Timed Rally

Id like to propose an event:

A timed rally which can be done legally without speeding/breaking any traffic laws, where we meet at a starting point, depart at a set time, split up and arrive at a known destination at an unknown (to all participants) target time. Any car is eligible to win as performance is not the key here. It is simply about feeling lucky, enjoying driving, and doing something out of the ordinary.

A few scenarios I can think of:

Start: Milwaukee airport,  depart @7:00am

End: downtown Waukesha
Target time: No earlier than 7:40am, No later than 8:00am

Special restrictions: Cannot take freeway

at 8:00am hit up breakfast somewhere as a group and announce the winner. Hand out some sort of prize for the winner ( a small entry fee could be collected for a more substantial prize for example or else smaller prizes would be awarded if no entry fee is required)

Another scenario would involve meeting somewhere Northwest of Milwaukee, and Southwest of Appleton so that the Milwaukee crew and Appleton crew could meet up separately, leave at the same time, and arrive at the same destination aiming for the same target time for a bigger meetup.

Ideally a longer rally would happen (milwaukee to madison or beyond) but I think Milwaukee to Waukesha only using side streets would be a fun adventure to start with.

This is something that could take place at any time of the year as well, could be a great winter event even with some of our BMWs tucked away for the winter.

Any thoughts?

Alternate proposal: Pocket Run?

I think either is a good idea tho.

Unless you are talking about a late night run to the gas station for some Hot Pockets then I have no idea what this is.

Thanks for the link Pat.  I do think checkpoints are a good idea, but without transponders or anything Id imagine the only way to mark a checkpoint time (without people monitoring at each checkpoint which isnt realistic) is to have the participant take a picture of the checkpoint with their phone and post it in a rally thread so that there would be a timestamp of when they sent it.

I think 2 or 3 checkpoints would be cool. That would make me feel fine about not restricting use of freeways for the event, the idea behind only allowing side roads is to prevent it from just being a train of cars cruising down the freeway together and defeating the purpose, having checkpoints would make it easier to not restrict freeway use since checkpoints could be spread out

   Thoughts?

Example: You pick five locations on a route (restaurants, bars, shops, etc...). Upon arrival at each location, you receive (1) playing card. After all participants have arrived at the final location,

You see who has the best 5-card poker hand (Winner!)

There a lot more then that to it - but you get the idea.

How about start in Milwaukee and race to Door County. Of we're going to do a road rally, we may as well do it big.

I think the intention here is to set up some kind of driving event that encourages .. er ... more "responsible" driving than is typically seen on cruises, but is still fun for the participants. It's hard to get a group of hooligans together and in their cars without some kind of shenanigans happening. For some people that's part of the fun, but I'm sure for others it's a bit alienating. It only takes one person driving beyond their abilities or a little bit of bad luck to create an ugly situation...

I'm not much of a navigator, but if you need someone to man a checkpoint or hand out playing cards I'd be willing to help.
