i love my t5 v50 (same p1 platform). its pretty fast for a non-sporty car. with 500lbs less (c30) it'd be a hoot. add a $700 tune for 50hp and youd be in fun land.

My wife had one for a while. I really liked it. It was a blast for what it is and with the seats folded down in the back it was very spacious.

The only drawbacks I felt it had was it was pretty bad in the snow even with snow tires and the doors are like a mile long. My wife and I are 5.5’ and if we sat in the car and the door was all the way open we’d have a hard time reaching the handle to close it  lol

Also, at least IMO, the interiors haven’t aged that great. The center consoles are a neat concept, but if you get a base model, they’re very plasticy

  2. Hey guys. So I’m going to keep the stock brakes but get a better pad. What’s your preferences? I’ve read a lot of back and forth between Stoptech and Hawk HPS but I always like to hear some first hand experience from people who have used various pads or something they’ve had good luck with.

I’ve always used cheaper factory equivalent pads on my cars so I don’t have any experiences with performance pads. I’ve pushed this e30 harder than I have my other cars and have had a couple oh shit moments coming up to a turn.

Good to know. Will do. Did the complete replacement get it working correctly again, or did you have issues?

It worked straightaway. Keep track of the gears as you take them apart - or take a picture before you disassemble. When I replaced my gears I also reset my odometer back to zero to reflect my rebuilt engine since the actual mileage of the car was completely unknown.

I have IE3 springs and Bilstein sport dampers and overall I like how they handle and ride. Compared to the vogtlands I had before that were way too soft for the bilsteins, the stiffer spring rates have eliminated hitting the front bump stops like I was before (though that was with drop hats) and arguably ride a lot better because of it. What I don't like is how the car sits. The back is right where I'd like it to be but the front feels like its a full inch too high. Its particularly worse on my car because I run fixed camber plates that add about 1/4" of height.

I'd have to compare the HR Race vs IE springs. They seems to have the same rates according to that table, but maybe their heights are a little different.

That would be a good combo.

Unless something has changes recently I prefer the ride height of the H&R race. The IE appeared to sit a bit taller in front. Even at that I was running E90 spring hats up front to lower it another 10mm, but that was an attempt to even out the proportions on a late model with the lower rear wheel arches. While aesthetics were secondary to driving enjoyment, the way the IE looked on a late model bothered me.

That spring rate with a Bilstein sport damper is slightly overdamped so I think the Konis are a great pick.
Top it off with a set of sway bars it will make the stock suspension feel like you were once driving a bobblehead doll

I'll have to look into how the IE springs sit more. While aesthetics are secondary, that would bother me to the point that I'd need to change them. I haven't had Konis in any of my cars yet, but I have had Bilsteins and they've always seemed kind of "crashy" to me.

The car has, what I believe are Bilstien HDs with IE springs. But the springs appear to be really old and the HDs are quite blown. The car failed the bumper bounce test when I got home from the Rally.

It currently has a front ebay sway bar. What's your thought on sways in front and back or just the front?

Spill free coolant funnel. It has a little plunger so you can pour the excess coolant back into the jug, also allows for bleeding as well.

I didn't even know those existed. My whole life...I've just been pouring it in like a moron.

  7. Since suspension is on the punch list for the winter - what are some of you running and how do you like it? I know there are some coilover options, but I will likely not be going that route due to the cost and that they're not a direct swap (and the ones that are a direct swap are even more money).

I'm leaning towards Koni Yellows with Ireland Engineering springs. Something semi-comfortable enough to DD, but can take some punishment.

get that BBK installed so you never miss a good 4-way stop at an intersection

edit - everything I do is sarcastic, don’t take me seriously on here

I'm more concerned about the bikers and walkers after I turn the Ozaukee interurban trail into my personal rally course.

edit - I'm friends with Kaiser

That'd also help keep my donut holes from rolling out of my lap and onto the floor.

This was going to be my question, what did you guys think of the rally? Worth doing it? Where did the rally route run?

