  1. Looking for some miscellaneous parts for my '98 M3:

    Gray sport seat seat backs

    Cup holder ring

    antenna

    right front fender liner (coupe/convertible)

    center vent

    driver side side-skirt gasket

airbag (mine has a dented roundel)

Located in Madison, but will travel reasonable distance for reasonably priced parts.

    Thanks!

I ran mobil 1 0w40 in both of my e36's and neither blew up.

I run this in my e36 M3 and my e91 328.  It used to be a BMW approved oil, but BMW has since pulled all the non-BMW oils from their approved list.

Switching to this weight/manufacturer in my e91 cut my oil consumption from about a quart per 7000 miles (my change interval) to near zero.

  4. Yeah.  At the end, we got out of the habit of checking in with the dealer and we seldom check our home Vmail  messages (no one calls the home phone that we want to talk to!) and we ended up waiting closer to 8 weeks to actually get our car back.   They finally called my office and left a bit of a nasty message about wanting their rental back!  I'd we'd have known, we'd've been there the minute it was done.  Crappy Chevy rental.

  5. I just checked and my 2007 is under recall too; actually two recalls.  Not airbag, just burst-into-flame.

My wife's Honda had the airbag recall.  She got a crappy Chevy SUV for about three months and hated every minute.  I wonder what Zimbrick will give me for the BMW.

  6. Was sorry to see you didn't win (at least I thought I saw you didn't win).  A couple year's ago I entered some photos of my '96 328 convertible (black) with what I thought was a pretty cool contrasting background of native wild flowers at UW Arboretum.  No love for me either.

  7. I've owned 2 E36 verts and have diagnosed some problems.  Tops can be tricky - there are a lot of micro switches, any one of which could go bad.  There are also three motors and the processor which can give you trouble.

First, though, you should tackle the easy things - have you checked fuses?  My Bentley manual says that for your '97, fuses 7, 24, 27, 42, 43, and 49 - in the black box on the left side of the engine compartment have some involvement with the top.  Check them all.  Mostly they are small amperage 5-10A; however 49 is a 20A.

Assuming the fuses are correct, probably your next step is to see if the motors operate under power.  Probably this will require removal of the motors from the car.  On my 96 - which was the semi-auto top, I found removal of the tonneau and top motors to be not too bad, just a little futzy. Your 97 should have a fully auto top which means a motor in the first bow. Since you first had trouble putting the top down, that might be the first suspect since none of the other motors will be called for until that motor has done its job.  I now have a '98 which is the fully auto top, but it (knock on wood) has worked perfectly for the entire time I've owned it - so I've not had reason to take it apart.  I did for some reason look it up online and it really didn't seem to bad of a job.  Once out, you'll need a multi-tester and a power source to check for operation.

I've not heard (m)any instances of microswitches failing, short of physical damage, so if you get so far as finding the fuses are OK and the motors work it may be the processor and you might be best served going to the dealer for a diagnosis on that.

    Good luck!

  8. I've just discovered that the welds holding the forward mounting bracket for the battery tray on my new-to-me 98m3 convertible are all broken off.  For who knows how many miles the tray has been only supported in the rear and the forward bracket has worn a hole through the floor of the body pan - inch wide, quarter inch deep.  No rust whatsoever, but still a problem.

Anyone have a recommendation on a place in Madison  (or a mobile welder) that could tackle this?  This is a non visible interior weld job, but I'd like it done right.  I have fears of the bracket being mounted at the wrong angle and the tray not being able to be reinstalled.  Also, because of the location - trunk well, semi close to fuel filler neck, large battery cables, rubberized undercoating in fenderwell - it seems that someone with some subtle skill may be required.

    Thanks!
