Alright. I'm finally making some progress on the e30. While take a couple steps back. While snooping around the engine I noticed quite a bit of oil seeping out around the intake manifold gaskets and I have a fair amount of oil in the throttle body. I've read some is normal, but excessive oil in the intake manifold typically points to a vacuum leak.

I ordered new intake manifold gaskets and oil drain pipe gaskets. But I think if I do have significant oil leaks they are coming from the two barbs for the IAC and brake booster. They are pretty loose. I've read that they are simply pressed into the manifold and can loosen up over time. These are some pretty solid vacuum leaks for how loose they are.

Does anyone have any recommendations for fixing these?

    Thanks!

I used some permatex gasket sealer on the barbs and it seems to be holding up well. I pulled the barbs out then just put a solid amount of sealant on them toward the flange of the barb, pressed them on, and let them set and they seem to be pretty much sealed up and in there solid. Check your charcoal canister hose too to make sure it’s hooked up to the intake manifold, it’s way the hell underneath the manifold and at least on my car did not have a hose clamp, so if it came off or was left disconnected that could be your issue too. When the head was off my e30 last, I forgot to hook that vacuum line back up and couldn't figure out why it idled like hot garbage until I smoke tested it and plumes of smoke came out the bottom there. Good luck with your vac leak search, it’s a never ending task on these it seems.

I live really close to Pewaukee, but I'd drive the wrong way initially if any Milwaukee area people are interested in meeting up for some Qdoba breakfast burritos and then cruising to to the picnic as a group.

I am also in for Qdoba diarr- I mean, burritos, before the picnic if the Madison peeps are okay with leaving a bit earlier. Maybe this time me and Joe won't get lost on the way lol.

    89k, that’s really low!

It is! When it joined our fleet a few years ago, it had 59k and had been owned by the same family for most of its life. Maintenance history was great, but the aesthetics of the car left (and still leave) a bit to be desired. The nose has been resprayed at some point and it was done poorly and there's chips and scratches all over it, but the bones seem to be pretty solid. Unfortunately, it only took 3 winters to start to get a bit rusty, the door bottoms are already going :(

Forgot to add that the idler pulleys were replaced a few weeks ago as well.

  4. 89,3xx miles.

Checking thing off the list slowly but surely. The new door brake and door reinforcement plates arrived a few weeks ago and will go on whenever I feel like welding the plate in, both roundels were replaced, driver's front regulator was replaced, general module was replaced, and I put a Z3 shifter in last night. l'm a big fan of the shorter throws and feel, it'll be interesting to see how notchy it feels when it gets cold again though.

Next on the list is rear sway bar links, a few new moulding pieces to replace the ones that are rusting and falling off, and lumbar for the driver's seat. Between all that and a new apartment, I'm going to be busy the next few weeks.

I’m pretty far out on the East side but work on the West. So you there’s a good chance to see me around. Once some new parts start trickling in I’ll start a very lame build thread so my car might be a bit more identifiable.

Realized I never welcomed you here, so welcome! I grew up on the east side and still come back most weekends, so hopefully I'll see you around. Always good to have more cars in the Alpine club!

is that transom going to remove itself from the boat on the first hole shot?

Man, I hope not. Would be a crappy start to ski season.

In all seriousness though, these boats are built specifically as multi-engine towboats, so they’re pretty well reinforced and don’t have any problems taking the load as long as they’re kept up and aren’t rotted out. The transom itself is probably 4ish inches thick and has half inch aluminum plates reinforcing it on either side as well. A demonstration of what they’re actually capable of pulling:

    80 person pyramid:

Barefoot line (pulled at probably 42ish mph):

Fun fact: I’m almost positive both of these records were set in Wisconsin.

All it needs now is some zoomies!

😂 I’ll pass it along to the board. There’s actually concern about these being pretty loud already, they’re not known for being the quietest outboard around.

    That looks insane

It’s pretty wild to see them pulling 30-40+ people off of the dock, then going and pulling barefoot pyramids at 40+ mph (the team has two 900hp triple rigs like this). The power makes them crazy versatile. My favorite though is when you end up with this pulling a single 8 y/o around on a ski trainer or something, it’s hilarious.

