  1. I work in the Planning and Zoning Department in Menomonee Falls, I know all too well how that goes. In Menomonee Falls we don't limit how many Accessory Structures (sheds, detached garages, etc.) you can have, but limit the total square footage of all accessory structure to 60% of the finished living space of the home on the property. Which in most cases isn't an issue, but we have a lot of ranches here and that can really limit people what they want to do.

And in Cedarburg it's not restricted to a number, but a lot coverage ratio. In my Zoning District we can have 30% lot coverage - including house and accessory buildings. We have roughly a 13,500sf lot so we can have 4,000 sf of coverage.

I like how Cedarburg does it better, because if you have a bigger yard, you should be able to have bigger/more buildings on it if you want. I disagree with how Menomonee Falls does it, because what you have a 10 acre yard, but only need a 900sf home because why not? Now your limited to a tiny garage.

That sucks though. I've had to tell a lot of people that they can't do what they want to do because they're house isn't big enough. I don't think it's fair.

Yesterday I dug a hole and put wood in it.

    I'm jealous.

I ended up getting an 8x10 resin shed from Menards. But I was able to put it together in a few hours while our girls played outside. I left an opening next to it where another shed can fit, and my plan is to keep this one for a year or two while we wrap up all the other projects, build a nicer shed, and then sell the resin one with the base.

It's at least a good temporary solution to put all of their toys/bikes in and is surprisingly much sturdier than I thought it was going to be.

**Note that the base blocks and pieces of wood are temporary to level it out. They will be replaced with a more permanent temporary solution**

I ordered it pre-built from Proven Power and it's built and delivered by Premier Portable Buildings.  It was $4k with tax and delivered which was about the same as the pre cut kits I was looking at.  I'll build the crushed gravel base which should cost about $500 or less.  They're fully customizable but I went fairly basic.  This will be garden and pool stuff along with whatever else doesn't need to be in my second garage.

I'm excited to get my own space back and get the chance to make it more of my ideal garage space.

Nice. I was planning on building one here soon, but we have so many projects to do on the house yet, that I'm leaning towards doing the same thing.

In today's episode of WIbuildings... I ordered a shed yesterday!  10x14 lofted barn with 2 4' lofts and about 10' 6" from the floor to ceiling center.  It should be delivered in 3-5 weeks.  I'm going to drop it on a crushed stone base in a 4x4 pressure treated perimeter.  I'm excited to reclaim my back garage and make that more of a useable space instead of storage!

    image.png

We have one on the back of the garage and will do a second one this summer. One for yard stuff and one for kid stuff. So my shed (garage) can be just Dad stuff.

Did you order it as a kit that you will need to assemble or is it one where they deliver and assemble it for you?

Lol. Chris was working on his motorcycle this past weekend. Out of nowhere he stopped, walked over to the engine bay and started cleaning it. I wasn't going to stop working on the intake and cv axle to stop him. 🤷‍♂️

lol. @The Full Banana is the same way. Put a cleaning product and towel in his line of sight and he can't resist the urge to start cleaning engine bays.

Lumber prices have gotten absolutely ridiculous! The 2x8's pictured there were the cheapest I could find and it was still over $100 just for those. The pressure treated stuff is even worse. I've gotten good at recycling what I tear out from elsewhere in the house haha

I grabbed 6 2x4x8's yesterday and they were $40. wtf.

    17 hours ago, P_Roloff said:

Yeah, my dad is in residential construction and he said the other night prices have gone up around 70% for framing lumber for him compared to pre-pandemic cost. It's obviously factored into bids now, but the price increase when he had houses in progress sure sucked.

That's exactly what happened to us. We signed our contract before the prices went up and we ended up using our total framing/exterior budget on basically the rough framing. We still had to buy all the siding and all the carport material. It was awful and sent us quite a ways over budget very quickly.

It's 8 2x8x8' boards, they stopped right at the back of the front seats. I just noticed it looks like they went to the dash because I had 5 more 1x2x8' that I didn't need to have hanging out the back haha. I DID however bring home a couple 16 foot baseboards a couple months ago but forgot to take a picture. Those went on the dash and then out the hatch window another 8 feet haha.

