  1. I couldn't find any solid info on the spring rates for the different springs. The assumption is that the super sports would be between the regular sports and the race. Seems odd that the "race" springs are more expensive...

No plans to get crazy with the low. I want the car to be a practical daily driver. As is it already attracts a little too much attention for me (the good and the bad kind).

  2. Merry Christmas E30!  Got some H&R "super sport" lowering springs. They're supposed to be the same rate as the sports, only a half inch lower.

So, as long as I had the struts out....

I figured I'd freshen up the suspension a bit. New LCAs, strut tops, sway bar bushings, end links, dust shields, etc....  Cleaned up some rust and added a little paint.

And the winter-bimmer is back on the road.

The old-ass tires are horrifically bad in the snow. So I think I'm going to put some winter tires on the IS meshies and run them. Lots of things that still need attention, but I just want to drive it. If there's something that annoys me too much it might end up back in the shop, but for now I have other projects to work on.

Feels good to back in a bimmer.

  3. I find power steering to be overrated. Maybe it's just because I've never driven a car with power steering that had a decent feel to it. I'll take being able to feel what's happening at the front of the car in a corner over being able to park effortlessly any day. I've only driven one car with manual brakes and that was my first car, a 1963 Chevy Nova. You had to stand on them pretty hard (both feet!) if you really needed to stop. Going from that to power brakes was never really satisfactory though. The cars were easier to stop, but the pedal felt mushy and I never felt like a had as precise of control. For me the pedal feel on the e21 (with power brakes) is perfect. It's firm, but you don't have to stand on it to get the car stopped. I think if the brakes are large enough, and the ratio between the master and slave cylinders was right you could get away with manual brakes, but it's not something I'd do to a car I was expecting to put a lot of miles on.

  4. E30 is back on the road, and I have a written warning to prove it. Okay, so it's just for a tail light out, 3rd brake light not working and no proof of insurance. But....

The tires on the car are awful. It's embarrassing. Considered taking the e21, but the blower motor for the heat doesn't work and there's no radio. I'm going to get some snow tires for the e30 and will hopefully make it out to the next one.

  5. Cool thread.

I'm in the never-even-rode-in-one-before-I-bought-one boat. I decided I was going to buy a 2nd "nice" car for summer, and drive whatever other POS I have around at the time during the winter. I was looking for something RWD, small, light, fun-to-drive, and not a Miata. I like BMWs because they don't look too "sporty" (tuner-ish) and they make practical daily drivers. I really wanted to get a 2002, but I would have spent my entire budget on the car. Going with the e21 I have money left over to do some work on it and make it the way I want it. I haven't done any real work on it yet, but it's been a great car. Put lots of miles on it this summer driving around the countryside, searching for curvy roads and trying to improve my driving. Already have some good memories with the car. Looking forward to making many more in the future.

  6. Amazing progress since I saw the car last night. I'm speachless.

Seriously though, that car needs to get back on the road and working right by summer. I'm hoping to have my beater together this weekend, and get the paint booth project wrapped up. Should be able to paint the bay within a week or two... :)

  7. It's hard to tell from the pics, but the crud in the intake looks similar to what I had (in other words, a lot).

I intend to drive my car in sub-freezing temperatures, and the previous owner had already bought all the hoses, so I kept the throttle body heaters. What a PITA! I put everyting together and took it apart again 3 times before I managed to get everything hooked up properly.

The P.O. also said not to fill the gas above half way because it will leak. Not looking forward to dealing with that...

  8. 272.gif Oh, and welcome!

    How do you really feel?

Hopefully this doesn't turn into a thread-jack, but judging from the fact that it's a 'vert and is way-low, I'm guessing performance is not the primary goal. So why not M50? 10% more power, has better gas mileage and (pulling numbers out of my ass...) it's only 72% more expensive and requires 107% more effort.
