perhaps as a show piece, but I guarantee that wing is functional and the engineers of that car have it at the correct spot for proper downforce at speed. I would leave everything where they put it.

dyno is about gains from stock-to-wherever you are currently modded, not top numbers. Mustang dynos aren't inaccurate at all, assuming you compare apples to apples and always use the same dyno for the same car whenever you want to see a change in power from a mod as a percentage.

Any dyno, including a heartbreak (mustang) dyno, can be fabricated to produce large numbers but they are still going to all be relative if you ran the same car bone stock on the same dyno with the same configuration. I could have a dynojet show my car making 600 hp but that doesn't mean anything in isolation.

now are you coming to some god damn cars and coffee or not?!

Well it's been awhile since I have updated this.  A lot of plans that I had for the car are put on hold due to the amount that I had to spend on repairing a misfire.

    The misfire:

I had a severe misfire under load.  At first I thought it was tune related since the misfire seemed to have started right after I switched from an e85 mix map to a regular map.  I tried reloading the tune, resetting the tune, etc.  This did nothing.  I turned off the auto clear function and drove the car for a bit until the SES light came on.
-According to procede there was still no code besides the exhaust flapper so I tried scanning with my Autel and only had the flapper and catalyst efficiency codes (both due to mods).  I used my work scan tool to try and pull BMW related codes and received the same.
-From here I ran some data logs.  What I could find from the data logs is that I had a misfire (duh) but unsure of what cylinder it was on.  Procede does not have a misfire pid or smooth running value.  I utilized STFT's to determine I had a misfire and it was primarily on bank 2.
-At this point I started the physical inspection.  I started by checking any and all connections as well as performing a "wiggle" test on all components.  The wiggle test is a technical term of course.  With the car running I wiggled any and all connections I could find to see if this made a difference in the way the car ran.  Nothing.
-After that inspection I started to disassemble and inspect parts.  I started with the obvious, spark plugs.  As I pulled each coil I inspected it for any signs of cracking in the boot or discoloration inside the boot and ohmed each one looking for consistency.  All coils tested fine.
-Each spark plug was pulled and showed no signs of failure. (less thank 10k miles on them)
-Each injector was pulled for a physical inspection and showed no physical signs of failure.
-As I had each injector pulled I reconnected them to the rail without putting them in the cylinder and left them unplugged.  I cranked the car to add rail pressure and hoped to see an injector leaking but had no such luck.  At this point I was looking for a 100% guarantee that the injectors had gone bad before I ordered them.

At this point I had a bad feeling that my injectors had failed due to the drivability symptoms and the physical inspection of other components.  I was able to try another set of coils and this did nothing to resolve the issue.  I ponied up and bought the updated injectors (index 12) for about $1537 from ECS.  For those who don't know, BMW essentially has 2 "styles" of DI injectors.  They have index 1-10 which is the old style and they have 11+ for the new style.  1-10 can be mixed and 11+ can be mixed but you cannot mix the two styles.  This means replacing all of them at once.  The injectors are also coded to each cylinder.  This is done because the ecu is sensitive to the differences in impedance in the injector.

-Installation of the injectors is extremely easy.  If you can change your spark plugs you can change the injectors.  The only thing you need to do is write down the values that are on the injectors before you install them so you can code each injector to that cylinder.
-Coding the injectors is also very easy... once you have the program working.  From what I can gather, BMW has basically used the same program for years now and just updates it when they add new vehicles.  Unfortunately this means that the program has to run on 32-bit windows and nothing newer than Vista.  I tried 3 different lap tops before I was able to get it to work on my laptop with Windows 8.  Do not ask me how because I honestly have no idea.  I have never had so many problems trying to load and use a program.  It works for the most part now but is in about 95% German.  I am still trying to work with this program so I can code functions but as it stands now I can only code injectors.

