I appreciate the kind words Pat! I was expecting 6k, Not in the first 2 days though. So we will see where it goes.

If you think about it. Its harder to find a clean 318ti then a clean m3. The TI was an Economy car when new. This one had a sticker for 29k

If you think about it it's harder to find a clean 93 Corolla than a clean Turbo Supra...

I get more joy from the home projects since it makes two people happy (me and the wife) and more people get to enjoy it (friends and family). plus, hobby time all year means a nice, warm, well lit, indoor shop space

Happy wife, happy life is a myth.  You've already figured it out.  Doing something for other that also brings you joy is far more rewarding.  I will most definitely sit and watch woodworking and cooking shows on PBS when I have the time.  Skilled woodworking is amazing to me!  The way they fly through building hidden joints and chiseling out perfect dovetail joints is just nuts.

  3. I went to change the oil about two weekends ago before putting it away for the winter and upon re-inserting the rear drain plug on the oil pan I found that it wouldn't tighten to the required 18ft/lbs.  Righty tighty became righty losey.  I pulled the plug back out and examined the threads to find some alloy bits left on the bolt and the pan had some semblance of threads left but obviously not what it was supposed to look like.  I'm the only one who's changed the oil since I bought the car and I have always used new plugs, copper o-rings and torqued both plugs at every oil change so I was confused and frustrated.  I hit the google machine and found that it's a fairly common occurrence on the S65 with steel plug/aluminum pan.  I also looked up the cost of the upgraded pan from bimmerworld... about $1100 and I'd get no core because of the damaged pan.  That's still cheaper than a new OE pan for about $1300.  The prospect of spending 8+ hours laying on my back to drop the pan was a scarier thought than buying the pan with a dipstick.

I decided to try a time sert first so $115 later I had it ordered.  After getting it I called up Turner looking for some validation and their service department was pretty helpful.  They said this happens and they've used these to do the repair before with success and consider it a permanent fix.  I bought some red loctite and gave it a shot on Saturday.

For those like me who had no idea what a Time Sert was and why it's better than a helicoil here's my take.  The Time Sert is a full set of steel threads with no gap in between the threads.  This gives it strength and ease of installation with little to no change for it to pull out where as a helicoil is a wire type insert that lacks the strength of the Time Sert.

The Time Sert was far easier to install than I expected but the prospect of possibly ruining my pan further was terrifying.  The kit includes the required drill bit, counter bore, tap, tap guide, driver and inserts.  It did NOT include loctite or any T handle/tap adapter and I found that the drill bit and tap were slightly larger than any drivers I had or could find at a store so I used my drill on it's lowest setting.  Also, by this time my oil had been draining for about a week so there was no oil dripping out at all which made the install cleaner.  Since I was doing this on my back I made a guide for the drill bit by drilling a hole into a 2x4 and holding that against the pan for a guide.  I then counter bored the hole and tapped it for the insert.

    PXL_20201128_192038931.jpg

I put a little red loctite on the insert and used the driver to install the insert.  I followed the directions and kept turning the insert past the point of it getting hard to turn until the insert stopped moving.  I let it set for about 30 minutes then put the plug in and torqued it.  The plug tightened to the proper torque with no fuss so I filled it up with a few quarts of oil and drained that out to try and get any shavings out.  A couple came out but there wasn't much material removed to begin with so I wasn't expecting much.  I reinstalled the drain plug, torqued it and added all of the Liqui-Moly 10w60 and let it sit for a little bit while I stared at the drain plug.  No leaks yet so I started it up and let it run for about 20 minutes while I intently stared at the oil pan.  No leaks!  I took it for a short drive, re-examined and still no leaks.  Took it for another drive, said a small prayer to the BMW gods and ran that tach to 8k RPM.  No explosions!  Did it a few times and brought it back home to inspect and found no leaks at all!

    Were the stock lights halogens?

Brother, pretty disappointed that KC Lights and some naked lady mudflaps aren’t anywhere on your list but I reckon this is America and you have your freedom to mod as you please.

My dad has a new 2.7 and completely loves it. Gets embarrassingly good gas mileage. Embarassing because its the same mileage any of the underpowered 4 cylinder SUVs would normally attain.

They were halogens.  The LED headlights weren't an option on the XLT but were optional on the Lariat and up.  No KC lights or naked lady's as of yet... maybe that's a later stage of the trucker owning process.  Maybe that's when I get to the acceptance portion of ownership.  The 2.7 has been great, really.  It's not slow and gas mileage is better than my M3 so it's got that going for it.  I typically see 20-22 mpg in normal driving but I've averaged up to 24 mpg on a tank.

  5. I can cross two items off of my list.  I bought a 2" Rough Country leveling kit which I had installed by a buddy of mine in Waukesha and I bought a set of Morimoto XB LED headlights from work after getting them brought on as a new vendor.  The leveling kit made a world of difference for the stance of the truck!  I did notice a little bump steer afterwards so I had an alignment done by Jerry's in Waukesha and that cleared that issue right up.

The headlights are fucking wonderful!  I haven't gotten a decent picture at night with them so you'll have to suffer through the one I have.  They look much better than stock AND they're FUNCTIONAL!  Little known fact but the stock headlights on an F-150 are powered by candlesticks made by gnomes.  These are the headlights that should have come on this truck.  From a safety perspective it is absolutely unacceptable the amount of light the stock halogens put out at night.  The Morimoto's were easy to install once you get over the fact that just about every modern truck requires the whole grill to come out to change the lights.  They came with very good written instructions and there's plenty of DIY's online if you can't figure out the written instructions.

I also had the chance to drive in a little bit of snow and can tell you already these Nitto Terra Grappler G2's are far better than the Michelin's that came on this turd.

    Next up:

    • Tonneau cover
    • Rear air springs
    • Stiffer rear shocks
    • Bed step (because I'm getting old)

I like the white, nice choice!  MHD or JB4 I believe are the best options but you can also get tunes from COBB, Dinan and more. Depends on how much you want to spend and if you plan on any mods in the future.

My buddy with an Indian Scout and a whopping 320 miles of riding experience was quick to tell me how Indian smoked HD in the races as well 😄

Based on what I saw in that race I tend to believe the balance of power was very forgiving lol.  The way the 1st place Indian pulled ahead and then PAST after it had an off there was no chance for anyone else.  The Challengers as a whole looked like those teams spent far more effort prepping them for actual racing than the Harley's.  If it becomes a full blown series with actual regulations I'm sure it'll be a horse a piece once Harley gets serious and puts money behind it.

    Yes, it absolutely does.

Now you need only find a purple Katana. Shouldn't be hard to find one for about $400 :)

You'd be surpised!  In decent condition it's not easy!  They've all be stripped and turned into "stunt bikes" or just beaten to all hell in general because someone bought them for $1000, learned to do wheelies and WOT highway pulls then called it a day.
