends about the CAI and how it really brought that engine to life and the noises it made.  To this day he still tells people about that.  Easily the best Christmas gift he's ever received.

Two very serious, period modified e21's built by guys who were, and maybe still are, big names in modded BMWs:

So this finally happened! My radiator hoses are not great, they are spliced together out of two different hoses both top and bottom.
I also don't have power steering yet because the mounting stuff is different, but driving it without power steering is surprisingly okay. So I need to figure out what I want to do there.
I'll also probably order the real radiator hoses, and need to get a late model expansion tank in the car because the current one is sketchy at best!
The clutch is also slightly odd, it was an e46 setup, and I'm not quite sure what's going on.

In short, it's got kinks yet, but I got to do fun stuff.

Chapter 15: The wild goose chase

Cliff’s Notes: was running on 4 cylinders, determined 1 coil is bad and 1 injector was stuck. Injector un-stuck and now running on 5 cylinders until i get a new coil

Kaiser is a good guy. He sent his ECU for me to try out. After plugging it in I expected to fire it up and hear all 6 cylinders running. But it still ran on 4.

The last piece of the puzzle should be the injectors.

The misfire was on cyl 2 and 3 so i moved those injectors to 1 and 4 and sure enough the misfire followed.

I felt a bit ripped off since back in july when i bought the engine they were working fine and i had sent them off to be cleaned and tested by a reputable injector shop.

I pulled the bad injectors out as well as 1 known good one for reference I checked the resistance. All were good at approximately 14 ohms.

So i connected the injectors to a 12v power supply (jumper box) and checked for solenoid clicking.

The good injector clicked, one of the “bad” injectors did not. I kept applying voltage and it suddenly started clicking. All 6 injectors were now clicking when manually applying power to them. So I put the injectors back in and expected to fire it up and hear all 6 cylinders.

    Nope.

BUT WE UPGRADED TO RUNNING ON 5 CYLINDERS

So i checked the remaining “bad” injector. Hmm it isnt bad at all. It ends up being a bad coilpack even though I bought all 6 brand new, Bremi brand (OEM). Moving it to other cylinders as well as a resistance test confirmed it was bad. It measures 40 ohms on the outer 2 pins when a good coil should be

Now in hindsight it can see that the 2 dead cylinders were from 1 stuck injector and 1 bad coil instead of 2 bad injectors as originally thought.

I just need to replace the coil and I should be in business

5 out of 6 aint bad

I had a busy day outside of the garage but i was able to finish up the last items that I needed to do before putting the intake manifold on. This mostly consisted of getting all the power steering limes situated. The adapter i bought for the pump worked out, i had to shorten both low pressure lines for the new PS reservoir location.

The low pressure line that connects to the rack was not going to allow the hose to connect to the reservoir. I pulled this banjo fitting (left) off the spare e36 pump i had and am using it instead of the E30 line (right). It works much better and im happy with my hydraulic line situation, although i dont want to touch them ever again. Hate those things.

The manifold is torqued down. I just have to connect the icv hose, evap hose, intake/maf, and coilpack ground straps and i will be ready to fire it up. I am at a christmas party now so i will have to finish it up tomorrow around 4p
