Guest PerryLa79
I have a 4.4l V8 540i should I put twin turbos or a supercharger in it?????
DrLeadFoot
Supercharger would be easier.$$ Turbos could lead to higher total power. $$$$$$$
B C
Most superchargers sound like garbage. I say remote mount turbo patsbimmer1
patsbimmer1
I think you need to know what your budget is first and foremost and what are your power goals. If it was an unlimited budget I would always go turbo just for the general ease to increase boost and make power as well as the overall efficiency of a turbo compared to supercharger. For ease of install and a smaller budget with moderate gains I would do a supercharger. Easy to maintain, low entry price but you can't just turn the boost up to see more gains. Yes you can install different pulleys but every supercharger is going to have limits.
Guest PerryLa79
Yeah I know that turbo is way better and that's what I was thinking

patsbimmer1
Most superchargers sound like garbage. I say remote mount turbo I worked on a GTO with a rear mount turbo set up years ago. Plumbing... Plumbing for days...
Guest PerryLa79
How does it work when it's in back of the car?
B C
It is a good way to go if you want to go turbo and be able to revert the car back to stock easily.-Intercooler not needed-uses stock exhaust manifolds-keeps excess heat out of the engine baySTS makes kits but it wouldn't be difficult to make your own. Their site will give you an idea on what its all about. http://ststurbo.com/

B C
Nope, no remote mount here. I used to live near STS though and tons of people in the area ran them.

Earl
Are there any power gains from a remote mounted turbo? I can't see any advantage besides space savings and cutting down on engine bay temps. I can see the turbo being more laggy due to being that far down the line. B C
It is not as efficient as one mounted closer to the engine with higher pressure + higher velocity exhaust gas, but the advantages I see are not having to buy an exhaust manifold or intercooler (you can say the same thing for a supercharger) and not having to deal with hacking things up in the engine bay to get it to fit. The OE mufflers are quite large so removing that gives a decent amount of space to work with. Its not the best way to turbo, but like i said, If you have some money to burn on a car that you will eventually return to stock and sell, then a remote turbo system would be very easily reversible. Bassboy3313
Its definitely one of the better alternatives I would say.
