    Maintenance time!

Finally got around to taking a look at a noise from the motor that has been increasing in volume lately, sounded like a pulley bearing on the way out. Made like a high pitched whine/grinding noise and was worse when the car was cold. Once warmed up, it quieted down reasonably well. Started by removing both tensioner pulleys and the idler pulley, removing the seals, and repacking them with some high temp grease. They were all pretty dry and crusty and that definitely quieted things down, but didn’t completely eliminate the noise. Because the new pulleys are so cheap, I just ordered new ones rather than trying to stretch the life of the ones on the car, just not worth the risk to me.

I then looked at the alternator, which upon inspection had bad bearings (spun like there was no grease in them anymore and were a bit crunchy sounding). Attempted to replace just the bearings but couldn’t get a few fasteners off and just said screw it and bought a reman unit from O’Reillys. Lifetime warranty on the unit, so even if it’s not amazing I’m fine with replacing it every few years for free.

Finally, I have a new set of front sway bar links on the way to address a front end clunk that started a few months ago.

On a different note, I’m ready to begin priming and painting the m-systems after stripping and media blasting all the old paint off. I was told by the seller that they had been previously stripped and painted, but it seemed that only one of the wheels had received that treatment; the other three had what looked to be the OEM paint underneath the rattle can paint. No matter, it was all coming off anyways.

After some discussion and deliberation, I decided against my original plan of polishing out the lips and will instead stick to paint for the whole wheel. With that said, any thoughts on a color for the lip? I can’t decide between a bright, almost “polished aluminum” type paint to give the look of polished wheels, or if I should just stick to the stock OEM BMW silver paint. Stock paint will likely be easier to sell, but I do really like the polished lip look. Any opinions?

No idea what those are, although I don't think they are fake. Vintage MOMO wheels had the embossed logo like that. Look at MOMO GTP or magnesium wheels.  I spent more time that I should admit searching. I assume they are some type of competition wheel by the style of them. Sizing on the other hand likely would not make them worth much unless they are made from something that is not aluminum (Magnesium or titanium).

Yeah, seems odd that someone would go though the trouble of making replica momos in a style like this, but who knows. Tempted to run back down there and ask the guy if I can pull a wheel to check to specs or markings just for giggles. I’m really intrigued by these, even if they are fake I’d like to know more about them. Also gives me a chance to see what lowering springs and suspension work it has...

  3. Sigh.

Guess I’m not going to the brew city cruise night. I was around 5 minutes away, coming down the off ramp when this happened, pedal went to the floor but I was able to pump it up enough to stop. Looks like both caliper bolts came out somehow, mangling the brake shield and shearing the soft line. Got REALLY lucky with this one. Could’ve been a lot worse.

Saw @Partiallypurple drive by, car looks great man! That whole group looked awesome for that matter.

Sounds like a car I would be interested in (manual?), but the title issue isn't something I'd want to deal with either. Keep me in mind if you decide to dig into this more. You can keep the wheels if you want them. 😉

Yup, manual 535is. I’m gonna check today to see if it has a LSD, might make it worth it for a partout or something. Drivers side front fender is gone, as is the front bumper, grilles, valance, etc. Hood is a little bent up as well. Interior is mostly gone, all the seats and door cards are missing with the exception of the rear seat bottom.

Apparently it was the victim of a pretty stupid move by the previous owner, who tried to tow it around his yard or something with his pickup. Left it in gear with the ignition on, and it bump-started itself and hit a small tree, resulting in the damage. Radiator was fine though and doesn’t look like it was hit hard enough to do real damage. I guess the intention was to convert it to a track car, but it never got finished.

I’ll keep you in the loop for sure!

I've been searching all over and I can't figure out what they are, but they look cool! They're close to MOMO Star's (a personal favorite of mine, especially the R3) but the spokes are wider, they dont have provisions for a center cap that covers the lugs, and they have MOMO embossed on the spoke.

I came to the same conclusion, they look a lot like a one-piece version of the R3. I’ll keep digging, maybe someone on R3V or Facebook would have some insight. There’s gotta be an old catalog somewhere that has them on it, wouldn’t you think?

If it's decently clean it would be worth tracking down the title. They're worth money now more than ever.

You might be right, I’ll look into what the process might be for this case. I don’t want to get myself into an expensive mess for a rough e28 if I don’t have to. I believe the guy said it was a SC or GA car, the underside would make me believe that. No rust on the pans that I saw.

Nice find! First time that I have seen those as well

It seems that they made some similar styles, but yeah I’ve never seen these. I really like them on the car, they fit it well. I have to fight the urge to get the car they’re attached to, it’s a project 535is but it’s cheap. The dealbreaker is no title 😢. I might drive by it again and see if it has a LSD, that alone would be worth near what he’s asking. Could be a decent partout candidate.

  8. There’s an old e28 parked outside a shop near my house with these wheels on it. I looked for awhile today and wasn’t able to even find another picture of them, +10 internet points to whoever can figure out what specific type of MOMO wheels they are. All I can tell from looking at them is that they’re 16x7 or something similar.

  9. Hit a milestone today... little hard to see but that’s the big 200,000!

Had a great evening of spirited driving to mark the occasion, and the clouds even cleared a little for a nice sunset and some neat photos.

I’m not really sure why some of my photos keep getting rotated when posting on the mobile site, kinda weird. Also, sorry for the compressed image quality, my phone is a dinosaur and doesn’t like playing nice with big files.

This week I officially accepted a position with SD Wheel/Fitment Industries/Custom Offsets as the Commodity Manager over Suspension and Accessories and gave notice at my current job.  I'm thrilled to start working with these guys in a segment that i'm so passionate about!

Congrats! Sounds like a fun place to work!

When I bought a new tank it was only ~$190 off of Rock Auto. But I’m guessing the verts have different fuel tanks than the coupes.

Was that including shipping? And no, I believe all the 325i’s have the same tank. Which one did you get? When I priced it out it came to a good bit more than that if I remember right.

The people who dont move over are watching tik tok videos. Seems like replacing the fuel tank is a rite of passage when owning a midwest e30.

Report back on how the valve adjustment helps!

Seems like valve adjustments either provide no noticable benefit, or they make all the difference and the idle/drivability improve and cure some ailments that werent expected

Will do! The last time I did it, it made a big difference since the lash was set too tight and the car wasn’t idling as well, but I also lost a bit of power. More of a checkup than anything else to make sure nothing is up.
