    Real climbers are goddam freaks.

(pictured above) John Gill was one of the fore-runners of modern climbing (bouldering especially) . Devil's Lake is  home to one of (allegedly/possibly the only?) routes that he ever "chipped" aka modified to make more climbable. Little Flatiron. Rated at V4 it's an lower-intermediate climb, but a lofty goal for a noob, and conveniently an hours drive from my spot. Who knew there was historically significant rock climbing areas in Wisconsin? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

At what point would you start to worry about getting pulled over for poor visibility due to salt?

Building up to a full pull up is very hard, even for strong people.  You really need to set up some sort of assistance.  Not sure if you are doing this at home or at a gym, but you need to lighten your body, you can do that with a counterweight pull up machine, or a big band around your feet connected to the bar, or you can even find a lower pull up bar where you can put your feet on the ground to get some weight off.  Essentially you want to be able to go through the whole pull-up motion at a lighter weight to strengthen the muscles.  Just like any other weightlifting exercise.  You wouldn't start bench pressing at 300lbns and just do the downward motion.....you'd start at a light weight and do several reps and then increase weight.  Pull-ups need to be progressed the same way.
Another thing with the abs as it applies to the rock climbing is leg lifts or toes to bar.  If you have the pull up bar, hang from it and lift your legs and touch the toes to the bar.  Or, raise your knees as high as you can, etc.  It engages the abs differently than a pull-up and will simulate using your core to raise your feet up to the next hold spot on the boulder.

The class I signed up for is "bouldering" which is no ropes and strictly low-altitude. I had a couple of jobs in my 20's that were heavily reliant on grip and hand strength, so I think I'm good there. I've been trying to do some basic excercises at home so that I'm not as complete embarrasment. Push-ups and sit-ups aren't bad, but I literally can't get my chin over the bar to do a pull-up.
I'm curious what the demographics of this class are going to look like. Maybe if I'm the oldest one there I can use that as an excuse...

Anyone do rock climbing? I signed up for a class in a couple weeks. I'm old, out of shape, and have no core strength. Should be fun.

Hi all. I will eventually be making a new thread for this, but I wanted to pop in and introduce myself as the new owner. Things have escalated very quickly with this car, and this winter, the engine is getting a complete overhaul (with the exception of the bottom end). The car was in excellent condition considering mileage and age, but it had some oil seepage from most gaskets, power steering, and all the other common E36 things. Anyways, so I pulled the motor...
More to come later, and I will consolidate all of this in a more formal post. If you want to follow along immediately, I post regularly to my story on Instagram about what’s going on (search “therealswiper”)

    Cheers,
    Josh

Hi! I'm Colin, just purchased my first BMW - jumped right into the deep end with a Euro '84 520i with an E36 M3 drivetrain and various other M3 and M5 parts.  German Buick Grand National, I guess.  Flying out to the east coast tomorrow to pick it up and then drive it home.  Always been a VW/Porsche guy, now I'm expanding my horizons...a little.  In the Madison area, Middleton specifically.
Dealer photos below, more to come, I'm sure!

Ahhh man an excuse to go beat on the car... I hate those!

Note my overzealous let-off that had me pointing toward another car in oncoming traffic, and the other side being a ditch lol
I hope @B C appreciates the audio, the timing was unintentional.

The highway was actually dry enough to let 3rd gear stretch its legs, I always debate going back to a 3.73 in this car, but the 3.25 feels like it takes great advantage of the torque on hand.

The brochures are nice, but a good set set of picks is super nice to have around too. Definitely a tool that you wouldn't necessarily think to buy, but comes in handy more often than you would guess.

I held off on opening my gift until I delivered mine, but I finally got to open it today. Got a handy Milwaukee pick set, some really sweet (and mint) dealer sales brochures for the e30 and e34, and of course, stroopwafels. Thanks @m42b32!

The suspension starts to take a nose dive around 75k so I'd say at 100k it's definitely in need of a refresh.  The sport suspension is better than the standard but in my opinion it was never night and day different for me.  Noticeable but it doesn't make it an M car.  Driving an S5 right after doesn't do the e91 any favors since these are two different animals.  A 335i m sport or e46 m3 are better comparisons.  The V8 in the S5 is nice and sounds great once it's opened up.  They don't have the same issues as the earlier 4.2 in the b6/b7.  By the B8 chassis the S cars basically became a spicier version of a normal car while the RS cars were direct M competition so consumables aren't that bad as far as price goes.  With that said the S car is probably still going to cost more than an e91.  Also, you're still dealing with a German V8 so you still need to have some healthy fear of financial disaster at any moment.
The e91 is a great daily utilitarian vehicle but the n52 isn't going to add any thrill to your daily commute while the V8 in the S car will definitely add some excitement.  You could make the e91 a great handling great looking car but it'd never compare to the S5 overall.

I was secretly hoping to cause some domestic conflict w/ whether this wood or wood not be allowed to to be hung up, but you having a shop took a little of the fun out of it.
Regardless, it's always fun to use the cnc at work for projects where tolerances don't matter.

The key part is soft maple and the handle is "Peruvian Walnut", where "Peruvian" means imported and "Walnut" means brown; aka imported brown wood.
