yes, you will get gear rattle in any gearbox when you have a lightweight single mass flywheel. It is an inevitability. Multiplate clutches make their own weird noises. Manual transmissions always have and always will be just a little bit clunky in certain conditions. I was always curious to see if Redline shockproof oil would cushion the gears and reduce the noise. Ultimately its the same reason why it’s stupid to run a solid flex disk or “guibo” which the entire damn world spells incorrectly and I will never forgive them. Lets all agree to call it a flex disk and never say anything that rhymes with guido.
Engine power output is in pulses and the deceleration between pulses opens up the gear lash. This is less prominent with a heavier flywheel as there is less deceleration between pulses. It’s happening in every gearbox, just less noticable/audible. The dual mass flywheel eliminates this.

Embrace the fact that its manual. Dont expect perfection. Install a really good shifter, freshen up everything you can, and make the experience of rowing gears as magical as it can be.

I had an m20 flywheel lightened, resurfaced, and balanced by C&S in Butler.
it wasnt cheap, but machining the ring off the back of the flywheel gets you somewhere close to 13 lb.
You will have gear rattle in neutral but it revs nice

I have seen this car posted for sale multiple times over the last 10 years starting out looking mint with 70k on it. The previous owner seems to have let it go mechanically/cosmetically. It was for sale 3 weeks ago for $1700, not running, in oconomowoc I believe. It has been cleaned up a lot for this current ad

    thanks everyone.
was hard to watch it go, but it went to a nice guy who is a BMW enthusiast (not a local). he had previously bought an e30 convertible, and it wasnt quite the sports car he hoped. When he got in this thing it was about 1 min till he was sold that this is what he was dreaming about in an e30.
thank you. put about 30,000 fun miles on it in 5 years.
i've said this in the past, but if any of you ever hear or see me driving a mini-van, please just set it on fire for me. It'd be ok if I was still inside.

    not a runner:
Could be a nightmare of a project or it could be a chance to do the “while you’re in there” stuff and come out the other side with a reasonably reliable car.

I've been totally MIA as landscaping is now done and I'm trying to get the garage as close to "done" as I can before the snow flies. So before it gets too late in the season I want to get this going. Last week on Friday I took a day to go west of Madison and make a new route towards Mt. Horeb/Spring Green area which I unfortunately discovered was wayyyyy too long. That's what happens when you go on Google earth and just start point/clicking on roads. I am going to cultivate that - next year in 2022 I will lead a cruise out that way based on my findings. AS FOR 2021, we will be stuck in the Holy Hill area doing one of my more normal routes.
I am looking to do a group cruise on October 2nd.
Meet up at my house in Lisbon just south of Hwy Q off of Lake Five rd. I am kicking around a couple of options that people can vote on.
Option 1: Arrive anytime between 9 and 10:30, cruise starting no later than 11 a.m. on a route that is roughly 60-90 minutes. I will have coffee for those who want it. Arrive back at my house by 12:30-1 where I can have smoked ribs ready for everyone (i can do like 6 or 7 racks at a time on my smoker which should be plenty for our group). I have a loaded up fridge with a couple hundred cans of good ass fuckin beer at any given time, and enough seating outside on my patio for everyone. When we get back from the cruise I could toss some hot dogs on or something cuz those are super fast to cook, if anyone doesn't like pork ribs.
Option 2: Same as option 1, except instead of eating lunch at my house, we go 2 minutes up the road to Joe Mama's off of Hwy Q which has outdoor seating and good food, but decidedly more Harleys and annoying truck bros. Choose this option if you don't want to eat any smoker food or if you just hate me.
Option 3: Similar to option 1, except show up late morning at like 11 or 11:30 and eat lunch at my place, then we do a cruise starting at maybe 1 which could be extended driving up towards Road America and back, probably closer to a 2.5-3 hour cruise instead of the more local 60-90 minute around Holy Hill. This option is of course better for driving, you still get to eat good smoked food, but it does chop up people's Saturday more since it's like, basically from 11 until 4 or 5 p.m.
@B C you are welcome to drive my E46
I will probably for sure have Stuart involved as well although he's not on the forums anymore - he will probably drive my E92 or Z4, and I will drive whichever car he doesn't.
I have another long-time friend who isnt a BMW guy but he lives 3 minutes away and we have done lots of cruises/track events together and he will be in. So I probably have 3-4 people I know will be in to start with - trying to get a head count for who else would be committed to October 2nd.
I have a 2-day track event at RA on Oct 16-17 so that weekend is out. Soccer tournaments for the kids most other weekends. As such I'm not going to provide an alternate day. October 2nd or bust.

This past weekend we had 2 of my wife's friends stay at the house with their kids and husbands.  On Saturday the girls went to get their nails done and go to a beer garden in Waukesha and they took the M3.  When they got back my wife said her friends need to drive the car but were "afraid" so I spent the rest of the day egging them on.  On Sunday one of the girls was ready so I threw her in the drivers seat and we went for a drive.  She eventually fell in love with it and spent the rest of the weekend asking to drive it anywhere so we put a few more miles on it.  Her other friend drove it but it was too stressful of an event and she was done after one drive lol.
This is one of the reasons I bought a DCT.  I love handing my keys to someone and letting them rip!  It's even more fun when they've never really driven a sports car.  With a 6 speed there is a barrier to entry that scares people away.  You have to want to drive a manual trans AND have one available to learn on.  The DCT is a terrible automatic but the fact it can shift on it's own takes one barrier down.
It also made me think about why these girls were "afraid" to drive my car.  They kept saying they're afraid they'd hurt the car.  It made me ask more then we got to the root.  They know how much I love the car and they don't want to be responsible for disappointing me.  Also, the perception that it's a terribly expensive car if something did get damaged scared them.  I had to go above and beyond to assure them it's a car, I have insurance and they can't hurt it.  I took them for a drive and they saw how I drive.  They won't be harder on it than I already am.
This also reminds me that it just takes once to get someone hooked.  One time behind the wheel to spark something you didn't know you had in you.  It's one thing to always be a passenger and enjoy a ride but to have the opportunity to push the pedal and control the noises coming out of the exhaust pipe is a whole different experience.  The friend who enjoyed it spent the rest of the weekend asking me about how to get into a car of her own like this and convincing her husband that it's do-able.

    TL;DR - Don't be a dick.  Share the keys.

    145amp truck alternator going in!
2 weeks ago I finally popped in the Drives Shaft Shop Level 5 700hp Axles.  They are not direct bolt in for this '89 325is. Had to remove the ABS ring and grind down a manufacturing "bump" on the inside of the hub for them to fit.  This involves mounting, removing the axle and grinding 10-ish times to get the clearance right. The output shafts are SUPER beefy.  Out of a 930 Porsche I think?
Cut off some more fenders to try and stop the tires rubbing.  I think it worked 💪

Had BMW Milwaukee North Body Shop install and paint new oem BMW rear glass and rear hatch.  Also, added a carbon fiber spoiler.
Popped on some Pilot Sport 4S but ordered 255 rears instead of 275.  Well, popped a rear tire on Mother's day with the family so I fortunately got to get the 275 rears mounted!  The Mobile Tire Pit Crew is the JAM!  They come to your house and mount and balance on their truck.  Worth every penny!
Wagon is running great!  Pumping gas weekly, topping off oil biweekly and smiling daily 😄

Still have to seam seal and undercoat the underside, but I'm very happy with it. Shifts through all gears like it should.
I have to get a new black leather shift boot instead of the grey one I found at the u-pull. Also, once this whole project is wrapped up, this thing is getting a full interior detail for sure. Yikes!!!
