  1. E46 330ZHP- Absolute blast to drive and all of the niceties of an E46 and only a few ponies short of E36 M3 Horsepower.  Can't really say I didn't like anything about driving it.  If you like driving an E46 you will like this.

Mini Cooper S-  The supercharged model is fun but the turbo model gives you a bit more.  The shifting is direct and the steering is like being in a go-kart on steroids!  The interior is roomier than you would expect.  I wasn't really impressed with the interior materials but I understand that it is meant to hit a cheaper price point.  Overall, it was a great drivers car and I would definitely recommend one.

Mustang V8-  Depends on the year.  the S197's have a much nicer interior than previous generations but still very plasticy.  Any of the generations are great to pound on and cheap to modify.  I would never go any older than the New Edge Mustangs which started in 1999.  Great as a second car but I wouldn't want to daily any Mustang.

Evo - I drove an Evo 9 MR and it was FAST.  It was stock and at the time was by far the quickest car I had ever driven.  It will plant you in the seat at the thought of dropping a gear and flooring it.  The ride was stiff and the interior was cheap, noisy and uncomfortable.  With that being said, I understand this car was made to go fast and that's what it does well.  Another one that I would own as a fun car but not daily.

Forester XT - Surprisingly quick.  I believe the one I drove was an 04 and I wasn't quite sure what I was looking at until I popped the hood for my inspection.  I did a little bit of research after that and I got a little giddy.  The interior is typical Subaru of the time and by that I mean it works... but it's not pretty.  I would definitely recommend somebody buy one of these that wants an AWD vehicle to daily.

The reason I prefer BMW over all of these is the interior quality is better, the ride quality is nicer while still being sporty.  The engine sounds gorgeous, and has power when you need it.  BMW never fails to put a smile on my face.

  2. I spent this past weekend at LSHQ doing some much needed work on Lola.  It was nice to dig in and get these parts out of my garage finally!

My list for the weekend was as follows:

    FK Silverline Coilovers

    Grill Surround

    Hood release

    Find coolant leak

    Test fit wheels

The coilovers were an easy install.  At there lowest they satisfy my need for the low low while not being overly harsh.  I did raise the front up a bit since this is daily driven and we are only in January right now.  My steering feels much more direct and gives a bit more confidence.  On excellent to good roads the ride is better than my worn out 150k mile m tech suspension and while on fair to poor roads the ride is a bit stiff.  I have never ridden in another e36 with coilovers so I don't have any comparison that way.  My brother-in-laws A6 on ST's is comparable to the ride the FK's deliver.  I paid $749 for them through ESE tuning and bought the coilover cup kit from Turner Motorsports that came with the front and rear mount reinforcements for $200.  Overall, I am extremely satisfied.

I don't have any pictures of the hood release install but that is a pain in the ass.  Come to find out one of my hood releases is frozen so a new one will be ordered soon.  No pictures of the wheel test fit either... you guy's will have to wait for that surprise!

Here are a few shots after the grill surround and grill were put in.

As for my coolant leak... The hose on the bottom of the resevoir was loose.  Easy fix compared to any other e36 coolant disasters.

  3. It's fiction.  I am not a frequent reader but this really sucked me in.  I was also able to get my wife to read it and she really enjoyed it as well.  There are little gems in the story that you will appreciate such as the main character works as a service advisor in a BMW garage and his dog's name is Enzo.

  4. One of my all time favorites is The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein.  It's a great story told through the eyes of a dog about his owner who is an aspiring racer and falls on hard times.  The story telling is compelling enough to keep non-auto people interested but has enough car speak in it to satisfy us gear heads.

Another favorite is On the Road by Jack Kerouac and if you haven't read this one yet you definitely need to!

  5. It is very simple. All you should need are hubcentric rings. I used e39 wheels on my e36 with them, and had no issues. They can be found on eBay for cheap, which is what I used. Outside diameter should be 74.1mm and inside is 72.56mm.

That part doesn't concern me its the offset that I'm worried about in the rear. Either way he's getting a call tomorrow and we'll see if I own them on Wednesday lol.
