  1. Im definately diggin the sound of a 540 mafia! Thanks for the welcome's everyone. Ill definately look forward to metting most of you at upcoming events this year and ill definately be at (from the looks of it) at least 4

To gain entry to the mafia, car must make a minimum of 100 db under load. So people know we are coming

  2. Well the damage report came back today and it was minimal! Turns out the linkage that went from the brake petal to the master cylinder rusted up (Damn Canadians) and that's what was causing the brakes to freeze up. He just took it apart and lubed it up and suggested I find a none rusted one from a junk yard eventually. I was expecting some huge problem and it was a under $100 fix so I pretty damn happy and I can leave from home on time.

  3.

I'm personally not a big fan of the M70, I suppose I've never been behind the wheel of one but you only get 20hp on the M60b40 and way worse mileage. Doesn't seem worth it to me but then again the torque figures are a bit different and it's kinda a unique engine so there is that as well. Definitely gets a down vote on reliability though, I've heard not good things about that engine on that point.

I would say e46 or e39 is a good choice. I love e39s, my dad had a 540i/6 growing up and it was a great car and I'm biased towards 5ers as well. On the 740i or iL note, you could get a really REALLY nice e38 for your price range since the depreciate so fast, people get super clean ones under for less then $4k. I've fallen in love with the M60b40 as well, its a great engine. As long they had their Nikasil cylinder liners were replaced under recall (I believe back in the day but what I understand most have been replaced) they are reliable. It has great power and you can easily bump it up to the same hp as the M70 with this chip, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Performance-chip-BMW-840-740-540-M60B40-engine-/320635918206 , if you are looking for that. My mileage has been a lot better then I expected, city is low as expected but combined with highway I get around 21 average, the catch is on the way down to school on two fill ups I got 26 and 25 (through the mountains!) on 100% highway driving so you could do pretty good with your mostly highway commute, maybe a little lower since my 540 is a little smaller. I think this engine is the best cruising engine, its got the power, decent mileage, and it's just a joy to drive. From what I hear around here it seems most BMW drivers get low to mid 20s so you'll be right in the average. Some food for thought.

  4. I am just north of Milwaukee by about 40 miles (only about 15 from Zach), but my car is no where near ready to have an exhaust put on. It currently has the engine and tranny removed and half of the engine is apart with more to do. I like the sticker idea though, definitely necessary.
Well we can bring your exhaust over and cut it up just to get it done or you can come for the party I'm volunteering someone to have. My family friends live 45 mins north of Milwaukee so we can make this work quite well.
Can my bastard 340i join? And yeah I think this will only fit a late model E39 or any one with the 4-1 manifolds.
WIbimmer v8.... Something. I don't know I'm sure we can come up with something catchy, as long as there is a sticker.
  5. Someone in the 540 clan should really think about buying mine. It was badass. https://m.flickr.com/#/photos/121188167@N08/15508368719/
Im ballin on a broke ass college kid budget and my 540 is a e34, probably won't bolt right in.
I plan on doing a very similar exhaust setup once I get everything done and put back together.
Your in Milwaukee too, might as well do all the 540 gangs exhaust done this winter. On a second note, WIbimmer 540 gang stickers. A necessity.
  6. I'm like the bastard child of the 540 clan.  Like Jon Snow, but a total bitch.

I'm sure we could make an exception but I'd have to consult Dom. On the over on Lake Michigan part, I will more likely then not head over to Milwaukee area for a visit to some family friends (Chris, Aaron Anding wants us to visit) maybe we could work something out where when I'm over there there we can do it that weekend and then Chris could could just be there because party, then have a party. My friends are flexible so we could plan something and get all the stars to align just right.

  7. .As far as the dual exhaust option, it would require cutting/modifying the spare tire tub, as there is no room for a pipe on the passenger side. I would stay away from that personally.

Or do dual pipes side by side like my 540  also, another person to join our 540 gang when we go to meets Dom!

