  1. Interesting stuff.  On the V70R I had I had an issue where clutch engagement suddenly became jerky.  What I found was that the clutch did not have a simple switch, it was a linear potentiometer so that the ECU could determine clutch pedal position.  The potentiometer failed and the ECU must change its response rate during clutch engagement to assist smoothness and was no longer doing that.  Those had a Bosch Motronic ME7 ECU.  The way I figured the issue out was that shortly after it became jerky the cruise would not set either so that got me looking at ECU values for the brake switch and clutch sensor.

Not exactly the same thing but another example of the electronic throttle body response being different during different conditions.

  2. The sensor is sensing the cold side of the radiator which is essentially the coolant supplied to the engine.  I've had great results with an 80/88c low speed/ high speed switch on multiple e36s but on an e30 I tried it on it seemed late to turn on and the e30 fan isn't as good as e36 aux fan (spal should be better though).  I was uncomfortable and reinstalled the mechanical fan.  I didn't have a real temp gauge though so I am not sure what the temp really was.

Sorry to hear about your loss, B C. Two of my family members died of this in Mexico (their daughter also caught it, no updates on that).  A long time friend of mine died of this earlier this year, my grade school gym teacher got pretty sick, but thankfully recovered.

It does look like the mask mandate is working, sucks that we have to wear one, but it is what it is.

What data is showing that the mask mandate is working?

  4. I think everyone is overthinking the fluid type.  I've used Redline power steering fluid for a long time in many BMWs and other cars with no issues.  It is a high end synthetic, but is also labeled only for power steering so maybe different additives?

The pump won't last long without fluid, they are a rotary vane pump.  I would recommend finding a ZF pump and rebuilding it before you install it.  I've done one and it isn't hard, then you won't have to deal with more leaks later.

How does this compare to the number of tests being done?  It looks alarming but it needs to be overlaid with how many tests are being done, otherwise it is useless.  Also death numbers would be helpful.  According to DHS it does not appear that deaths in Dane county are rising at all thankfully.  DHS

  6. They changed the campsite process this year it appears.  Now you just list your top 3 choices.  Last year it used to be you picked off of a map.  Maybe they are they trying to leave gaps between occupied campsites?  I'll be outside of turn 8 away from the party zone 🙂 Two kids coming this year, they grow up fast.  It will be my oldest daughters 4th year.

The key is differentiating between protesters and opportunist.  If it were even possible I think we'd be hard pressed to find much crossover between the people rioting and looting and the people protesting. I would venture to say there's less than 1% carryover from the two groups.  The problem I see is that most of us can't separate the two groups.  It's like lumping every Catholic in with every rapist priest or person who drinks alcohol with every alcoholic.  Also, as stated before, I am not a tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy theorist but if I look at this from a strategic point of view I see a great way for a group to push an agenda by burning down businesses and looting stores especially when I know the cause and effect won't be clearly defined by the media.

Exactly, and the reports of black owned businesses being destroyed along with everything else I think is showing that there are opportunistic extremist groups using this to cause chaos.

  8. Well I think the key is differentiating between protesting and rioting.  There are many ways to protest without destroying property of others.  How does that help anything to destroy your own neighborhood?  That is shooting yourself in the foot to spite someone else, but your foot is the thing shot off.

To clarify I don't know of ANYONE who doesn't think killing George Floyd wasn't murder from excessive and unnecessary force.  The police departments in certain areas have big problems that need to be addressed.  I encourage people to go out and protest for a cause they care about.  But burning buildings, graffiti, breaking windows, etc is rioting not protesting and only hurts any voice you think you have.  And it ruins your own neighborhood in the process.  And if you are going somewhere else to riot and destroy things then even more shame on you.  Would you want people to come and trash your neighborhood for something that has nothing to do with you?

I'm not saying it would have been the right thing to do but it would have been more logical if people burned down the house of the guy that killed George Floyd or maybe drag him out in the street and lynch him.  I'm not saying that should have been done but it would make more sense than destroying random stuff and would also have maybe made some bad cops think twice about acting stupid.

  9. So you determined that the low speed resistor on the fan was bad?  I think I removed a failed resistor on an e30 once and just connected the wires.  Then when the temp sensor calls for low or high speed it will just run high speed.  Costs nothing and the fan runs on high speed right away.

  10. I live in the middle of nowhere about a half hour west of Wausau.  If anyone wants to come there is a cool pizza farm about a mile down the road.  Wood fired pizza ovens, every ingredient grown on his farm.  Also he makes beer too.  Stoney Acres Farm.  I've got 26 acres and a nice basement to crash in.  I would be happy to host a meetup if anyone wants to come.

Had a few moments to work on the car over the weekend, so I finally wired in a pair of early e36 window switches and pigtails. Got them wired in and both the switches are bad. Nice!

One switch only works sometimes, the other only goes down. The behavior follows the switches when swapped so my wiring is good at least. I took them apart and they look a little corroded. Going to try and clean the contacts and re-solder any joints. If that fails I'll just have to get some new ones.

Try cleaning the contacts up, I have had intermittent e30 window switches and cleaning fixed them.  The full current goes through the switch and the arcing pits the contacts.

  13. 0 deaths yesterday.  WI DHS

Like it or not in a few weeks we will see what the results are.

Hopefully it will be like what is happening in Georgia.  Deaths continue to steadily decline and they opened many things over 3 weeks ago.  Check out the deaths over time graph here.  GA DPH

People are missing the point of why the order was reversed.  IT WAS ILLEGAL.  Put something else in place, fine.  But if you give up freedoms for a small amount of security, you are already done for.  We have checks and balances in place for this exact reason.

I'm not going to be heading to a bar anytime soon, but I'm glad that I can decide that.  If you are so fucking worried about what everyone else does, get a job as a policeman or teacher or something.

My wife's spa is fully reopening Monday.  There is a long list of new internal regulations that she is implementing (on her own, not per any ordinances).  People will be asked ot comply or not come.

The funny thing is, all hair stylists and nail techs are trained in disease control, sterilization, etc.  They literally have to take a 4 credit course every year or two on hygiene to stay up to date.  They are trained more than any other profession on how to keep clients and themselves safe, yet they've been shut down the longest.  It just goes to show you that the people who determined the shut down had no idea of reality.

Exactly, it was illegal, therefore no matter whether it was helpful or not it cannot be done here.  In other countries that have different laws sure go for it.  The ruling from what I understand wasn't even about whether the stay at home order contents were legit or not it was that it could not be implemented by Evers or Andrea Palm without approval of the other branches.

If you are worried about what everyone else is doing and like to control people please actually do not become a policeman...

  15. Wait did I miss the part where without a stay at home order you HAVE to go out of your house?  As far as I am aware if you are worried about the virus or any other thing you can stay home indefinitely if you want to.

    https://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/covid-19/deaths.htm

I guess we wait a couple weeks and look at the data again to see if the line moves from it's very horizontal trajectory.  Deaths per day have been a steady flat line since the beginning of April.  It will be pretty easy to see if the line starts trending upwards.

What is quite bad is the 43% of WI deaths are happening at old folks homes.  And 71% of deaths are of people 70 or older.  So hmm, I won't go see any elderly family or friends.

I personally will choose not to go to a packed bar, or even Walmart, etc.  I don't need a "law" to tell me I can't.  Even in non pandemic time I still avoid those places 😛

Edit:  And don't be scared, there are already local extensions where most of you live anyway.

These videos well showcase why I got rid of the diesel in lieu of something that can actually go off-road.... or at least that's my excuse!

What kind of lockers?  I recently put a Spartan auto locker in the rear of my Land Cruiser.  Major upgrade for not much money.