Okay. That makes way more sense. lol. I can have 8' boards sit right between the front seats and be completely in the car. And I was thinking there's NO way that my car is that much longer than yours.

On a side note - how much have all of your DIY projects gone up in price with the price of wood being fucked? I started on our basement and have bought somewhere around 50 2x4x10, 20 8'ers, and then a variety of green treated stuff and what I paid now is SO much more than what I priced out 9 months ago.

Thank you. It only took me about two weeks to complete the snail. One of my better pieces.

Those jack stands have been on my wish list since the HF recalls 🙄 That lamp is begging for a pool table under it.

They can still go significantly higher. I really like them so far. Car feels very stable. I don’t care what people say about the quick jacks, I couldn’t get comfortable working under them.

Next on my list is a better jack. Looking at the HF extended ones.

Looks cozy. Under-cabinet lights look nice and should be legitimately functional. It's hard to have too much light over a workbench.

Maybe it's out-of-frame somewhere, but no workshop is complete without a good vice mounted on something solid; for when that stubborn bit needs some polite, but firm persuasion.

Yeah, it’s on the list to get a new vice for the work bench. The other one was falling apart and I tossed it.

I bought some Race Ramps because of you and now I feel the urge to buy some other things..... take my money

Lol. What’s peaked your attention this time? The jack stands? I highly recommend them.

  10. Floors are being finished/refinished this week in the house, so I have been exiled from my projects in there. Which means getting caught up on the e30. Getting a bunch of parts off for @The Full Banana and continuing my projects that I hard started in the garage.

Bench top finished and built a shelf for above it with some lighting.

Made the little TV stand there. Will get a TV for there and mount the speakers in the garage to use for music.

Picked up this nifty power strip on amazon. Neat story. I know.

I also decided I didn't want to do a 2-post lift in the garage because of how much room they take up and I don't really like the quickjack type lifts so I opted for some beefy jack stands that have some good height to them.

wow, would have never expected 9' basement walls. in that case, scoring is pointless and 6' panels would be perfect.

I think it was required. I remember pushing for shorter basement walls to save money, but I think they ended up being this size because of how the engineering came out. Idk.

Almost looks like a basement I could walk through without hitting my head on something

You have no idea. The original part of the house was built in 1900. My wife and I are 5’6” and we could JUST barely walk through the original basement without hitting our heads on the joists. I grew up in old houses, too. This is my first basement where I can walk freely without worrying about hitting my head.

I circled where you can see the old part of the house in the new basement and the blue line is the bottom of the house/basement.

FYI 6' panels wont save you any tape joints, unless your walls happen to be over 8' tall. youll still have one joint somewhere in the middle of every vertical section. if your framing is studs, you cant install them sideways either, as studs don't fall on 6' centers. you might save material cost, i guess. also do you have a trailer big enough for 12' panels?

i have idea that might work in theory but not practice: score an 8' in the middle, carefully fold it in half and carry it down. unfold, glue the seam from the backside and install. if the paper on the not-cut side survives, you could save yourself the joint.

It’s not framed yet. I’ll be doing that and will be framing 24” OC. And it will have 9’ ceilings.

6’ panels would give me fewer joints overall. I only have a 4x8 trailer, but I went on Menards and it was only $84 to deliver the drywall. Worth it IMO over taking the time to load and unload 20 some sheets.

But your idea of scoring it and folding it in half to get it down is worth a try as well.

They’ve since dry walled the stairway, but that’s the basement. New utility room and we had them rough in a full bath too.

i'm done painting for a long time. we've only been in our house for 2 years and my wife is starting to ask about painting rooms AGAIN that we've already painted. my response now is "YOU can paint whatever you want!"

HA! When we moved into our house at the beginning of 2017 we repainted the whole thing. My wife loves white, so we painted half the walls in the house white. About a year in and she's like "there's too much white, I think". We repainted every wall that we had painted white to a color.

Feels like I am moving slowly, but between constant backorders of cabinets/appliances/materials this past year

Welcome to WIBASEMENTS, coming soon to HGTV!

