Masks have been mandatory at my work since May. I made all the signage and am part of the enforcement.

I now have a family member (Uncle) with the virus. Former smoker, admitted to the ICU but no ventilator yet. Things are hopeful for now

Good to hear your employer was more pro-active than mine and that your uncle is doing okay so far.

Thankfully, it does seem like we're learning better ways to treat people and deaths have gone down, but unfortunately there are still a lot of "known unknowns" and "unknown unknowns" when it comes to long-term recovery. Even asymptomatic people apparently have measurable impairment after getting it. Seems better to avoid it if at all possible.

  2. Day 1 of Dane county mask mandate. I started wearing a mask to work 2 weeks ago, but have been taking it of when I'm in my cube. Keeping it on now. We've got a couple chin-maskers and nose-out people, and at least one person that's abstaining completely, but for the most part people where I work seems to have gotten on board, at least for now. Hopefully, we can tamp this thing down...

I'm excellent at drinking on a course.  I have a friend who's a golf pro in California and he's described my swing as "I don't know why that works".  So, you could say I'm kind of an enigma in the golf world.

My drinking is better than par regardless of the location. Haven't swung a club since maybe 2005, but I ain't afraid of looking dumb....

    yeah, definitely only nostalgia. 🤣

i'll give it "run amazingly", though.

Maybe nostalgia isn't the best word. There's an irony of driving a car that was once desirable and prestigious, but now is one of the cheapest and least desirable BMWs available. The fact that this particular example is a bit rough around the edges just makes it better for me. I enjoy being the last owner of a car because it means I can do whatever I want to it with gleeful disregard for resale value. I've always driven POS cars and don't feel comfortable driving something that is too new or too nice. For me the worry about wear and damage stresses me out more than any benefit I get from having a "nice" car. This car is rusty enough that I wouldn't feel right about selling it as-is let alone in the condition that it's likely to be in by the time I get rid of it. The engine is quiet and running flawlessly and the trans seems solid, so I'm sure those parts will find a new life somewhere once I'm done with them.

Which of the many engine offerings does this specimen have?

M50 power. Slower than I remember. RPMs also seem to take an eternity to drop when shifting compared to the m42 with lightweight flywheel. Adds to the executiveness.

  6. Procured a POS people-mover:

Couldn't decide what to do with the compact or what to replace it with, so I decided to buy another car to "fill the gap" between it and my next car so I don't have to drive the e21 everywhere... I can totally see myself dailying this POS for a couple years because I love it. I had a ton of anxiety about buying it because I was worried about all of the things that could go wrong, but as soon as i drove it, it made me laugh and it puts a smile on my face every time I get in it. I had forgotten how good it feels to drive one of these cars.

It's rusty, has a bad exhaust leak, the shifter has 3-4 inches of slop, drivers-side rear wheel bearing is bad, clutch engagement is weird (master cylinder?), brakes have some feels (not the good kind), along with innumerable cosmetic issues, but there's something about a dilapidated old e34 that just puts me in a good mood. Maybe it's nostalgia, but it's also impressive how something that's so old an improperly maintained can still run and drive as amazingly as an old e34. Maybe one of the last truly over-engineered BMWs?

  7. As I'm sure you're aware, getting fast and consistent 60-foot times will be imperative if you intend to get into the 9s. Just like in road racing, if you're not fast out of the corner, you're losing time the whole way down the straightaway. The car seems to hook up pretty well off the line, but there's no way you can make the most out of the available traction just with your left foot. The difference between a good launch and a bad one will be down to millimeters and 1/10ths of a second. I'm not recommending this solution per-se, but it is one way to take the variables out of your launch:

Yes, it's a screen-door closer connected to the clutch pedal. Obviously not the most elegant or highly engineered solution, but it allows you to just slip your foot off the clutch and the car launches itself. Crude for sure, but by adjusting the pivot point, you can get the right amount of clutch slip to keep the engine at the right power output for the traction that's available and it takes the human error out of the equation and allows you to dial in the launch. I'm sure there's a better solution out there, but the point is if you can't nail the launch, then the rest of your run is worthless, and unless you're some kind of 7th level Shaolin clutch guru, you're never gonna get a consistent launch just relying on your left leg.