It was 100% worth it. And same as Tom, the best automotive event I've attended. I tend to find most car meets/shows unappealing as I generally don't like the crowds there - I always feel like most people are there to recruit instagram followers. But because of the nature of this event, people were there because they wanted to drive their car. To me, everyone there was great. All the Porsche guys we were following were excited to have us follow along and they loved the e30. Also, the noises made by following a group of air cooled 911s was nothing to complain about. And if we got lost, all we had to do was follow smell of exhaust and burning oil.

This is the map of Day 1. Day 2 was a little more relaxed, but the same general concept from La Crosse to Prairie Du Chien.

Sounds like a great drive! When do you plan to put the car away for the year?

I’ll drive it some more until I have a window to put it in my garage. It’s currently blocked with building material that’s supposed to get picked up soon.

But it ran strong and I think reaffirmed keeping the M20. Now I plan to redo the suspension, exhaust, and BBK.

  11. Did the Overcrest Rally with @The Full Banana over the weekend. Tom did most of the driving since I was technically the passenger and we were supposed to be in his 240. But we both had a blast and the e30 exceeded my expectations and was able to keep up with the 911s in the group we drove with most of the time. Got a lot of compliments on how quick we were on the roads.

After about 400ish miles that made up the rally, the car came home with a significant number of rock chips, a season’s worth of tire removed, and very tired suspension. But it was all totally worth it.

  12. Anyone have a set of front pads laying around? I’ve had a pretty good rattle from the front that I’ve narrowed down to the brakes (is completely gone with the brake pedal slightly pressed).

Anyways, just want something to get me through the last couple months.

Heh, drunk ramblings. I could probably explain it, but I'd have to write a book to do it. Nothing about car culture makes sense rationally or economically. The fact that people do it anyway leaves a lot of space for someone to step in and ask "why" and what is the significance and meaning of all of it.

On the surface, the desire to have a nice level workbench seems like a virtuous pursuit, and probably is. It shows a commitment to perfection, or at least attention to detail. However, you illustrated the downside yourself:

I realize you were exaggerating, but for me it illustrates the flip side of pursuit of perfection and attention to detail.

    That makes complete sense.

I feel the majority of car culture - and this can probably translate into most hobbies - is a dick measuring contest. There is a constant pursuit to be the best and then photo dump the internet so everyone else can tell you how awesome you are. I think this is the reason that I don't do a lot of mainstream auto events. I personally enjoy cars - but I don't enjoy car people (large generalization). I try to not be that person, and I fail at times. Everyone does.

Call me objective, but I'm betting that the time and effort you've put into thinking about how to level your workbench has already exceeded the time and effort you would lose by having an un-level workbench.

It wouldn’t be an issue whatsoever except that I’m planning on putting cabinets above the work bench. And there is conduit running around the garage for the wall outlets. So there would be two level things above a clearly unlevel thing.

Also - I have until next June before we’re even back in our house for me to use the garage. Until then, I’m reworking the inside and have ample time to do these little things.

Garage Journal is a great site for inspiration. I've seen lots of work bench builds with harbor freight tool boxes underneath.

    https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/

I’ll take a look there. I have to be careful because I get too deep in things like that and it makes me rethink all my life choices and convince myself I need to tear down my garage and start over.

I'd definitely find a way to incorporate elevator bolts if you want to build something nice out of metal, that way you can dial it in perfectly and if you ever need/want to move it you an re-adjust. The garage journal website gets me excited to build up my garage over the winter.

    image.jpeg

I found this example that I like.

  16. As I'm redoing my garage, I picked up two Husky 46" tool chests. These next to each other will become my work bench. Naturally, the floor slopes from the back to the front of the garage and the wall that these will be going against will have some of that slope. I have see some solutions where people install adjustable legs instead of the casters. But the casters add about 6" of height and there's probably a 2" height difference from one end of the ultimately 92" work bench to the other end. I'm not confident I'll be able to find adjustable casters that will give me that much height or adjustment.

I think something like this would work best. Some square tubing that the boxes can sit on, and then legs either cut to fit my floor or close enough that I can than put adjustable legs on this. Looking for any advice or if others have their own solutions? I know I could just use some wood blocks and whatnot, but I would like this to be functional and look good at the same time. I'm putting a lot of effort into the garage for its remake and don't want to half ass this.
