dastuz got a reaction from Ryan... in 2002 E46 M3 For Sale (Slicktop - Trackday Car) 90K Miles - $17,700
*For those more active members, this is the known as the loudest E46 M3 around
For sale is my 2002 BMW M3 (E46). This is a slicktop model (no sunroof). I have been unable to find reliable data about the rarity of slicktop models, but anecdotaly they appear to be quite rare. The motor has stock internals (minus the prior owner having the bearing recall done). It has 90,000 original miles on the car. The oil is changed every 1,000 miles with Redline's 10W 60 Oil. Transmission and differential both have Redline's own brand of high temp fluids. The car is definitely loud both in sound and appearance. The low stance, big tires, racing seats, and dark rims get looks and comments wherever it goes. I have roughly $30,000 into the vehicle (not including the purchase price – see below). I have built the car to almost track day specifications. A cage or harness bar would be the final piece of that build.
Engine -The car runs strong and has no engine issues. The catless header does cause O2 codes – see exhaust section below
Body - the body is in fair condition - the car is not a show car it has some minor scratches/nicks.  Kidney grill and side vents were swapped from chrome to black
Interior – the interior of the car is the part of the build I did not finish. I gutted the car for track day usage. The speakers, amplifier, radio, etc. have all been removed. I did not delete any of the wires in the harness, so someone could reconnect or remove those unused wires. My car suffered from the E46 painted trim issues. It bubbled and cracked. I got a coverup kit for it, but I would recommend buying the new trim pieces. I still have much of the interior in storage – Stock seats, OEM rims and tires, intake, etc. if someone wishes to go back to a full interior. The largest item that would need to be purchased would be the carpet.
Handling -The car drives very well. The suspension and set up makes the car handle very well. Please note that the suspension, bushings, seat, and tires mean that the ride is more track oriented. The car is very stiff!
    History / Full Disclosure
The vehicle suffered a crash at Blackhawk Farms a few years ago. After this crash I had the driver side front fender touched up, the hood touched up, bought a new front bumper with new bumper shocks, had a new OEM trunk installed, had the passenger rear quarter panel and tail light pocket completely rebuilt, and bought a new rear bumper and bumper bar. When I had the front of the car apart I upgraded the radiator, the water pump, thermostat, and oil cooler. I took the vehicle to International Autos for a complete scan on their body scan system to confirm that the “safety box” of the vehicle was unchanged and square. It was confirmed that it was square and fully intact. All of the body work was performed by a professional. There is no record of the accident on the vehicle history report (carfax) as the incident was not reported to the officials (accident was on a racetrack not on a roadway)

It's exactly that but the doppler system used has zero reliance on the material its tracking to be effective.  Whether you have a metal plate on the front of your car has zero to do with the fact that you are driving a large object.  Now, where radar does fail is if you are driving in a close group of cars.  Radar cannot "lock on" very accurately, which again makes the idea that a small metal plate has any effect on it's efficiency ridiculous.
LIDAR operates in a similar manner but has the ability to narrow its sight and target specific vehicles.  Again, not limited by the material its tracking.