  8. I'd be in, sounds like a good time. The local C&C I normally go to has started to have issues with people being mouthbreathers, and the average quality of the cars that show up seems to have dropped significantly as well, so this sounds like a breath of fresh air.

    Congrats on the new house!

All videos with really good sounding S54s are deepfakes of an E36 M3 with a pitch adjustment /s

It is entirely possible to have a great sounding S54 but I have yet to find a quiet setup that sounds good enough to spend money on. Loud enough to actually hear it while driving but quiet enough to hear the induction sound and not be a nuissance.

When you see inside the stock muffler its a bit baffling at how they arrived at such a design.

Most of the nice sounding ones are running catless headers+resonators with an aftermarket muffler and are just stupid loud. It seems that adding back quieter mufflers just seems to cut the noise but maintain the rasp, which is exactly what I would want to get away from. I wonder if going to quad resonators, x-pipe, catless headers, and a moderately quiet muffler would be the solution?

Have any pics of said muffler guts?

Good point, there is a ton of value in in-person meets and I really enjoy them but they do take a lot of effort to organize (and thank you to those that take the lead on that)

Agreed, the time needed to organize seems to limit the frequency of large gatherings to only a few times a year, at least for a group of this size. I'm thinking that may point to larger events that someone else has already planned (read: C&C) being part of the solution, because all we have to do is show up or meet somewhere close by and drive there.

@B C isn't there already something of a scrolly format under the activity tab? It does have like/reaction activity in it I guess.

I'll echo the thanks the others have given, first to @YoungCR for continuing to keep the site maintained and going strong, and then to everyone who helps organize, plan and run events. I appreciate you!

  11. Take all these opinions with a grain of salt, but I personally love the forum format. The few Facebook car groups I’m in are generally just repeated questions and bickering, the forum format really seems to tone down both of those and promote a little more thoughtful discussion and many informative posts. Live chat would be cool, it’d be fun to have some more casual conversation sometimes.

More meets/cruises/gatherings would definitely help bring more people in, I think (that was how I found out about this site, at cars and coffee). I like seeing what everyone else is doing, but I also really enjoy actually seeing everyone and getting the car out with others. I plan on going to as many Lake Mills C&C events as I can this year (provided they happen), and I’d love to start seeing a regular contingent of WIBimmers people show up. I hope to hit the Madison one a few times as well as the ones in the Milwaukee area too, and really think those might be a good way for us all to get together a bit more and start bringing in new people. The drives we’ve done in the past have been a blast as well, but I know they’re more work to plan. I tentatively hope to help plan some more things this summer, but we’ll see how the new job goes.

  12. I know regular E30's have been increasing in price, but seriously? Is anyone actually buying these for this kind of money? An auto m20 sedan with mediocre body, comfort seats, needing a head gasket and a full suspension refresh seems like a MAX $1500-$2000 car to me. Am I really just behind the times or is this guy delusional for thinking he'll get this?

  13. Stumbled onto this one (and this channel) tonight. Some of the voiceovers are a little off, but the cinematography is pretty impressive. Talk about a beautiful car, too.

And in the spirit of Sabine, I figured I'd share this too. When asked if the 'ring was the best track she'd ever been on, she said "Road America is not bad too. Very good track."

Talk about a loss in the motorsports community.

  14. I haven't looked at powertrain stuff much specifically, but a guy I went to school with bought a used I8 and has had a ton of issues with the a/c compressor. Apparently they use the a/c loop to cool the batteries, and the compressor is either under-specced for the application or just a bad design/part, and they prematurely grind themselves to bits and throw metal into the whole a/c loop. He had his replaced once, and within a few hundred miles the new one was already making a ton of noise again too (mind you, this car is like 3-4 years old with 16,000ish miles I want to say). Seems like an expensive nightmare for the used buyer, since to fix it properly you probably have to flush the whole a/c system including the battery loop.
