  1. So it finally happened, I bought my new toy. I flew out to Cleveland, OH yesterday to pick up my new baby, an 07 335i. Now that its finally home I can share a couple pics of it, so here she sits.

Its 100% stock (for now), just ticked over 81k miles on the way home, and has sport and cold weather packages. Also has a third pedal, that was an interesting experience. My first manual trip, alone, and starting at an airport during rush hour. Then headed across three states and 500 miles of toll roads. Good practice for sure, but I do wish I could have taken my time a little.

Anyways, it needs a little TLC but I don't think anything too bad. Badges front and rear are worn off so the front one is in the mail. Brakes are a little wobbly so those will need to be redone soon. Windshield wipers miss a spot right across the rain sensor so the automatic wipers don't work properly, those will need to be replaced. Oh and I don't know if this is normal or not, but it smokes out of the exhaust on start up a little (only for a minute or two), and the oil temp seems to run around 220-230 during highway driving which isn't dead center.

But I feel like I got a good deal on it and I have extra money set aside for repairs and mods, but I plan to do mostly just maintenance this year. I don't know that any of the usual wear items have been replaced, so I'm thinking it will at least need plugs and coils as preventative items, and I'll have my shop do an oil change and inspection to see if they find any leaks or other stuff that needs attention. If that doesn't ruin me I'll be able to do all the usual bolt-ons sometime next spring hopefully.

On a side note, I lost my apartment/parking ramp keys someplace during the trip, so the car is 15 minutes away from me at my inlaws :( I miss it already

Damn, that sucks. Did you at least get your deposit back?

Yeah he sent that back, its just such a shitty way to lose out on a great car. The whole point of a deposit is to hold the car for me, it was a done deal. Time to search high and low again.

  3. So the buzz is gone and I got screwed, the car is gone.

I sent the guy a deposit and was waiting for the results of an inspection from his local dealer, but got a call instead that he sold the car to someone else. Needless to say I'm not happy, and now back in the market for another car.

Such a shame, it was everything I wanted and he screwed me over to get $500 more, 5 days earlier.

In the past, the M5 was the car you bought if you want something that can go 200 mph and be comfortable, but still have some attention to the road. AMG was the 200 mph and more luxurious with a stronger motor, but far less "driver-centric". As far as anyone with a brain can see, BMW is shifting the discussion away from driving experience and over to clinical results.

I think that's a really fair point, but hard to say for sure until you get to drive it. The leaked specs from a while ago suggested this generation actually lost some weight (or is staying pretty close after the awd system) because of the newer lighter chasis, and with the rwd only mode it could be loads of fun.

To me, the idea of it getting softer comes from the pursuit of no compromise, which is way up there on the reasons I love BMW. Any monkey with a wrench can make a bad car go fast, but BMW makes wonderful cars go fast. As they get better at doing so, going fast becomes easier for the engineers and the drivers, and you're left with something easy to drive. A fantastic achievement but perhaps a boring experience.

Personally I think I can look past all that and respect the car for what it is; Unique with the awd system, nice to look at, and ridiculously fast for its size.

  5. The 330 sold for $8500 with both sets of wheels. Other than the stock set of tires being worth more than I thought, I think I made out okay.

And thanks! I'm excited to pick it up next week hopefully. I still want to see yours again, hopefully you get it running again soon.

  6. Personally I'm extremely impressed with the stats on the car. I can't say I've driven past M5s, but to my mind an M5 is the best car you can create with 4 doors and 5 seats. If you want a more precise driving experience you have other, smaller, cars for that. Let BMW go mad with awd and dct and see how fast they can make something this fat move.

Also that interior is absolutely stunning

  7. Yeah actually, calling a guy near Chicago about picking up an 07 E92 335i. Montego Blue, sports, cold weather and premium packages, 6 speed, no idrive, and only 62k miles. Already has bolt ons on it, I'll just need to pick up a nice set of wheels, get it walnut blasted and switch the tune to MHD.

I'm still interested in grabbing a nice E46 M3 if one happens to come available for a good price, but they are so hard to find in good shape for less than 15k.

  8. I like it a lot, they will tone it down a little for the production cars and the manual is already confirmed.

And I agree, Z4s age so well that I also hope they go down in price a bit now.

  9. haha I've seen all of these except for the last one. I might contact the last one after I sell mine, if he wants to come down a little that would be perfect.

I've been watching the market for a few months now and seen or contacted most local sellers. I started watching 1addicts after Pat reminded me about the forums for each chasis and they seem to have the nicest cars there.

  10. Thanks, after I sell this I'll have around $14k to play with. I'm almost certain I'll have to fly out to get one though so that will have an impact on the final price. I found one in Miami for around 13, so its looking good so far.

As far as options and features, I really just want to make sure it has the sport package and is well taken care of. I'd like black or red the most, but if its something I don't like I could always wrap it later. Interior can be anything but I'd prefer to stay away from grey this time. Manual is preferred to get my feet wet there, but I can't say a bad thing about the auto either, and with the sport package it should have paddles too.

I was considering the same thing. I always thought it would be cool to run a cruise along the Mississippi river. I have heard many amazing things about "The Great River Road" Hwy 35 in Wisconsin and have never been on it.

I'm in La Crosse on Hwy 35, its a beautiful road and somewhat twisty but essentially just a highway. We wouldn't be able to have much twisty or fast fun, but it would be a great casual cruise.
