  1. This happened today trying to put the helper springs back in my coilovers...

    IMG_1528.JPG

Basically the top hat nut would always loosen itself after a few hundred miles of driving even with Loctite Blue.

I put Loctite Red on last fall and it is some strong stuff. I got the passenger side loose but I should have heated the drivers side :(

Now just the front driver side of my car is slammed and I have a broken lower strut mount bolt and a coilover that I'm gonna have to take a cutoff wheel to so I can reuse my camber plates. Not too big of a deal, they were blown Raceland coilovers that never should have made it onto a M3
    IMG_1529.JPG

I have to park the car all lopsided and broken for the next month and a half now, new coilovers and entire rear end next. Back to school on Sunday so this thread wont be updated until mid May.

I'm not going to use the Vaico pads in the pic above also haha

  2. Took another trip down to Milwaukee today, the same guy I bought the LTW seats from offered to sell me a set of his rather rare wheels so I bought em

    3 piece 17x8.5/17x9 +37 Fikse Mach V with 245/40r17 Bridgestone G-Force tires

    IMG_1515.JPG

Rear needs to come up a bit

    IMG_1516.JPG

The front wheels require spacers to not rub on my coilovers, and all I had laying around was a 20mm set. I'm thinking 5-8mm will be perfect up front when I'm actually going to drive the car.

    IMG_1523.JPG

The car already looks way different and is about 2 1/2 inches higher in the front! I'm starting to like this look way more then being slammed on stretched tires... Might drop down to a 235/40 because these tires are really beefy

  3. Got a decent amount done today

Took my vaders out and vacuumed the carpet/deep cleaned interior

    IMG_1493.JPG

    New E-brake boot in

    The little things

    IMG_1484.JPGIMG_1486.JPG

Unfortunately I came across some rust under the rear seat and a mouse nest behind the outer rear seat cushion

    IMG_1499.JPG

On the underside of the car, this is where the brake line bracket is mounted up by the gas tank, looks like a small crack was coming off the rusted area as well.

filled the hole and crack with welds

    IMG_1500.JPGIMG_1502.JPG

    Mouse nest:

    IMG_1495.JPG

I cant find any signs of mice anywhere else in the car, and none of the nest was made of wire insulation.

    Cleaned up:

    IMG_1496.JPG

Took the mouse piss insulation out and the rest under the rear seat

    IMG_1498.JPG

about 10 lbs worth in weight savings

Took the  headliner and rear parcel shelf out. The rear shelf I re-wrapped a few years ago in black alcantara, and from the pictures you can see what it's become. The headliner has been sagging forever and when I had my windows down the airflow would make headliner glue blow all over the back of my interior. I cleaned up all of that glue/foam today too. Headliner and rear deck re-wrap later this week

    IMG_1503.JPGIMG_1504.JPGIMG_1508.JPG

Put the LTW seats in. I love them way more then my vaders already

    IMG_1510.JPG

And now I'm about to go out to the garage to deal with this from the previous owner:

    IMG_1505.JPG

I wanted to throw in a OEM radio, but I remembered I have my brothers new JVC radio that I pulled from his car before he scrapped it. It has Bluetooth and stuff, and doesn't look outrageous. It also weighs like 2 lbs less then the ugly pioneer super tuner that's been in the car since I got it.

  4. Kinda boring post but, I took a trip to Gibson's in Neenah today and picked up some parts

It's pretty crazy, they have at least 20 E36's and tons of E34's, E39's and E46's

95% of the E36's have been picked over hard or rained/snowed in for a year so it's always kinda hard to find decent stuff

    I managed to find:

    • OEM gas cap with sticker still on it (to replace my junk steel Autozone one)
    • Blinker harness plugs
    • Seat nut covers
    • Seat belt nut covers (couldn't believe it)
    • Really nice genuine floor mats out of a '94 318i with anchors to replace my universal floor mats
    • A super nice genuine leather E-brake boot that looks new (broken rear tab on the one in my M3)
    • A not blown hood strut so my hood doesn't fall and smash me in the skull again
    • Tow hook
    • Wiper nut covers
    • Sport seat rear net (Turns out neither of my vaders are missing the net and I'm delusional)
    • A 1997 Concours calendar card (oddly enough my M3 was sold new at Concours in 1997)

Everything listed only cost me $21!

Really all I did today was the junkyard run and wash the floor mats

    IMG_1466.JPGIMG_1468.JPG

    IMG_1476.JPGIMG_1477.JPG

Also saw a E34 touring and Supra Turbo in the yard

This car looks way better than you make it out to be.

