  1. Found a climbing spot right in Madison, about 4 miles from the capitol. Unlike the gym, there was no one here and no masks required. Very nice.

Mostly just did some traversing since I don't have any ropes or actual climbing gear. I might have to do something about that so I can give this crack a try.

  2. Tossed the battery back in this. Fired up and idled like I'd just driven it yesterday, even though it's been sitting in underground parking since October. Then, as one does, I decided to take it out for a beat run around the neighborhood on old gas and expired plates.

Someday I will learn to act right and behave like an adult. Today was not that day.

Other than that, no progress. Maybe bumping this thread will help get me motivated to do something with this. Unfortunately, there are other things higher on my priority list at the moment. Notably, fixing the compact and possibly moving, but in the meantime my work-life is about to become an unholy shitstorm as our 6-person engineering team has a half-million dollar project that the customer thinks should be done in two months. Goddam first-world problems.

  3. I built a shed once. Similar to the one pictured, but only 8x12 or so. I was fortunate to get a big stack of used 4x4 foot sheets of plywood and a few bundles of shingles for free, so I probably only spent about $400 on it. It is a fair bit of work though. Super useful for storing motorcycles, car parts, etc. Ended up selling it on Craigslist a couple years later and got suckered into helping move it. Good times.

I painted mine red, because it rhymes with shed. Bavarian flag checkers would be fun though. Like one of those little out-buildings at smaller airports.

Increasing compression is only good for about 3% power gain over stock compression

Not sure whether this is some kind of extreme generalization, or a valid piece of data from a non-relevant discussion...

Ideal static compression ratio is heavily dependent on camshaft timing. Cam specs greatly affect VE across the rev range. When VE is decreased, there's less air getting in, but the final volume after compression is the same, so your "dynamic" CR will be lower. You need a higher static CR to get the the same amount of "dynamic" compression of the charge before ignition. Generally speaking, bigger cams require more compression, especially to restore torque that is lost in the low end/midrange which was lost because increased valve overlap results in a lower VE in those rev ranges..

  5. This is great. Do all squares need to be completed with the same car? I feel like I could fill in half of the board just with the maintenance I've been putting off...

Realistically though, the board layout looks pretty tough. I could see this stretching out for a while before anyone completes it...

  6. Real climbers are goddam freaks.

(pictured above) John Gill was one of the fore-runners of modern climbing (bouldering especially) . Devil's Lake is  home to one of (allegedly/possibly the only?) routes that he ever "chipped" aka modified to make more climbable. Little Flatiron. Rated at V4 it's an lower-intermediate climb, but a lofty goal for a noob, and conveniently an hours drive from my spot. Who knew there was historically significant rock climbing areas in Wisconsin? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Look for AthleanX on YouTube, I’m still trying to recover from tendon damage on my shoulders from two years ago because I was too relaxed whenever I went all the way down on each rep. I was a pull-up machine, 18-24 rep sets (185lbs).

Thank you for the cautionary tale. I don't intend to go too deep down the strength-training rabbit hole. Ultimately though, every year I look at myself and see that I am a little bit fatter than I have ever been. I don't want this one-way trend to continue indefinitely. As I've gotten older the work that I do becomes less active and more sedentary. It's clear that I need to find some other way of being physically active. I do some biking when the weather (and my motivation level) allows, but I'm not much for doing fitness just for fitness' sake. Climbing seems like an activity that I would enjoy, and my hope is that if I build some muscle along the way it will help keep my belly in check. However, I'm a somewhat obsessive person and my attentions span rarely stretches more than a few weeks, so we'll see what happens...

  8. Looks cozy. Under-cabinet lights look nice and should be legitimately functional. It's hard to have too much light over a workbench.

Maybe it's out-of-frame somewhere, but no workshop is complete without a good vice mounted on something solid; for when that stubborn bit needs some polite, but firm persuasion.

Rock climbing always seemed fun and terrifying.   Always seemed that the guys who did well on American Ninja Warrior were good at rock climbing.  Tons of grip and hand strength needed.

I've only done the fake rock stuff, like in the dells or other places with the different shaped hand holds.  The absolute worst part for me is letting go of the wall at the top and letting the pulley assembly lower you back down.  There is that split second of freefall.   Hate it.

The class I signed up for is "bouldering" which is no ropes and strictly low-altitude. I had a couple of jobs in my 20's that were heavily reliant on grip and hand strength, so I think I'm good there. I've been trying to do some basic excercises at home so that I'm not as complete embarrasment. Push-ups and sit-ups aren't bad, but I literally can't get my chin over the bar to do a pull-up.

I'm curious what the demographics of this class are going to look like. Maybe if I'm the oldest one there I can use that as an excuse...
