too bad, although I'm not surprised.  when I initially found them on FCP, they were listed as NLA as well.
i wonder if i send napkins through my HP printer it will jam....

here's the design I came up with for holding the glass. these are 'splitter support struts' from fleabay. i had some other ideas like tubing running from the spark plug holes, or threaded rod from the head bolt holes, but this looked best.

    great interview.

on this whole wheel/rim thing - if i walk up to you and say 'nice rims' it means i like the rims but your tires are stupid.

    hey earl, nice rims.

i love the widebody look, and the s38 is god's motor.  too much attention whoring for me to like it, though.

Just read through Earl's build.  compliment accepted! I always want to fix my cars with that level of detail and cleanliness, but then i remember I'll drive it in the snow one time and all that effort will be for nothing.

yeah, of those, 5 and 10.  you have to have a logo which can be used as just a small symbol, not just text.
the company I work for has a 'logo' which is just the name of the company in a font style, and 1)its boring 2)its not very functional or adaptable. you have to think of how it will look 1)on a piece of paper as letterhead, 2)logo on a t-shirt and other swag 3)on a website, apps, digital advertisements, etc.

i see a lot of companies under-estimate how much effort should be put into their first logo design. get it right the first time and save lots of time and money down the line.

also, i'd stay away from anything that hints at the BMW roundel. nothing like spending money on all the design and merchandise to have bmw slap you with a cease and desist.

i wanted to see what a different rear spoiler might look like, so, in fairness, i spent as much time as bmw did on a design. i did this over my lunch break. same size and location of the wing, so that no one can say the function is ruined, and tweaked the design similar to the e46 gtr wing.

i love the asymmetry of the center console. its starting to trend back toward a driver-centric style of earlier bmws.

only 2 pedals makes me sad

GTS is a terrible moniker. over used, regardless of appropriateness.

well the original plan was to create a block out of wood and metal brackets since I didnt keep my block from the parts car. miraculously, i found a b40 block with broken bellhousing mount on ebay that was a local seller.  after negotiating, i was able to do a trade+cash for my old auto transmission.

he was even available the same day so i went and snagged it last night

bonuses: its already been stripped and is super clean. also, it has a bunch of the covers/parts: valley pan, rear coolant cover, front idler sprocket, rear main seal.

i'm fairly sure, but hopefully the b30 heads and the b40 block have aligning holes for the head bolts.

Who doesn't want a piece of a car in their living room? (besides your wife)

Well I do! Been drooling over engine coffee tables everywhere I see them, and I love model building, so it was inevitable for me to do this.
The opportunity presented itself when I bought a blown-engine e34 for the rest of the drivetrain, so I saved a bunch of the parts to make this happen.

I'm sure you've seen plenty of these projects, but usually they just take the block and spray paint it and call it a day.
I'm taking a different route and using the top end of the m60 instead of the block.  It will be the heads, the intake manifold/throttle body, and I'm going to carve a replica portion of the block out of wood to save weight and size.

    Step 1: Disassemble
This is pretty straight forward, and I didn't take any pics.
Only special step is I rented a valve spring compressor from autozone and made a custom tool out of conduit ( 3" long x 1" conduit), as the spring tool does not have the reach to get down in the lifter holes.

Here's a picture of the valve stem seals after the valves have been removed.

    Step 2: Clean
I'm individual washing and scrubbing every part.
The heads were really gross, and cleaning inside them is far too difficult, so I had Kyle chemically wash them at his shop (Thanks Kyle)

    After cleaning

    Step 3: Prep and paint
I'll be cleaning/polishing all gasket surfaces that will be visible, as well as the hydraulic lifters, and some various bits.

Here i've done the polishing on one head and masked them for paint

I'm spraying the heads and various parts with duplicolor silver wheel paint. it has a good metallic finish that looks alot like bare aluminum to me. I've used it on some wheel refinishing with good results.

Paint finished on the head and lifters and valve springs cleaned and reinstalled.

I'll update with more pictures as I go!

took it in Kenosha County. great driving roads out there - not twisty, just straight and empty. for anyone curious, the yellow plants are the soybeans.

last night I did step one of the swap: sprayed everything down with PB blaster days in advance. while i was in there, I hacked off my muffler (which is being changed anyway with all this work).  all I have to say is I know why Chris giggled like a child when he revved the e34 540 for the first time: the exhaust is so mellow and bubbly and sex things. a little to much volume for everyday, but man does it sound nice.

screenshot so we don't lose it as the harassment begins.

    i texted him
    me: is dat real m5?

him: from the story that I know behind it, it should be.

    me: whats the story?

him: i bought the car 2 years ago from my good friend. He got the car from a guy in Idaho. The guy that lived in Idaho got it from one of his good friends that was in Germany and found the wagon in the junkyard without the original s38 so he had it brought over into the US And swapped the s50 and Borg Warner 5 spd trans into the m5 and under the table had someone swap vins with a CA owned 525it with 290k miles on it.  So in 2010 if you look up the carfax for the vin that is currently on the m5, it shows that the mileage was rolled back to 209k and color of the car requested as black. They got rid of all orginial m5 vins left in the car and did a full swap somehow to make it  completely legal to drive yet still illegal cause  of swapped vins.  The title clean for the car as it sits currently and I have had no issue registereing it.  I'm still not positive it is the real deal but he story makes sense and carfax is there to prove it so yes it should be real.

me:so it has no m5 motor, no m5 suspension, no m5 front and rear bumper, no m5 seats, and no m5 vin an somehow its still an m5?

him: I guess so. That's what I've been told and the carfax is the only thing that someone keeps the story alive.  But since I cannot prove it and it sucks but I'm willing to let it go for only 9k if your interested for a slammed aired out e34 wagon.
