My car an E46 323i with 70,000 miles started to develop a grinding noise on downshifts into 2nd gear and sometimes the inability to engage 1st gear while fully stopped. I opted to repair my trans instead of replacement. I figured I should share some pictures of the process. I didn't document the entire process because its pretty in depth and my hands were constantly covered in oil. So far I have the trans pulled, case split and inspected my gear train and have most of my parts. My first gear friction ring for my synchro was completely shot (pictures to come), along with small amounts of wear on the friction ring for the 2nd gear synchro.

Excellent!  I have wanted to take a transmission apart, I have a g250 that the output bearing exploded in (I didn't torque the output nut correctly) that I will take apart someday when I am bored.

Very cool, also want to do the same but I hear the G260 cases are hard to crack. Does the E46 Bentley cover transmissions too?

This case was pretty tough to split! I'm lucky enough to have All Data to my advantage

Any special tools required to change the syncros? I suspect my 240 will have the same issue with 1st gear.

BMW lists several special service tools but if you use your imagination you can create them. You will need a bearing splitter and something to press the gear train out of the input shaft bearing. Thats all that comes to mind right now
