  1. Sounds like a great combination...plus unlike traditional AX you're not standing out in a parking lot getting baked the whole day. Is it just the basic track or are there cones set up to make you slalom through the straights, etc.

  2. High speed autocross (HSAX?) looks like fun. But HSAX and HPDE events are different animals which will explain some of the cost difference. Figure 10-20 cars out on Blackhawk at once in your run group all out on the track at the same time with designated passing zones (and pass with point rules) varying by the level of experience in your group. Four 20 minute sessions of track time for your group (80 minutes of seat time) plus classroom sessions that teach you how to drive in this type of situation as well as details on proper lines, braking, etc. Go to Road America and run groups increase in size, the run sessions are longer, the number of sessions increase, and the classroom sessions are more detailed. Organizations such as GT Track Days, the MW Fox Body folks, MVP Track Time also offer good programs and will offer cheaper rates for Road America than the BMW, Porsche, Audi events but with less classroom instruction and typically cheaper rates if you reserve in advance. All of this is fun and the more different experiences you can get the better.

  3. I've been a member since 2004. My main involvement has been in their DE programs at Road America and Blackhawk. Very well run events with a focus on skill development and safety as you move up through the run groups. Good way to develop a skill set before moving on to events that are just open track days. The events draw a diverse mix of cars and you will see the same coordinators running Road America events for other organizations. Beyond the driving I've met a bunch of fascinating people who know a lot and care about the brand and some who more just enjoy hanging out. Come to some track events this season and see for yourself.

  4. That's what I have noticed. Because more people than I'd expect come up to me and remember the business. Someone just recently donated a car to the local high school and he mentioned the business to one of the students who is a friend of mine.

Yes! You got his name. Denis. We were in Bimmer immer and Roundel :) I have the Bimemr immer saved. But I don't think I have the roundel.

I hate the picture on the front for the article. Because I was on my way to school so I look grumpy.

If you went to the shop in 2007. Then you were taken care of by scott and corrina. (they live in texas now, and scott works at a BMW dealership as a mechanic)

Yes. BMW still remains in the wisniewski family's blood! I personally will always own a european car. Scott has told me that he will always have at least 1 bmw between him and corrina.

Right, it was Scott and Corrina. For a while there was also a guy helping out that had worked with Denis down in Texas. Good to hear that everyone is doing well.

  5. Welcome. Alpine was a well known independent shop and they helped me to sort out my e30 when I picked it up in 2007. I think I remember reading a story about your dad (Denis?), you, and the project car in the local Badger Bimmer publication (Immer) that was later picked up by Roundel the national BMWCCA publication. Glad to hear that BMW remains in the blood.

  6. Ryan, check over in the NASIOC forums, especially the midwest regional subforum. More likely to find a wrx in the area that was owned by an enthusiast and taken care of instead of one that has been beat to death. Also a good way to get a sense of the issues to watch out for.

$6k is probably low though, 2002s are still pulling in $8-9k if in good shape:

  7. Thanks for the replies.

I've got a track day coming up on Monday and the car is running fine so I won't play with any wiring this weekend. Just my luck and things would go south.

It looks like there is a sleeve but maybe whatever tabs needed to be bent to hold things in place aren't.

Also found two sets of antenna cables and power wires running into the trunk. Neither one works to raise the antenna when all hooked up but could be the power antenna or the hook up to the head unit. I do get radio reception in the city without the antenna up but lose it a few miles out. Ipod hookup works so not that big a deal.

  8. Somewhere in the history of the e30 a PO installed an aftermarket stereo with removable face plate. Some quirky wiring issues such as hit the defrost switch when the unit is on and it blows a fuse and the unit and OEM power antenna aren't talking to each other. I can live with these.

The more pressing issue is that on hard braking and acceleration the head unit slips out of the dash on the driver's side by about 1/2 -3/4 inch. I push it back in and all is good but it would be better if it didn't move.

Any recommendations for a Milwaukee area install shop that could address this issue for cheap or any DIY suggestions short of shimming it into the dash would be appreciated!

  9. I posted this on R3VLimited but maybe folks here would know who owns these. Twice now I have been working in my garage on the e30, heard a familiar sound, looked up and saw an e30 M3 driving down the street. On Sunday it was an orange M3, and a few weeks ago a black one. Both looked to be in great shape. Never seen the cars parked in the neighborhood, so anyone here been cruising down West Crawford Drive in New Berlin recently? If so nice rides!

  10. Registration is $210 for the event. You'll also need a closed face SNELL SA 2000 or newer helmet. Although rare, offtrack incidents can happen so it's a good idea to also get some track insurance to cover damage to your car. I use Lockton Infinity for the e30 (you set the value for your car and mods) and this runs me about $90 for the day.

Total sounds steep if you've never done this before but figure that the $300 total works out to $3/minute of track time. Autocross at Miller Park factors out to about $6+/minute with a lot of down time. Different addictions and both are a blast.

  11. Badger Bimmers is running a drivers school at Blackhawk Farms in South Beloit, IL on June 10. Fun track and a nice place to start if you've never done a High Performance Drivers Education event before. Each run group gets four 25 minute track sessions. Instructors are assigned for the novice group and also typically for those in the intermediate group. Consistently a well run event. For info go to http://www.badgerbimmers.org/main/index.shtml

    Warning, this is addicting :D
