  1. The one on the side of the radiator is for the aux electric fan in front of the radiator and A/C condenser.  Only about 30$ for one.

Okay, thanks. So the one for my temperature gauge is actually on the engine? If my temp. stayed at operating temp the whole time, should I be safe with regards to an overheat or is it just too hard to say?

  2. Got the hood open!

The radiator expansion tank is completely busted, which now makes me think that my "hoping" the smoke/steam was washer fluid may have been an overheated engine after all :(. Which also means I'm a freaking idiot for thinking I could drive it off the freeway lol. I guess I was frantic.

The radiator itself looks fine from the angle I can see it... the upper and lower hose connections look good and the aluminum "fins?" themselves don't have any coolant on them. The fan has some broken fins, so i'm not sure if that force pushed hard into the water pump. As you guys guessed, the core support/ radiator mount definitely need replaced. I'm not entirely sure about the bumper... it looks fine but where it mounts on the passenger side would probably need welded or something.

Also, related to Earl's picture earlier, I think the fender mount is bent at the very end of the bar... not sure how fixable that is. It's not looking good guys :(

Anybody have an extra expansion tank so that when I get a lot of the front pieces off I can at least start it up and see how it does, or is that a lost cause? As you can tell, I'm not exactly sure what the best "approach" is in this situation, and I don't want to waste too much money at a mechanic if I'm just going car shopping this weekend.

Edit: Which temperature sensor sends information to the cluster gauge? I know there is a sensor on the passenger side of the radiator... that one is completely busted... but now I'm wondering if the engine temp is fed from a different sensor. Although the expansion tank was totally destroyed, the car never left 12 o'clock temperature...

  3. You might not want the fenders. We rolled them. With a hammer. And a forklift. So. Yep. Maybe some parts are salvageable. But most certainly not the areas we hit with a hammer. Or. A huge forklift.

Earl more or less explained rolling fenders... how does a forklift work into that process?

  4. I'm wondering if my car wasn't lowered (thanks a lot Earl! :) ) if the damage would have come into the bumper instead of the headlight... although maybe it's better this way? You guys are all awesome. Unfortunately I don't have time to get in and take a look at it until Sunday :(. Any of you guys in the Milwaukee area interested in helping with an assessment in trade for some beer & pizza :)?

  5. thanks for the replies guys. I'll be thinking about what to do with it over the next couple of days. It'd be a shame to junk it, since it still runs like I didn't rear end somebody!!! Any recommendation on how to get the hood open? The latch is stuck. Should I just take a crowbar to it since the hood is done anyways?

Does anybody know if stewcrew has a parts car?

  6. The hardest repair will be where the fender mounts if it is bent.

You can see it in this pic

Thanks for the pic, Earl!  Not really sure if those guys are bent or not... it'll be close and I doubt they totally survived. Are you talking about the top bar or the circular part with 4 studs in it?

  7. That is a bummer. glad it wasn't more serious and that you presumably aren't injured (i didnt see a "need front teeth" thread in the WTB section).

If you were driving drunk/texting/roadknob/sleeping/playing candy crush then I hope you learned your lesson.

How much would you have tried to sell the car for when it had straighter body panels?

prepare yourself for a second potential jimmy rustler:

If it were me, I would use the opportunity to get another car that isnt green.

Ha, not a fan of green? And no to all of your situations, thankfully... but a lesson was learned none-the-less.

I wasn't really interested in selling, but had what i 'hoped' the car was worth :P. The latch on the hood is obviously jammed, so I haven't gotten the hood up to assess damage. Hoping the radiator isn't cracked or anything.

  8. More info:

rear ended someone (obviously). Car is still driveable, but I had to pull some metal up off the tire. Engine temperature gauge read operating the whole time I attempted to drive it, but I started to see smoke and my "check coolant" indicator came off so I pulled it over for a tow. The smoke went away very quickly, so I think it was the windshield washer fluid splashed onto the engine... but that's just wishful thinking, not entirely sure. Anybody dealt with something like this? I love this car :(

  9. Luckily I do have a low profile jack, but because of that the range isn't the best. Can I get some extra range out of the jack by jacking up, for example, the front, putting on stands... then place the floor jack on some pieces of wood and jacking it farther, adjusting the jack stands again.

Also, never jacked up the rear on my car. Should I put the floor jack under the rear differential?

  10. Hey jc,

I tried working with those jacks today, and it was the first time the car almost fell :( Luckily I wasn't under it, since I was in the process of jacking it up... is there a strategy around putting the car on 4 jacks? We were doing my girlfriend's mazda, so maybe we just didn't have the jacks in a good place -- when you have the first jacks in place and you start jacking up the other side, what stops the car from making the other jacks start to tilt?

I think part of it may be us not having the jacks in the right place, so maybe when I do it on my e36 and have them in the designated spots, it won't be as much an issue.

  11. It's perfectly fine to jack it up and run it.  Just take every safety step you can to make sure it won't come down.  I usually put all four wheels in the air on jack stands because I am a bit paranoid but it is alright to put 2 jack stands in the back and chock the front wheels.  I usually put the stands under the LCA's in back.

The $15 stethoscope works just fine for this job and you just move it around on the case until you think you have pinpointed your noise.  I always listened without it first then with and compared noises.  You may not need anyone pushing the pedal unless it is at a certain rpm/mph.  Once you put it in gear the wheels will spin.

You don't need to apply gas in 1st to stop it from dying? I guess that makes sense since it has no car to push... never thought of that.

I only have 2 jack stands... would it be it worth it to grab 2 more for this, you think? For some reason I picture 4 stands as less safe than 2 :P Do I chock both sides of the front wheels to be safest? Never had to jack up the rear, and when doing the front I always had E-brake and in gear so chocking the back I never second guessed.

Is there a reason you use the control arms instead of the sides under the jack points?

  12. I LOVE my stethoscope!  When I was in a shop that thing was magic!  I got teased ever time I pulled it out but it worked and that shut everyone up lol.

Think it'd help in this case? Do I buy one of the mechanic ones for like $15 then point it against transmission while someone is pushing gas pedal?

Is it safe to run back wheels in 1st/2nd while it's up on jack stands?

  13. a zf for your car can be had for around 200 + fluids +clutch +mount + center support bearing +time you can do it in your driveway in a day so song as you have some basic hand tools and an external torques set. Cracking open and rebuilding a zf is not the hardest thing but its tinkery and the parts cost mucho dollars plus the housing tends to wear maybe your lucky and it's the center support bearing or a u joint on the prop shaft any vibration when you give her full bean? i would say put it up on some jack stands and see if you can get it to make the sound in the air then set the cruse or find a friend and pinpoint the issue

Luckily I do currently have the money and time to repair if I want to, the question is whether or not it's going to be worth it. I've already sunk some money into it and I don't know how much more I want to put in :(. But I Love this car, so I'll probably go for it.

Is it safe to put it on jack stands and run the car? I've never done that, tbh....

By the way, noticed this morning that the sound is WORST in reverse. Also, in reverse it doesn't matter if I start to press the gas pedal -- the sound doesn't go away like it does in other gears.

    Thanks for all the help!