I'm all for self driving cars but I also fear a day where I can't drive my own car on the road because it's a safety concern.  I shutter to think that my son won't be able to experience the joys of having his first car and experiencing the freedom and sense of adventure and discovery that you get from having a car.  There's something so romantic about the automobile and the freedom it gives you.  Having computers drive you from A to B will make us more complacent and will only do more to turn people off of cars.  Myself, I enjoy driving but not always for the performance of the vehicle I am driving.  My company car is a 2011 Impala and it makes me physically sick to think about driving that hunk of american genius.  It quite literally does nothing well.  But, what it does provide is sanctuary.  I don't have to answer emails, I don't have to respond to texts, I can't take notes and it's best if I can wait to get to my destination to have an in depth conversation.  I get to "turn off" for that period of time and focus on the task of piloting a 3600lb turd missile that has the potential to cause bodily harm or death if I make a mistake.
What I do like about self driving cars is the safety aspect.  I drive about 30k miles a year for work (not including the miles I put on personally) and the amount of dumb shit I see on the road is stunning.  Without a doubt I can say that there are a large number of people on the road that SHOULD NOT BE DRIVING.  Even beyond the obvious inattentive drivers there's a huge number of people who just don't understand the rules of the rude and create inefficiencies.  Things like cruising in the left lane, not moving over for on-ramp traffic, erratic speed, etc.  If all of this was controlled by a computer then without a doubt we would see fewer accidents, fewer traffic jams and more efficient traffic flow.  My daily drives would be far less stressful and if we are talking about true autonomy then I can sit back, watch a movie, respond to emails, write reports, etc.
Where this application makes the most sense is in transport based business (Sorry Chris).  Trucking, taxi's, bus's, etc.  As a business you are cutting back on wages and benefits, you have quicker delivery times due to no human issues to worry about like sleeping or eating and more consistent wear and tear.  You could manage all of your expenses more precisely.  You could program a truck to hit a certain MPG and consistently know exactly how much a trip is going to cost, when fuel stops will be needed and give exact destination eta's.  You can have bus's and taxi's running 24/7 and always on call.  There are no concerns about a driver with a heavy foot, customer service will always be the same since there is no moody driver, you'll always have the fastest route to your destination and same as trucking, targeted MPG goals.  Staffing cost's would be cut dramatically plus reduced downtime if you don't need a skilled driver behind the wheel.  This is all dependent on full autonomy but even with semi-autonomous vehicles you could achieve a lot of these goals.
The concern I have is in the vehicles ability to make decisions in a life or death situation with another vehicle or pedestrian.  This debate is a hot topic in the industry already and makes a valid point.  Who get's to decide who has the better chance of surviving?  Do the OEM's get to say if their car decides to kill the passenger in order to save a pedestrian in a walkway?  Is that a government decision?  Imagine the marketing campaigns if it's an OEM decision!  As a pedestrian you have to be scared shitless if you know that self driving cars will always choose the safety of it's occupants.  On the other hand, you'd probably see more people obeying cross walks...

I second that...  I've got 5 or 6 track days under my belt on a mostly stock S54 and I have to do way more driver mod to get to that point.  I'd be very interested in seeing how that LS swap works with that transmission.  Either way that car will be an absolute beast!  Looking forward to more posts.

The NHTSA just finished up a 4 year recall investigation into rusting brake lines on GM vehicles that is relevant to this.  Conclusion is, wash your car more and this doesn't happen.

Replacing the fuel line won't be too bad but can be slightly tedious.  I'd recommend replacing the whole thing instead of cutting and patching a spot.  You'll be better off in the long run this way.

This is what sold me on BMW.
An old boss of mine was into M cars and tracking, he introduced me to his e30 m3 and e36 m3. I think CYoung has it right in that they all handle great, but it's the delivery that differs. E30 felt like a go-kart to me, the e36 was just a bit more solid. I drove Dastuz's e46 m3 when it was stock and it was incredibly balanced - once the suspension work was done, the car had 0 roll and was totally predictable. Crazy.

That predictable driving experience is really what does it for me. Even on my 135 which is much softer than an M3, the car is incredibly predictable. Admittedly it was less predictable at the limit before I put the LSD in, but for spirited driving on twisties, even without the LSD it was predictable. I was amazed at how well it was able to cut up Blackhawk on stock suspension, given how technical of a course Blackhawk is.

I will say this - 135 is the latest model I will have for the foreseeable future. While I still believe BMW makes new cars in the M department that handle well, I still don't get the raw connectedness to the road that the older cars give. I am afraid of the age of electric steering and dynamic dampening and computer controlled shit like that. Cool tech but on the track I don't want that. I mean, what's the point of going to the track if the car does everything for you? To me, my 135 is the last hurrah of some semblance of BMW's driving history.

I definitely see myself picking up an e30 at some point.

    Thank you.
Interior is fairly gutted. I have one stock seat, one omp race seat up front. The heater controls are still in as well as the door panels. Carpet, speakers, radio, rear seats are all gone. Last year I had just the rear seats gone along with a borla midpipe and rear muffler section and my dry weight was around 3200.
If anyone has an e46 and wants help with the subframe or bushings send em my way... crazy project, but worth it not to have the trunk rip out when youre driving it like you should be.
Not the fastest car in a straight line, but she sure goes like hell in the twisties. Also that straight six with no mufflers is intoxicating.