After coding the injectors the car sputtered for a minute at idle then smoothed out.  I took her for a drive and she ran perfect.  This whole ordeal has never had me so frustrated with any car.  It seriously made me consider selling the car and buying anything else.  Now that it has been over a month and nothing else has come up then I would say I have calmed down and I am again deeply in love with the N54 but i'd be lying if I said I wasn't still a little nervous.

Jordan (i_love_cars) put it in perspective for me once we went over every common fail item that I have replaced since I bought the car a year ago.  Every common fail item has been replaced on this car now and it should be smooth sailing and regular maintenance/upgrades from here on out!

Skip the pink horns, legacy owners are all about their badges

Jordan, make sure to get the LGBT badge so people know its a Legacy GT. It features multiple concentric arcs which denote the Legacy GT's superior skidpad performance

I dont consider it stanced either but when an E30 is above fair market value, the reason is the mandatory stance tax from the RWD Tax Act of 2004. Overpriced 240sx, and ae86 are subject to a similar mandatory drift tax under the same legislation. I dont make the rules.

awesome pickup! We must be on the same wavelength cuz I'm flying out to Maryland on the 21st to pick up a 2005 legacy GT limited (sadly not a wagon, though). I considered a couple of those SAABARUS in my search but couldn't find anything as clean as what I found in the legacy GT space

i_love_cars got a reaction from patsbimmer1 in Car Show Mini-Rant
Honestly, the cars are only part of the reason to go in the first place. I largely attend car shows to talk to people. There are always enough enthusiasts there for me to talk to that I can easily tune out any peripheral noise from plain-jane stock cars.

There is still a part of me, however, that when I see a run-of-the-mill shitbox parked on the lot among the cars for show, in my head goes "wtf are you doing son, gtfo", and mainly my point there is just park your shitty econobox or family sedan away from the main show area so you don't clutter up the space with something nobody really wants to see. Then come in and talk to people about cars and enjoy yourself.

Ironically, Brian you brought your minivan to the E30 meet and got upset when they made you park it far away. To me, parking your beat out minivan (as comical as it is) next to a bunch of E30s at a show dedicated to E30s/BMWs in general is no different than the clown with a stock E60 528 trying to roll with a bunch of modified/enthusiast cars at a show. The main difference is that you aren't trying to polish your turd and show it off - you know it's a turd.

i_love_cars got a reaction from patsbimmer1 in Vehicle hacking, it was inevitable.
every alternative to CAN bus uses some sort of messaging protocol to control devices in the car. CAN bus is 20+ years old so it still operates on some low level command processing, which is what these guys were using to control the vehicle. The only reason it hasn't been done until recently was due lack of networking into cars from satellites and wifi and shit. Now that there is a gateway in to the car, companies need to secure their messaging systems. Most technology today revolves around APIs that just provide an abstraction layer for accessing data and operations on the device. But that layer needs to be secured. Think of it simply like a car's basic operations as a web API would look like:

    http://shittyGMproducts/ChevyVolt/drive/accelerate
    http://shittyGMproducts/ChevyVolt/drive/brake
    http://shittyGMproducts/ChevyVolt/power/startBatteryOnFire

This is how most software developers are going to interact with ECU systems because the code that actually runs the electronics in the car is all super low-level machine code. That's why re-flashing an ECU with a Cobb takes so long.

I work with a guy who did some work at GM years ago and he took over control of an employee's Chevy Volt with his laptop in a matter of hours.

Most of these systems are like "once you're in, you're in" so if you can get into the car, you can do anything. Car manufacturers need to up their game to secure things at a more granular level rather than making assumptions. It's no different than bush-league security on any other type of product. Except for the fact that potential ramifications are much more lethal.

This is why information security people are getting paid, like, ridiculous amounts of money in 2015 if they are good. Ridiculous amounts of money.

I don't understand the whole "my car looks like a shitbox, so it's worth more money" thing. IMO a run of the mill e30 needing paintwork shouldn't ever be anywhere over $2k.

They make sure the bank gets paid first. If that impala has any bar code stickers in the windows, you can be sure it's a rental. If that's the case, you know his vehicle is in the body shop.
