Funny, I just created this thread 20 minutes ago. Should answer all of your questions.

Don't care if it's an N54 or not. Exterior color doesn't matter to me that much, but would like to stay away from red. Sedan or coupe is fine.
Color doesn't matter? How about Mary Kay pink, or metallic purple? LOL

I could've, but we were strapped for time and I had a cashiers check printed in that dealership's name. I mostly wanted it for the price, but not with all the problems.
I've had good luck with Chicago area cars, this was my first time going west. Schaumberg, Illinois is a pretty nice area, I would imagine that most people take care of their cars there. Back to the drawing board for me...
What exactly are you looking for? Do you want to stick with N54 2010 MYs? Color? X-drive? Coupe or sedan? Max miles? Spend?

+1 for negative personal experiences with Illinois cars. (Ol' Smokey the smoke gray X3) The guy that bought my last van was from rural/Peoria-ish Illinois and said "I live in Illinois and I always come to Wisconsin to buy cars".
LOL - I've actually had good experiences buying Illinois BMWs - both my blue and my black 335xi coupes came from Schaumberg, and both run great.
The black one had 53k miles, and now 178k four years later. Might be because they're 2011MY with the N55 engine. The blue one I bought with 65k now has 67k two months later. I'm saving that one for when my daughter takes over the black one.

Was it in Illinois? I've always had bad luck looking at cars in Illinois. You didn't mention tolls, so I'm guessing not...
Judging by the Craigslist URL, it looks like Minneapolis. Surely there are more 335xi sedans listed in the cities, so you could have optimized your trip by finding more listings in the area on autotrader or something. Minneapolis is a great market for finding used BMWs.

First, I'll admit I don't know much about transmissions, but wouldn't it be Far Far easier to find an old automatic tranny in a junkyard from a Sienna and put that in?

They cut the bumper out and used it as a spoiler
Are you sure? Spoiler looks too long compared to what they cut... But I guess it's possible... Actually ingenious if it really works.

I've got no issue diy'ing stuff but our hardwoods are 100+ years old so i'd like to not fuck them up. That and my August/September is packed between work and 4 weddings. One guy did get back text me after I sent him pictures. $3 per sq ft to refinish the floor and it's about 500sq/ft.
That's actually not a bad price.

It always seems to happen when you want something done you can't give your money away nor will people show up if you try to give them extra money
I'll take any extra money you have laying around...
Hardwood floors should be a DIY. You'll save a lot of money and learn a new trade. That's why I put my own tile floor in my basement. OK, it was a PITA, but I learned a trade and also learned why I don't do that trade for a living...

A flex head wrench is the key there.
Ya! I found that out later. Plus the universal size for that F... er.. what I meant to say - FINE E-torx - I just bought a set of ratcheting ones from Sears and they are very nice.

172k. I'm sure it's toast but I like taking stuff apart and i'm not out anything but an evenings work if it still doesn't work.
It is definitely fun taking stuff apart. Like when I changed the starter motor in my 335. What a PITA! I curse that one bolt in the back of the motor! Three inches from the firewall. WTF, BMW?!?! But I got it all back together and believe it or not, it works!

In 2004 they had adaptive cruise control, but it was $$$ option. Getting to be standard equip nowadays...
I'm almost 100% sure you'll be looking for a new tranny.
How many miles on it?

Finally found this in the boxes of stuff in my basement:
My grandfather made this for me when I was about 6-7 years old, because me and the neighborhood kids loved to play "war". He made me this and an AK-47 (which was short lived - broke it almost immediately sliding behind a fence trying to evade "the enemy").
One of those childhood memories that I'll never forget, so glad I found this after all these years!
Think of the news headlines and drama that would come from a 6-7 year old running between houses at dusk waving this at other kids as they ran around in this day and age...
Heck, back in my middle-school days (many many moons ago). I actually brought two guns to school for show and tell. Even showed the class how to load and aim, proper stance, etc. Shit, imagine doing that nowadays!

Why are the time stamps on our posts off by like 14 hours? Someone change the time zone without telling anyone?

At end of day on Wednesday, I already logged 36 hours. Salaried, means I will basically take the rest of the week off now.

No such thing as a stupid question!
It was the abriviation of the German word Entwicklungscode meaning Development Code. 'M' simply stands for motor. The new codes have just gone with the next letter of the alphabet.
At this rate it won't be long till we have 'E' chassis codes and nobody will know what anyone is to referring to anymore
Or if you go the Excel route, after z, you start with aa, ab.
I actually thought it was an alphabetic progression, with e being the fifth generation, just because the newer generation is f31 etc.
-
There, their, they're.
Learn how to use these correctly. Just because they sound the same, doesn't mean they are interchangeable!
-
Does anyone know what the "e" stands for? e90, e92, e30, etc etc. Maybe some Germany word meaning chassis?

Huge progress on my engine build In the last few months ive managed to clean 1 whole piston
Reference one of my favorite movies, Beyond the Law (and no, it's not because of Sheen). "Modest beginnings start with a single blow of a horn, man"

My brother bought this 1990(yes I Checked the vin) 325i for 500$ yesterday. Sport seats and all. Working top, and shit loads of maintenance. All he needed to do was replace driver side window 50$ later he has a daily. Even a 5 speed with lsd! Very worn though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Hey, if it's "fucktional" and goes point A to point B... and a BMW, $500 is a STEAL, imho.

More of a handgun person myself, although any type of shooting is fun
Yep, most of my guns are pistols. I have a CCW permit, and it's amazing how many places I go to that are posted for no weapons. But in contrast, one of my customers I go to is posted that they ENCOURAGE you to carry. I think this should apply to schools. Although there hasn't been a major school incident I can think of lately...

Remington 1187
Not giving it away, but it would be priced to sell.
I'm a Benelli fan, but if you like- if you create a one-page PDF flier with a pic, I can post it at my Sportsman's club near Green Bay. I shoot trap there every Wednesday... There's lots of guys there looking for guns. If you sell it, I can transport it too. I'm down in the Appleton/Menasha area regularly.

Did you try Carfax?
I guess if you can't find it, you can proclaim it as your own. Who's gonna know if it can't be looked up???