I play the angles and keep my distance when taking pics of the car :(

I'm on spring break so I have about a week here to do a few things with the car while I'm home from school. Today I pulled the car out of storage, took the Rays Gram Lights and adapters off and drove to Milwaukee to deliver them to the buyer as well as pick up something pretty rare for the M3... Although the exterior of the car always bummed me out, it actually has a very nice complete black interior. Nothing is broken, door panel are all intact and not falling apart, 99 steering wheel etc. The opportunity came up to buy a pair of seats from a LTW M3 for $500! The guy I bought the seats from (Might be on here?) built a track car out of a LTW that had wrecked at Road America a long time ago. He's had the seats for 15 years in his basement, and I don't think I'll ever come across another set not attached to a LTW for sale. I'm pretty excited, and tomorrow I'm going to take a trip to the junk yard to pick up some door sill trim and take my vaders out/ throw the new seats in!

  6. Skip to the last year, the car sat in a garage for 8 months, I put my entire interior back in the car, I replaced a broken clutch master cylinder and return spring (the clutch return spring was the worst thing I've ever done on my car), I cut my rear arches, threw on Hard Motorsports flares and finally painted all of the primer spots on my car. My paint work doesn't look that great, but it's better then rust and I plan on vinyl wrapping the car so it looks like I have nice paint anyways.

Now I'm kinda caught up with the build thread...

  7. Come along with me on this journey as I de-stance my very rough M3 and make it functional

With the help of you guys, I decided not to part out my M3 and continue to enjoy it until i'm out of school.

I've owned the car since I was 16 (5 years) and should have a build thread that is like 30 pages long. Better late then never, I don't wanna make a huge list of everything I've done (nothing crazy) so i'll start from where I'm at.

The car looked absolutely horrible when I first got it in 2013. Broken front bumper, missing front lip, blacked out corner lights and tail lights, pink wheels, purple peeling window tint, fake carbon fiber eBay emblems

Here is a few pics from the early years after undoing everything the previous owner did

ChrisO, ever considered just looking for a clean shell? If wasnt m3's shell is in good shape maybe pick it up and swap everything over from your car? Solves both your problems.

I would love a slick top 4 door but I remember seeing the shell on craigslist in Chicago and I'm pretty sure it has body rust/ holes in the rockers and footwell areas. (If I'm wrong about that I'm sorry wasntm3)

I mean I would buy the wheels=) Forgot to mention that before haha

17x9 +22 Rays Gram Lights with 15mm Ichiba 5x120-114.3 adapters, definitely a stretch making them fit even with the Hard Motorsports flares. If I part out I'll message you first before I post them up ;)

With the rust, I would almost think that parting it out would net you the most money, IF you don't mind doing all the work. There is a lot of effort in pulling everything, advertising, dealing with tire-kickers/lowballers, etc. I'd be wary of selling it as is if the rust repair wasn't professional and in a structural location, you'd need to make sure you advertise it accurately and when you do sell, have a solid bill of sale that clearly states "as is".

That being said, it's a great looking car and if it were me, I would consider finding a clean coupe and re-shelling it! You can sell all the leftovers and come out even or ahead, and have a clean/rust free car.

I wouldn't consider the repaired rusted out sections like a driving danger, but If I put a jack to it I'm sure it would bend/not be safe. I'd love to find a coupe shell but the timing is just never right. I'm in a tough position being in college where I'd only have the space for 2 cars from July to August, and I also have never seen a rust free coupe shell in Wisconsin with a clean title. My dad sold his truck with a hitch, and I have no trailer also. I think you are right about the part out. I really feel like I'd be ripping people off trying to get $3500-4000 for the car (without the $1300 wheels), and also wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing some kid just put a jack stand on the jack pad I reconstructed with my welds. If I was completely honest saying that this car isn't structurally all safe I doubt anyone would want it for more then $2800

  9. Hey guys, I'm thinking that after 5 years of owning a E36 M3 thats full of body filler and has patched sheet metal all over I might want to move on. The shell is done for and will never not have rust somewhere. The rear jack points in the rockers had rusted through, and although I cut out the rust and welded 16 gauge plate in, I wouldn't trust my welds supporting the weight of the car. I feel like it wouldn't be safe to sell the car to someone else nor would I get much with the shell having 100 rust hole patches on the floor pan and rockers.

Those of you that have parted out E36 M3's, how fast did you move all the parts and what kinda money did you make? I'm assuming it wouldn't be too hard to hit selling like $2000 worth of parts in the first month or so including the motor and trans, but I'd like some input. The car is a '97 coupe, 5 speed with 220k miles. It has a few aftermarket goodies and a nice complete black interior with heated vaders, the s52 runs smooth and has 170+ compression in all cylinders. Really nothing is wrong with the car other then the fact that the body is rusting into the ground. Tons of stuff has been replaced.

I'm just trying to figure out if I want to keep driving it or if it's worth it to part it out (worth it to me is making like $3500-4000). I don't really have a feel for what the demand of parts is like. I don't wanna just sell the seats, diff and motor then have the rest sit for a year :( I've seen a few of you guys parting out E36 M3's in the last few months

Posting this makes me wanna cry after 5 years and 25k miles, but I can't stand the rust.
