After taking the back off of the control unit it is all starting to make sense.

The three vertical blue boxes on the left are inputs for the three axis. Now all I need is to buy an old desktop with a parallel port and start experimenting with some free software out there before I commit to buy one. Everyone online says an old $25 machine is all they need so I will be searching Craigslist to find something to fit the bill. I am thinking about buying a nice metal stand for this and building in the computer and screen so it all one clean unit.

And I almost forgot the best part. Since this was part of an estate sale I got a pretty smoking deal on it since I bought it as is. The guy I bought it off of didnt know all of what went with and I didn't either. He threw in a couple chips/boards that I found out had nothing to do with the CNC and they sell for more on Ebay than I bought this whole thing for. SCORE.

Wow, thank you so much. I will definitely be in touch once I get the parts list together.
I don't do it for a living, but I've been lucky enough to work with machine shops, stampers, CNC, laser houses, etc for the past few years and love being around it.

Once I get it running I'll happily make cheap parts for board members. I have a good metals hookup that I'll be able to get a lot of steel/aluminum from.

AC is not a priority. ABS and PS are staying.

It is amazing how much time you can save having the right tools. This was less than 2 hours of cutting. Front end is totally off, B pillars, roof all the way to the rear window, windshield, etc. I wanted to get the 540 out so I had plenty of room for the rest of the fabrication. Planning on taking everything to the scrap yard Saturday morning and then I get really get going on hard stuff.

I also decided to make the rad support removable so I can install/remove the engine and trans together instead of having to drop in the motor then add the trans from the bottom. I did it once and it was a pain in the ass.

My old timeline was wait until spring then start the build again, but I've actually been making good progress in the cold. New goal is to have everything buttoned up by spring and get it on the road as soon as the salt is gone.
I've been spending too much time parting the E39, but once its gone I will be able to work on the E30 much more efficiently with the extra room.

    Bump to this old thread.
Any tips on removing the clutch fan or does anyone local to Milwaukee have the tool I can borrow?

    Weekend Update:

Subframe spacers added to the E30 for proper alignment. (shiny things on the bottom right and left)

    image

Motor and trans pulled from the E39. I spent a ton of time removing and labeling wires so I can properly reassemble without headache.

    And separated.

    I still need to:
Pull the E30 driveshaft and get the front end of the E39 one welded on.
Pull the rest of the harness out of the E39 and remove the unnecessary wires.
    Clean the motor
    Clean the E30 bay
Put the new motor mounts on
    Weld the trans mount
    Mount the brake booster
Wire, wire, wire, wire and wire some more.