I really need to do my exhaust too, I'm just cutting out my cats and stock resonator and putting a magnaflow resonator on. If you want Zach, we could team up and knock both of our cars out when I'm home in a week.

  8. AAA ftw, why wouldn't they tow it. Just don't try to have them pick it from a repair shop, huge hassle, just get out to the road in front and say it quit there. Tell them it is rwd so they don't send just a front lift truck. You should request a flatbed truck. Sent from my potato phone

I'm trying to get it towed to a specific shop but I think it will work out.

Also small update, car is going to this new shop I found. Guy is a grad from The Citadel (my college), he is a great guy, and him and his partner have 60 years of BMW experience. They had a spot open Thursday so hopefully they can get it done before the weekend.

  9. I'm not sure if they are compatible but I have a bunch of e39 brake parts of you need anything.

I'm not sure if they do either but I'm in South Carolina right now for school and I'm trying to drive home in a week. Thank you for the offer! Maybe we can work something out though.

  10. I was thinking today and last night and I guess I have realized the brake petal getting increasing harder. It would make sense that pressure in the system is constantly building up and then finally causing the brakes to stop relaxing. Another thing is the mileage on car, when I replaced the old calipers they were literally falling apart from rust (I broke one of the bleeder screw clear off) so there could be easily be rust in the system messing stuff up. Of course being a poor college kid I had to go with the quick fix but that never works out and here I am. For me to be able to get it to a shop, do you think I could open one of the bleeder screws to release some pressure from the system, possibly relaxing the calipers for enough time to get me to a shop. My car is not in a position so do any sort of work as of right now so doing a full bleed or trying to look/work on something is completely out of the question.

  11. Bad news everyone, problems have come up again and you guessed it....their with the brakes. So I was going to drive over to my grandparents place for the day and when I pressed in the brake to stop the car from rolling the brakes froze up pretty much exactly as they did before I replaced all the calipers. I haven't noticed any significant problems with the brakes before today. For all I know everything else in the brake system needs to be replaced but I wanted a second opinion so what do you guys think?

  12. Probably still suspension bits that need replacement, but awesome!

That is true, I'm going to start saving for those so I can get it done. Probably just have the shop that did my drive shaft stuff do it because you have to have an engine hoist and I've never done it before. Unless we can possibly do it when I'm home but $$$

Again, when you are ready to trade cars. You know where to find me

I don't think I could fit all my crap for school in a E30 for the drive down here. What do you get on the highway with a boosted M20?

Also I've run into a slight paint problem. When she was sitting around for such a long time the sun and probably snap from the trees started bubbling the clear coat a bit. Here are a couple example pics.

There are probably around 6 on the hood and one on the roof. I was thinking about trying to wet sand it with 2000 grit but would that leave it looking terrible? I've never dealt with anything like this so I don't know how to get the best result. Any suggestion?

  13. Finally got the car rolling last night! I threw on the back calipers and bled the brakes. Everything seemed to be in working order so I drove her back to school. I can't tell if the problems are completely fixed, there are is some noises the car still makes but they were probably there before and I'm not used to them. Maybe the new parts just need to be broken in a little, who knows. I can look into it some more this winter when I have time and money. At least I have my baby back for now at least.

  14. I got a little done on my car this week, I had dropped her off at a shop last Sunday to get the drive shaft work done. Picked her up this Wednesday and the guy who did the work told me the brakes had seized up bad. I somehow got her back to my grandparents place (brakes a smoking) and proceeded to order new calipers for the front. I started on the job last night, got the calipers off easy but the rotors and mounting bracket nuts would not budge. 3c158157e4636a65c3a2bf3849b35f4b.jpg7c36db4a07b32a95aac70b443b88e306.jpg

So I slept on it and picked up a blow torch this morning and gave it another go but still got no where. I decided to just try putting on the new calipers and just see what happens.

I got the new calipers on and started to bleed the brakes and the bleeder screw on the rear passenger caliper decided to break clear off. Looks like I get to replace those one too. Maybe I can get it done next weekend but you never know. At least I finally got a chance to give her a good washing.