  8. I biked downtown Madison today to check out the damage and see if people were still out protesting. There was still a good sized crowd hanging out in the state street corner of the square, maybe 60 to 80 people, and a lot of people like myself just out taking the tour. Every business on state street was boarded up and almost all of the wood now has graffiti or murals painted on it. Unlike what you might see online, 100% of the messages were behind the BLM movement. Probably not surprising, considering it's Madison, but I was surprise how much I was affected by it.

On my way back up state street, there was a young black guy, maybe 18 or 20 laying face-down with his hands behind is back in middle of the East Johnson intersection. Police were already there and were totally chill, just making sure he didn't get run over, but it's really hard to know what to do or how to feel when you're in a situation like that. He was obviously trying to force some kind of confrontation. I was going to just ride away, but I ended up turning around and coming back. By then there were a bunch of people in the street holding signs and taking pictures. There was a lot of that kind of thing happening, just people getting shots to post on social media like "look at me, I'm not racist". I ended up leaving again, but on my 2nd trip back through everything was back to normal like nothing even happened.

Anyway, that's just my experience, but I would recommend going there and checking it out, regardless of where "there" is. It's amazing how de-sensitized to things you can become just seeing them on a screen versus actually being there.

This may seem dumb but I finally found a usb charger that doesn’t look like a giant tumor with 6 bright LEDs sticking 8” off the console.

I bought the exact same one a couple years ago for the same reasons. Still charges things. Since it only has one job, that's a win in my book.

  10. Long shot obviously, but there's probably some hoarders out there... Need longer legs for the turbo to do what it does.

As usual, the information I've found online is incomplete and primarily hearsay, but it appears that this ratio was available on automatic e21s and the e30 m20 320i, neither of which probably ever came with an LSD...? Aardvark has some gear sets in stock. I might buy one for research purposes since they're only $90, but I'm concerned that the flange location/thickness on the carrier may be different to accommodate the larger pinion gear, which is why I'd prefer to purchase a complete diff if such a thing exists.

Apparently there was also a 3.36 ratio that was used in the 2002 turbo. Metric Mechanic also lists a 3.25, but I haven't found any application that used it, so I'm assuming those are both unobtanium, or at least more than I care to spend...

40ish on a cold diff. I noticed throughout each run it would slip more and more. Based on what I could find on metric mechanic for a 2 clutch diff w/45° ramp angle in good shape It should be around 58ftlbs.

    Doesn’t spec e30 cap it around 65ftlbs?

    Science!

I wonder why the MM units have a lower breakaway torque though?

I've had this happen a couple times, but I just figured it was just a compromise with F/R handling bias. You could get more weight on the inside rear by removing the rear sway bar, but yeah, no thanks.

I bought my first mountain bike tonight and the first bike I've owned in over 10 years that wasn't a BMX bike.  It was at the local bike shop and I looked at it Saturday, liked it but ultimately left. I stopped by today and the owner says "oh I was gonna call you.  That's one of the employees bikes so I could save you some money of you pay cash.  $160.". I said done let me go get my truck.

It's a 2001 GT Aggressor.  Pretty basic but in like new condition and good enough for my needs right now.

    Looks like a good deal.

I ride a similar vintage mountain bike. I've had it since 2000 and have replaced 70-80% of the parts on it since then, so now it's basically custom built just the way I want it. It's built like a tank (30-pound hardtail). It's mostly an urban commuter now, but it's nice to know I can jump some curbs/ride down stairs/whatever and it's not gonna flinch. Plus, I don't look like some spandex-clad fitness freak on a road bike.
