The brochures are nice, but a good set set of picks is super nice to have around too. Definitely a tool that you wouldn't necessarily think to buy, but comes in handy more often than you would guess.

Agreed, picks are the unsung heroes of diy maintenance. Stick a magnet on it and you can use it to pick up small bolts and nuts too. My old set has most of the tips broken off by now so this was perfect timing.

  2. So I went and test drove a 2011 328xi wagon today, and while I enjoyed the overall interior/exterior look and seat comfort (sport seats in saddle brown) I was left feeling a bit cold in terms of the ride. I wasn’t really impressed with the body control even compared to the e34, and I was wondering if anyone here had any experience driving both standard and sport suspension e90’s and if they had any thoughts on how much of a difference it made.

I’m also wondering how much worn suspension components may have had to do with it, the car had 100k miles and I believe everything was original. Any comments on shock/bushing life on these cars?

Side note: I also took a drive in a 2011 S5 at a nearby dealer while I was in the area, and holy smokes. I don’t know what I was expecting, but that car exceeded pretty much every expectation I had with the exception of the light steering and a few low-quality buttons. The brakes stood out to me most of all, they’re definitely filling launchers. It had a very nice interior also, great power, nice sound, and in my eyes it looked drop dead gorgeous. Scares me though as far as running costs.

  3. I ordered my gift over a week and half ago, and while it was projected to arrive today, it looks like the tracking number provided through eBay isn’t even active yet on the USPS site 🙃 I apologize in advance, one of you is going to get a belated gift. I’ll be tossing in some stroopwafels as an apology. I will be messaging the seller to see what the deal is tonight.

  4. I can’t comment for sure on the rest of the seat and the mechanisms, but the lever to fold the seat for back seat access is different from the one in my vert. Otherwise, all the other handles, bolsters, seams and everything looks to be identical.

Edit: took a quick look, found this thread: https://www.r3vlimited.com/board/forum/e30-technical-forums/m3-technical-discussion/364894-m3-interior-question

Looks like they’re slightly different in handle type and location, but otherwise they’re the same.

  5. Someone go buy this... manual awd e46 sedan, claimed to be rust free.

What in the actual fuck is this steering wheel? Make sure you check out the headliner too, I missed it the first time I saw the ad

Those are the most useless 'nice' car-for-sale pictures I've ever seen

I know, if he hadn't specifically mentioned that the car was blue, I never would've known. Not a single decent picture of the interior or anything, and I'm pretty sure the alpina reps are painted white? Still a cool car, but I'd be a bit wary of what the ad and pictures hide. I can't even tell if the panel gaps are decent.

  7. Replaced the resistor tonight, fan works on all speeds. Success! Except, for some reason, it runs even when the fan speed is set to 0. It sounds like there is a slight speed difference from 1 to 0, makes me think it’s a short somewhere rather than a bad switch or something. Anybody had a similar experience? I think for now I’ll just pull the fuse during the summer when I don’t use the heater to prevent excess wear on the motor, I don’t particularly care to dig through the wiring harness to fix it.

It worked straightaway. Keep track of the gears as you take them apart - or take a picture before you disassemble. When I replaced my gears I also reset my odometer back to zero to reflect my rebuilt engine since the actual mileage of the car was completely unknown.

Thanks for the advice, I'll make sure to do that. Where'd you buy the replacements from?

I would order the whole odometer gear set. When I took mine apart all of the gears were mushy. If I only replaced one gear it would have failed instantly right away.

Good to know. Will do. Did the complete replacement get it working correctly again, or did you have issues?

I attempted to replace mine and failed. It made no difference so I think the board itself was bad. Welcome to the broken odometer club. I attempted to repair the odometer gears and it ended up working maybe 1 out of every 90 miles.

it makes for some really depressing fuel economy calculations

Yeah, I'm hoping the gear repair works. I've heard some horror stories on the main forums about similar problems to yours, broken motors, new gears stripping after a few miles, etc. I love actually having an odometer though, so I think I'd just go find a used working cluster, change the mileage to match mine, and run with it. Something about seeing the miles tick away...

SI board is way less important, but would be cool to have working.

  11. Odometer: 200,407

Didn't post an update when I put the car back together, but got it back on the road two weekends ago. LOT of air in the lines, took two full bleedings and a few hours to get it all out and even still, I think there might be a small bubble somewhere so I'll give it one more go-round next weekend when I'm back home again. Might have to invest in a power bleeder.

Picked up a good condition used blower motor about a month ago from a 70k mile Z3 and tossed that in at the same time, aaaand of course it only works on high. Me being me, I didn't even think about grabbing the resistor out of the Z3. New one is getting here tomorrow and will go in next weekend as well.

It also appears that I have a habit of jinxing myself, because when I took the car for a shakedown after the brake repair, the odometer decided it was done odometering. Guess that's what I get for posting a picture of the 200k mile mark lol. I did approximately 200 miles that weekend and will continue to record approximate mileage until it gets fixed. If I have time next weekend, I'll pull the cluster to see which gear stripped and get it on order, and check the SI board battery type as well. My SI lights have never worked and I'm assuming that's the reason, but I'm no expert. Anyone else here ever deal with the battery replacement and have advice or tips? I do plan on having Batteries Plus do the actual replacement so I don't risk damage to the batteries or the board.

This was an absolute blast and the e30 did wonderfully. Thanks again for letting me drive it--it was a pleasure!

Hands down the best automotive enthusiast-related event I've done.

This was going to be my question, what did you guys think of the rally? Worth doing it? Where did the rally route run?