Right in the feels. Luckily we didn't have anything delay in material that slowed the progress of our house, but from contract signing to ordering, materials costs went up about 20%. We went through our framing budget before we even ordered all the siding or material for the carport.

    100% same page.

bright side is getting home projects done that i thought were 10+ years down the line

when this shit is over, open bar at my place!

That looks fantastic. Our new basement will be 180 to that - a dedicated play space for the kids. lol.

That looks fantastic!! Gets me excited to start working on my basement eventually

I forgot you were in the middle of a full home reno, too. How's yours going? I took on several projects to save us some money - laying about 1,400 sf of hardwood floors upstairs, building all the closet shelving, building the fireplace mantel, and building/painting built-ins in the kitchen. THEN, when that's all done I'll be starting on finishing the new portion of the basement. Which I found out when taking down the 4x8 sheets of foam board that they only fit down the stairs because they're flexible. All of the drywall will have to go down in 4x4 sheets. *crying inside*

I feel like towards the end of 2020 the e30 was finally getting to a good point that I could drive it more than I worked on it. Excited for 2021 and the new stuff it's getting - but that is buried under a pile of house projects that I need to finish.

also a warning:  that door is just about the most insecure door you could have.  glass panes near the door handle are a target for thieves. someone can in that door in about 2 seconds. i installed sheet of lexan on the inside of a door like this in the past because it is nearly shatter/impact proof. the deadbolt is also in a very narrow piece of wood since the glass lite is right next to it. it could easily be kicked in without reinforcement.

I'm aware, but I'm not overly worried about it. It was the front door to our house and never had an issue. We've left for the weekend and have accidentally left the french doors wide open on our back porch and doors unlocked without issue. Also have neighbors who watch our house and we'll have cameras.

@The Full Banana was helping me move some furniture that was in the garage into the house a few weeks ago and a neighbor from across the street ran over at 9PM to make sure we weren't burglars.

Perhaps these are some famous last words, but I think it'll be OK.

EDIT: Also, my curtains are going to be Buffalo Check. So far from ugly. lol. They'll fit in with the space when I'm done.

  17. So remember how I made a big stink about the workbenches and how unlevel they would be? Well, turns out they're completely fine. Will definitely leave it like this for a cleaner look. Plywood top has not been installed or trimmed down to fit, so ignore the crookedness.

Almost done painting. Need to mud all the inside corners and then touch them up and then paint the ceiling.

Also threw on the old front door from the house onto the garage. Fit perfect. Have some curtains to hang up so you can't see inside the garage.

  18. Here's a variety of things happening.

The car has been parked since the rally. So far I have Bilstein Sport shocks/struts, HR Race Springs, Supersprint Catback (Black Friday sale from Turner), ST sway bar kit, new rotors and pads, and DSSR. On my list of things to get yet are coolant hoses, better short shift kit, new fuel pump and some other odds and ends. This last round should address all of the major systems that I haven't touched yet and hoping it will give me extended periods of driving with only minimal/routine maintenance.

Our house addition is progressing. The inside is drywalled and I believe they will be starting on 1st floor floors next week. Our contractor is hoping to have the interior done around April. And my conversion of the garage into a shop continues. I put in cabinets to accommodate the fridge that was in the house that will now be in the garage. Painting some walls tonight so I can rotate things from unfished walls to finished walls to continue working.

Winter projects in the garage include:

    • Building a garden shed so the existing garden shed can become a toy shed.
    • Building built-in cabinets and shelves in the house that we took on ourselves to save some money
    • Laying carpet and floating floors myself on the second floor of the house to save money

i will still be car hobbying, just on a limited basis. an engine tune or set of wheels here or there. but one vehicle for me only. i've been driving the volvo a lot even in the summer,  sometimes even choosing it over the e30 for the turbo noises.

So you will be down to just the V50 as far as car hobbying goes?

It's an interesting sentiment to read as I have the option of picking up another "fun" car in the spring if I want to. But I have a constant internal debate if I want to spend the time, energy, and dollars maintaining three cars of my own. I think it helps puts things into perspective hearing it from other car people that you don't need a car hoard to be a car enthusiast and there are more important things in life besides cars.
