common tools get pretty much any job done on an e30. my portable toolkit in the trunk has:

3/8 ratchet with 8, 10, 13, 15, 17 mm

adjustable wrench

pliers

screwdrivers

zip ties

duct tape

jumper cables

spare taillight bulbs

common, but less used tools for an e30:

32mm thin wall socket for hubs

22mm (cant remember) socket for steering wheel

custom or bicycle specific 32mm wrench for fan clutch

oil filter strap tool for the damn oil filter.

if you have a high quality 3/8 metric set of deep and shallow sockets, a set of 3/8 alien sockets, e-torx sockets, wire strippers and pliers, a dead blow hammer, #1 #2 #3 Philips screwdrivers, a low profile jack, 2 tall and 2 short jack stands, and metric open end wrenches you should given common sense, time, and the internet be able to repair or rebuild just about any component on any BMW chassis. that being said I have a 3000$ tool box with close to 25k worth of tools in my garage and still take things to a local shop on occasion.
