  1. Let's jump to the beginning!

I was all over the internet for a couple months searching for e39 wagon.  I6 or V8 just clean.  I found this 540it for $3700 in New Hampshire that the seller just did the timing chain & guides. I booked a plane ticket and let the older seller know in was coming and had cash.  He didn't believe that someone would fly halfway across the country for this wagon.  Some pics of his garage and first pics of the wagon after the drive to Syracuse, NY:

  2. Getting some odds & ends tightening up.

-The steering wheel I got as a replacement had the airbag bracket bent a bit.  Put my old bracket in to had the airbag sit in the wheel at the proper height and not stick out.

    -"New" door sills.

-Grip strip wasn't working on the trunk.  The valet lockout wasn't making the connection.  Bent it a bit and now the grip strip opens the trunk.

-New tabs to correct the loose triiimmm.

What’s the labor time on dropping the subframe? This is something I would like to do in the future as the rear end will be one of the last things that I have gone over in the car.

I’m going to be swapping the diff in my car and I feel like this would be a good time but not sure how far down the rabbit hole I need to go. Drive shaft and exhaust will already be out as I need to replace the gas tank...

edit: just found a pretty good DIY video from Blake’s garage that goes over pretty much everything. Doesn’t look to bad.

It took me about 3 hours.  Take your time and don't strip anything!   Lol

  4. Did a timing chain tensioner for good measure just to know a new one is in there.  PO did the chain & guides.

Threw in a ignition switch as well to try an combat a starting issue.  With 5 series I guess you can just flip the key to the crank-over position for a quick second and it will continue to crank until it starts.  Sometimes I just get a click on the first flick of key and need to flick it in the crank position again for it to fully crank and start.

  5. New tie rods and steering links.  I never new these things, along with the M5s, have steering boxes.  Brings be back to my Jeep days.

The driver's upper rear control arm nut kept loosening up and making the rear tire pigeon toed.  Prime example to spend the money and buy BMW parts.  PO flipped this and cheaper out here and there.

  6. For my sanity, I am going to go from most recent work done to the wagon and work backwards.

    Let's jump in!

    177,XXX miles.

New power steering pump installed.  I think previous owner ran over something going in reverse as the bumper was pulled down (see zip tie holding bumper).   The power steering upper front mount was cracked making the pulley cockeyed and finally leading to an annoying squeaky belt.

New belt tensioner, front and rear OEM rotors

  7. Guys!!!  Real Estate has been crazy leading to passing out after work/family time and not checking in here.

I just sent an email to CATuned and asked them for axels.  They showed up relatively quickly. I think I stretched my driver side diff flange bolts due to  a bunch of grease in the new axle.  Only got one to click at 74 ft/lbs.  Wiped the grease off the passenger side once I pushed the bolts through the axle and all torqued perfectly.  I got 2 Catuned axles for the record.

For the brakes I took out the bias valve and popped in a (I think) 88 rabbit master cylinder. Couldn't get the pedal to feel right.  Looked closer to find out that the MC was leaking out the back/firewall side.  SECOND VW MC that did this to me.  Popped in the stock e30 one and pedal felt great.  I have another 21MM VW MC that I'll try but if that doesn't work I'll go aftermarket.

That's my touring! I have a huge amount of pics and details on that one.  I was blowing Hallway Pat up for parts for about 3 months.  Ughhh.
