Found this sitting at the garage I was picking my car up from. Pictures don't even do it justice, its so pretty. Apparently a local collector held on to this car for ten years and only put 2k miles on it. As someone that badly wants an E46 M3 right now, I'm sad I can't afford this.

Bi-xenons are an easy swap but require coding which is easier than it sounds with the right software and hardware. Great looking car! The big question is... have you tried to do an awd burnout yet?
I have tried this and sadly it does not work. Not even in the wet, just too much grip.

The side and rear are sexy though, I would bet the front will get toned down some before release

I hear this is an SMG E46, how's that treating you? I want to be in the market later this year and am undecided on manual vs SMG.

So I've got an update; After this discussion I did some more research and decided you guys are probably right about E90 pricing. I was pretty bummed for a few days because I think that's just too much of a commitment with some things going on at work, but then something interesting happened.
The guy I mentioned above with the new E46 M3. Something kind of hit a spot in me and I did a complete switch into wanting to get one of those, and that's where I am now. The math just sort of works out, its a crazy fun car and way faster than what I have now, but for a lot less than the E90. This means I can probably get one by the end of this year if things go right (maybe even sooner), instead of end of next year.
Long story short, I am actively looking for a new place to move into (wife's only limitation on me getting the M3 is that she gets a dog, which requires a move) and am doing damn near constant research on what I need to know about E46's.
One important aspect would be the gearbox...I know how you guys feel about manuals, but what is the SMG actually like? For someone in my position it sounds pretty good if I'm honest, and they go for considerably less than manuals.

Hi E90 friend! Welcome
-
It had an awkward vibration around 70 the day I brought it home, which then moved to around 80 and eventually to 90. Not a wobble, just an odd shake sort of thing which had me a little worried because this is only my second car and the first with aftermarket wheels and tires, so I have no idea if that's normal or not. But that has since disappeared entirely so I completely love them.
I got to take them out to a couple cruises recently and they are SO MUCH stickier and firmer than the old run-flats. One bad thing happened though, I got a couple of chips on the inside of 2 spokes, like a rock or something got into the wheels and got bounced around while driving. I was pretty bummed about that because the wheels were practically brand new before that and I've been extremely paranoid about curbing them, but I guess shit happens and I'll just live with it.
I also finally threw on some new chrome trim on the nose. I had been considering blacking everything out, but the chrome looks nice with this color so I'm going to own it.

On another note, a local cruising buddy that is into BMW's just traded in his E46 325xi for an E46 M3... Suddenly I feel a stronger urge to get one.

This thread pushes the argument for a 135i over an M3 for me. Super cool build

Then buy a daily to practice with. The best way to learn is neccesity!
Im not in a position to test drive one before buying it and I already have a daily.
-
Yeah I get the principle of it, but I never had anyone that would lend me a car to practice on. And I was never in a position to buy a beater to practice with lol
-
I should be able to make it to this one, what time do you guys usually meet up in Madison? I'm coming from LaCrosse so I'll have to get up early.
-
I'm in La Crosse by the way, not Neenah. But I'll pm it to you and if you do ever find yourself way over here then it's on
This is all a great help

My E90 is a 330 not the 335, so its just a slightly faster N52. The 135i would be loads faster from what I read, but I guess that isn't really the point.
What I want is something I can comfortable take to cruises, meets, and the occasional track day, that isn't my daily, and can keep up with some of the more impressive cars there. The E9x seems like the perfect blend of that, but I haven't driven any of these so I 100% agree with you that I should do that before I make a decision either way.
On that note, I really appreciate the offer and would love to check the car out, but there is a problem with me test driving it...
I never had a chance to learn manuals (stop laughing), and that car is not the right place to do it. I have a friend with a manual 328xi in Madison that is supposed to teach me, but he keeps ditching me when its time to do it. We could still meet up when you're in the area and go have lunch/dinner or something if you're ever in the area. Or I'm sure we'll see each other at one of the meets this year and I'll come ask you a million questions then. But yeah, one thing at a time. Good thing I'm not in a hurry.

Well my thought was that when the next generation comes out that the previous ones will go down in price some.
But if you guys are right and they don't drop much more, and assuming I can't make up the difference, would I be better off getting an E46 M3 instead, or something like a 135i? I guess I'm not really sure, I want the V8.
-
Awesome, that's what I was looking for! I saw your M3 at the cruise last october and loved it, its pretty much exactly what I want.
I am willing to wait for the perfect one, but the price for those is still higher than I expected to be honest. That said, I want it to be perfect and honestly I would want to travel to go get it, the idea of driving home in my brand new M3 sends tingles up my spine.
I really REALLY need to get serious about making sure this will happen next year. I need to get a house first to have a place to keep it, and then its time to save up. I think financially I can do it and I expect that they will depreciate a bit more in the next year and a half anyway, leaving more money for repairs and upkeep.
But what is a dream worth anyway. I've been hanging out with some friends that have an AMG V8 and an SRT8, and the sound and the power is just intoxicating. But the whole time I keep thinking, I want the better one. Give me the M3.
-
Yeah that's what I'm gathering and willing to wait out. When I go to buy one it will have to be the perfect one, because I will probably end up keeping it a VERY long time.
Even the rod bearing issue seems to be an issue of neglect more so than faulty engineering. -
Ha thanks, I figure I can pretend to be an adult with the sedan, but we all know better.
I hadn't heard of that issue before, makes for interesting reading.
-
Naw, I was actually going to ask you guys earlier but I ran out of lunch time.
I will almost certainly be in the market for an E90 M3 late next year, and am kind of obsessed with it. Does anyone have any advice for me on what to look for and where? Common issues, pricing, etc? They will go down some before I get to go after one, but I'm going to take my time and buy the right one when I finally can.
Its literally my dream car so I'm really excited, and I know there are at least two on here
-
I couldn't make it I'll try to catch the next one
-
I mean, I've met several of you before and this never came up. It's just a sticker lol
-
I guess the point is I'm one of you guys not one if those guys. My heart is blue and white
-
Yeah, I totally get what you guys are saying. And honestly, I agree. This is an interesting point of discussion (and maybe this isn't the place for it), but I associate myself with BMW clubs a lot more than WCEC. I have not even been to a show of theirs yet. Alex is a good friend of mine, and it isn't just because of cars. Certainly not because he runs a car club.
In my opinion, WCEC is what happens when the car culture appeals to people of an age where cars can not financially be a proper hobby for them. Mix in the internet and a bunch of ignorant people, and you get a room full of problems and arguments.
That being said, Alex has a vision that goes beyond that. It should be a place where car enthusiasts can gather and discuss things, its just filled with idiots at times. But the vision is there, I agree with it, and as his friend I support him in trying to make it happen.
I am a proud BMW owner/driver first and a LONG time BMW fan way before I met him or any of you. The sticker doesn't make those people actual enthusiasts, and it certainly doesn't automatically make me a millennial douchebag.

Is that a WCEC sticker on the back window?
Yeah, Alex is a good friend of mine and I want to support his vision for the club. I know some around here aren't fans, and that's fine.
