I have taken quite a liking to recaro srd seats but its been a struggle to find a pair reasonably priced and in the area that don't get sold within a couple days.

The only other good option was the dunlop direzza ZIII which I haven't tried yet but they were gonna be around $50 more for a set of 4 and the toyo's had all the same ratings and was considered the better performing tire in rainy conditions which I can vouch for from the hand full of times during wet auto-x's when I didn't think I'd have any grip and they proved me wrong.

Recaro SRD's are likely one of my favorite seats, so I can certainly stand behind you looking for those.
I'll do some browsing but I do believe there is a similar style that is available currently from a reputable manufacturer.j

I ran the Direzza ZII for a bit, I have not run the Toyo so I can't provide a direct comparison, but I can certainly agree that the ZII's get a bit spicy in the rain! I enjoyed it for all other reasons, but as noted never ran the Toyo's. I do believe one of the next "Auto X killer" tires is being released in a 225/45/16 @KaiserRolls may know more about that. I can't remember what tire it was, but Brooke had posted about them and  I recall that size being available.

If Shop Life 2.0 was still active, I would be building one of these at the shop this summer

The thought of someone coming to the shop and seeing a spinning pile of cooking meat, that is an image that I find amusing.

The taco looks great! I had not heard of Arabian tacos until now. I may have to give that a whirl!

XJ's are great rigs! Does it have the 4.0L?

    4.0 with a 5 spd

    Burgundrot jeep it is!

Played with the clutch stuff for a bit to see what I could find. I ordered a new master cylinder to see if the seal in that is weak.
I hope it's not the slave cylinder, as they use a "Tilton" style slave.

Getting access to that means pulling the trans and transfer case, which doesn't sound like too much fun!

They also use a plastic clutch hydraulic line that seals to the master with an o-ring, and is held in place with a roll pin through it. A genuinely wild setup.

  4. Well she's no daily driver, but I still wanted to document this for later! My roommate has been building an XJ for a bit, and we've been meeting people that have land and off road trails on them, not to mention the places 30 min from the house that are stellar for wheeling. I quickly learned the truck doesn't fit on jeep trails, so there was only one solution!
    The $300 93ish XJ
I don't ever name vehicles, but for some reason Ruby sticks with me, as this will be the red(headed) stepchild that always gets beat.

It spent the last year of its life sitting in a barn at a friends house under the presumption of a bad clutch, and he had no desire to work on it (got it in a trade)
He was looking to clear out space so it went real cheap.
When I showed up there was a search for keys, and the conclusion that he didn't know where they ended up. I have never drilled a lock cylinder so I wasn't going to do that, but you can get a cylinder and key for the xj for $20 bucks which made it tempting. Mobile locksmith wanted $140 for 2 keys, but then stopped responding to me. Ended up bringing the keys to my roommates XJ and lo and behold the key for his door locks worked in my ignition perfectly. Convenient.
This will be the third vehicle I have purchased knowing mice lived in it, and it makes me question myself sometimes. Oh well.

Got it on the trailer using the hill to roll it as there was no battery.
    image.png

Got it trailered home (obligatory on trailer pic)
The next day I got to cleaning it up a bit. The roof was amusing to clean with the pressure washer, as it had many much algae on it.

    image.png

Got the mouse nest out of the glove box, pulled the airbox apart and found a nice possum nest with a dead possum in it so got that out of there. Put a battery in it and it fired up without much drama. Didn't want to idle at first without throttle, but that eventually cleared up, probably needs the ICV cleaned.
The clutch does function, but seems to sort of "bleed by" slowly. If you are in gear with no brakes applied and have the clutch pedal pressed it will slowly lose hydraulic pressure and engage the clutch.

After cleaning it in the little hidey hole I have it (I alone have 3 cars and a truck at a house that is setup for 4 cars, much less my roommates 2 cars lol) it looked alright, especially considering what it'll be used for.

Turns out to have a handful of aftermarket parts in it, the front steering components have all been replaced with stronger pieces, the rear lift was done properly, slip yoke eliminator in the rear, adjustable upper control arms in the front, good tires, factory skid plates that are actually staggeringly thick, and a few other odds and ends.
It should prove to be quite fun!

  5. Well it's the end of this story.
A guy messaged me a few times on facebook, said when he would be there, 3 russian dudes rolled up (none of them were the guy I was talking to) and the guys looked it over, chatted with the other guy on the phone (in South Carolina at the time) and got my agreed upon price and they left.
From what I gather a couple of the guys recently started up a diesel BMW shop about 2 hours south of me, so this was an interesting car for them.

It was amusing when I started it up because they all grabbed their phones and started chuckling and taking videos, and thoroughly enjoyed the drive we went on.

I was slightly sad to see it go, but it really has been a pain lately and wasn't seeing the use it deserved, so it's better it went elsewhere.
    Onward!

Still, I love talking about it all and getting peoples opinions, some very smart people I know have wildly different views on things.  I always keep in mind, that I could be wrong, and that just because we differ in opinion, doesn't mean I have to hate them.  I can't discuss things with people that go off the deep end though.  I can't discuss any of this with said Aunt, because she 'knows' she is right, and there is no discussion.

This reminds me of why I enjoyed working with the group of engineers I did when I worked out of our office.
We could sit and calmly discuss / debate things that we had completely opposing opinions on. No one stormed out, no one refused to talk to someone because of their opinion (well, shy of one guy) it was just good clean discussion.
It seems like that is becoming less common, and the polarizing of sides isn't helping us out at all.

  7. The aforementioned influx of social media and people just sharing anything because the title says what they agree with has really blown me away. I really enjoyed the large amount of people sharing the "Covid only has a death rate of 3%, don't let the big media fool you." A quick look at the Hopkins site (best source for numbers as far as I can tell) shows that Italy and Spain are up in the 9 to 12% death range. Sure, the US was at a 3% mortality rate at that moment, but we were so early into the spread of it.
I (to many people's annoyance) have a habit of asking further details and play devils advocate to things that are said that don't line up with what I would consider to be logical. It either leads to frustration from the other person, or leading to believe that the source is logical.
My roommate lately has been on a "the death numbers are faked or they're classifying all deaths as Covid" or other statements of suspended disbelief. When prompted with further questions it's always an "I think" answer. While having an opinion isn't wrong, it feels ignorant to be making large scale claims as someone that is in an entirely unrelated field.
It does also prompt the question of "Who do you believe?" in this whole thing. What is an unbiased source? Do they truly exist? All of the mainstream media channels will have a skew/bias, be it major or minor. Social media has both helped and hurt in that regard in my opinion, as you at least have the ability to "peer review" other people's sources.

Who's to say this Dr.  Fauci guy isn't being paid to say certain things? I'd like to assume he isn't, as he has stood as the director of National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease since 1984.
    Clearly I have a hard time trusting things I don't / can't verify!

For some reason my brain thinks this one should smell like a public pool.

I questioned if it was a public pool of some form upon initial inspection!

Photo looks great, those wheels are styled well for the car for sure.

If anyone knows the PN for the sill plate clips please let me know.

I believe I have a bag of (50) of them, but that may have been E36 clips. Another thing I can check on.

    Interior is looking clean!

Anybody know if you can buy the e30 shift boot frame on its own? Everything I find online shows the frame being a part of the shift boot already.

I have a spare or two hanging around
