deek10sn
I have been tossing around the idea of offering my services building roll cages beyond friend and family. My questions to wibimmers is-is there a demand for custom bolt in 4pt or weld in 4/6+ cages?-what is a good price point for said services? My personal cage was built to my best interpretation of NASA/scca safety guidelines. Its just something I love to do! Here are a couple of quick pics during the fab. Please discuss! rampelsauce
Boris3
Good on you, I always like seeing the welding skills of folks that do this. That said personal interpretation of rule sets can be an issue. NASA/SCCA cage regs for racing prep can be challenging to deal with. Safety requirements on bars versus limits on bars that tech sees as more for structural rigidity, main hoop specs and body clearances, halo, rear, and diagonal bar requirements, etc. Has the cage in the pictures been through the logbook tech process either by tech inspectors at track or by a NASA/SCCA certified shop, and were there any concerns raised? Having this experience of success in cars making it through tech and being issued NASA/SCCA logbooks would help build local interest. deek10sn
Boris, it has not been certified for logbook. It my weekend warrior drift/hpde road america car. As the term of "my interpretation of the rules,". I made that statement because it has not been inspected but it was built to their spec. Maybe pursuit of more education on becoming a certified shop is the way to go. Thanks for your input!
deek10sn
Also for anyone reading pic 1 is not how the cage sits, the front sub assembly is dropped through the floor for purpose of welding the cage 100%
AvusHatesCones
I'll probably be buying an autopower 4 point bolt in soon. Unless you can replicate one for less using 1.75 DOM. http://www.ioportracing.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=60902&Category_Code=AP902
deek10sn
It would be tough to compete with the price of an cage that is mass produced. The above pics are 1.75 DOM

CMart
Awesome cage. I don't know too much about the engineering behind different cages, but I will say I love when they are symmetrical like that.

deek10sn
Thanks again, there is something satisfying about making your own car parts or doing your own work on cars! I think most/all on wibimmers.can agree on that feeling! wasnt m3
KaiserRolls
How long does it take you to make a cage like the one you posted?
deek10sn
It would be hard to guess because that was my first, and with being very particular on my work....2 long weekends or so.
DrLeadFoot
I'm tossing around the idea of a mini cage in the rear that ties in the rear shock mounts and the diff mounting points for an e36 cover on my e30. Any interest from you for this job? Could you PM me an estaminet?
deek10sn
Love that idea, haven't seen that idea produced as a stand alone unit. Currently I am just trying to guage interest, if I move forward with this I will definitely let you know!
DrLeadFoot
This is what I'm thinking but with triangling the shock towers in. Pic is of a z3.
Rowleym
Yup I'm doing that for sure. Hopefully I can CNC a bracket so we can reproduce them easily. Of course small fab work no matter what. Adding in the towers would be easy too. DrLeadFoot
