  1. I clamped the lolipop in a vice and used dishsoap and water solution (probably close to 50/50 ratio) and then pushed the arm into it. I just eye-balled the angle, so it probably wasn't optimal. It wasn't easy or fun, so make sure you put them on the right way the first time... facepalm.gif

  2. I wasn't against it until I saw the dashboard. The rounded plastic interiors of the 90s are one of the worst automotive legacies that decade left behind IMO. I've always been a fan of clean, minimalist design though, so I'm a little biased.

  3. Remeber too that the oil pump speed is propotional to engine speed. Oil doesn't compress, so the flow volume should be roughly proportional to rpm. My gut feeling is that an engine spinning 4000rpm doesn't require 4x the oil flow of one that's spinning 1000rpm. The pump is likely sized to provide barely adaquate flow at idle so that there's not exsessive losses and heat generated at higher rpms.

  4. I am unsure of how to embed videos but these are great=P

I love the blue compact with the siren whipping around

Edit: Looks like they auto embeded. Youtube is block at work so I have no clue if they work or not.....

Oh man, youtube rally videos. More than a few times I've had a quick search or a curious click turn into a 2-hour long binge. So much awesome...

Some e21 action in the 2nd video too! @6:40 - E9?! Not sure whether I should be appalled or giving mad props for that one... DAMN!

  5. It was garbage.  He would let it go for 300 but I think the ECU is fried, he wasn't telling the whole story about what happened, claims he replaced the battery and it wouldn't start right away.  It cranks strong but no spark and no fuel pump, not even the 5 second prime when the key is turned to run.  Would hooking up battery backwards fry it?  Not sure but the fuel pump works fine when the relay is jumpered.  I did not test jumpering the engine control module relay, it is also controlled by the ECU.  I am not sure the sequence of operation as to when that should close.  Unless the problem is that relay I would deduce that the ECU is no good.

Overall the car was maybe a 2/10.  Rockers made of spray foam and bondo, floor peeling away the seam to the rocker.  Bald tires, rip in driver seat, etc.  Not worth 300 even.

Thanks for posting about this one. I came across it while searching for M42s. Don't know anything about the anti-theft systems, but I figured it would be easy to reset. If it was a runner I would be interested in it for the motor. I don't have any way of moving non-running cars :/

  6. Yeah, I'm glad that the head is okay. My other one is pretty bad.

My visit to Appleton Crankshaft didn't go that well. It turns out the crank can probably be saved. The bad news is that the block is "not fixable". The main caps must have warped, because they don't fit in the block like they should. He said the big ends of the rods are probably bad, but I'll have to check them.

I've never had a machinist tell me that something was straight up " not fixable" before. For some reason I found that amusing.

  7. Got the motor torn down last night and took some crappy pics on the way out the door. The top end actually looked great. I didn't inspect them too closely, but the cylinders looked okay too. The bottom end though....

The worst damage is on the main journals. The bearings were a little melty, which I'm pretty sure is not desirable. Three of them I had to pry at a little to get the two halves to separate. The last bearing at the flywheel end was actually completely fused together on one side, but I think I was able to get them all off without doing any more damage.

I'm taking some stuff in today to get a professional diagnosis.

  8. Thanks for the support guys.

I really had my heart set on getting an M42 swapped into the E21 this winter and having a nice driver/fun machine for next summer. "Redneck stepchild" has a nice ring to it though. I'd love to have a beater/rallycross/ice racing/whatever car, but I don't know if I have the time or budget to do both. I guess we'll be playing it by ear from here out. I have another dead M42 in the garage, so if I get the other one, I'll have 3 dead ones to try and make 1 good one and another one to power this thing. Time for plan "F".

  9. Bust.

Luckily it was just me in the car, and there was no other traffic. I'm fine, but the car is not.

I'm a bit wary of posting too many details on a public forum, but suffice to say that bad decisions + bad driving + bad road conditions + bad tires = shit-damn-fuck. It wouldn't be so bad if it was just the sheet metal, but I smashed the hell out of the oil-pan too, and then tried to drive it home without realizing that there was no oil in the engine. Just got the engine on the stand today, and it's not pretty.

I've been in denial for almost a week now thinking that I'd get it back on the road, but it might be time to throw in the towel on this one.
