  1. Thanks all.  I did buy a set of extractor sockets.  Ripped the teeth right off the bolt.  That f-er is really on there.

YoungCr - My brother has a truck that I could come pick it up.  I'm just outside Verona so pretty close to you.  Would love to take you up on your offer to borrow it.  Would you need it back anytime soon?  Not sure if I'll be able to get it all done this weekend or not since I've never done it before.  Shoot me a PM if that works.

If anyone else is willing to coach me through it I certainly wouldn't turn you down :)

  2. Hi all,

Anyone in Madison have experience and a hoist to remove an m20 engine?  I'm in the middle of a 5 speed swap.  I was down to one of the last bolts on the transmission, the hard top one, and it stripped.  F&^K of course....  Tried extraction sockets and it just broke more teeth off the bolt.  Trying to JB weld a socket on it tonight but I highly doubt that'll work.  Only option now is to pull the engine to cut the bolt out.

Is there anyone in Madison with an engine hoist that'd be willing to lend/help for cash, beer, anything ?! :)  Day or night I'd make time.  I've pretty much disconnected everything already.  Just need to do the various hoses and wires, etc, which I'd try to do all ahead of time.  Never removed an engine but doesn't seem terribly hard.  Would love a second set of eyes that's done it before.  Thanks much.

  3. Hi all,
I bought a set of clutch pedals for a 5 speed swap.

    1.  It has part of the lines that I need but they cut hoses.  Can I patch in new hoses with the existing connection parts?

    2.  The shifter is pictured.  Transmission is from a 87 325e.  What mounting plate do I need to buy to attach to the car.  Help with a part number would be great.  Seems like there are two versions?

    Thanks!  Andrew

  4. Hi all,
I'm going to do a 5 speed swap in my 1991 325i. Trans has the dual mass flywheel. I prefer the smoothness of the dual mass as I don't track or drive hard so don't need the single mass. Won't ever turbo the car. Just a convertible cruiser.

I need a new clutch and pressure plate. Sachs FX heavy duty clutch and plate new on ebay is $125. Again, don't need anything fancy, just need it to work. So, don't want to spend a ton.

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/SACHS-FX-HEA...NRw5X2&vxp=mtr

Will that work for dual mass? I can't seem to find anything that is specific for dual mass flywheel. When I look at PelicanParts I only see ones that are for the single mass.

    Thanks for the help,
    Andrew

Buy the 15x8 et25 and use 3mm spacers up front. Done.

Got it.  The 3mm spacer actually subtracts the offset right?  So, it's et22 after the spacer.  Shouldnt I get a 5mm spacer then to bring it back to et20?  Lastly, the center bore is 73.1 where bmw is 57.1.  if i get a hubcentric spacer do I still need to get rings to fill the gap.

    I think I've reached my 20 questions limit :)

more pics here, but no specifics on the wheel size of offset =)

If you haven't, look here. (link?)

Google it. The offset is a measurement between the center of the wheel, width-wise, and the wheel mounting surface, in millimeters. Lower = more poke, higher = more sunk. Check out the fitment thread(s) on r3v and pick whatever floats your dingy.

ok, thanks guys for putting up with me, starting to get it.  So higher number = more sunk.  So, wouldnt the 15x8" et25 with the 205/50 R15 tire fit under the fender better than the et 20 with the same size tire?  More sunk into the car should have less chance of rubbing, correct? (but now i have to worry about clearing the caliper or strut?)  I would think pushing the rim out towards the exterior of the fender with a lower offset would lead to rubbing?  Is 5mm really enough difference that'll look stupid too sunk in the fender?

Just seems like there's never a set answer on certain combinations.  Ugh......might just have to buy and try.  Seems rolling the fender is easier than caliper mods if they dont fit.  leaning towards the 15x8" et25.

  7. Thanks Andy.  I like 15"s  think they fit the car just right.  205/55 looks like a good amount of sidewall too without being too big.  You look lowered, are you?

Yeah, it's the width of the rim I'm looking at (8") and then the different offsets that I don't really understand what that all means and what the limits are of what can or can't fit.  Thats what i need help with.

For those who dont see above this is what I'm trying to figure out if they fit, two choices I like:

    15x8" et20 with a 205/50 R15 tire or

    15x8" et25 same size tire

  8. well, didn't get that guy to a price I liked so moving on from the Craigslist rims.  Didn't love the white on them so unless the price was too good to be true I'm looking new.  Two other wheels I like have the following sizes:

    15x8" et20 would like to run with a 205/50 R15 tire   or

15x8" et25 would run same size tire.  I like this wheel better but can't confirm anywhere if the offset would work.

Any help is again greatly appreciated!

to me if you have to choose a specific, undersized tire which has worse performance than stock sizes to make a wheel fit, than the wheel doesn't fit.  performance here being grip, ride quality, and wheel protection. 195/40 = destroyed wheel if you hit a pothole. i think wheels should look good and i definitely like plus-sized stuff, but tires are just as important. earl, i'm not arguing this toward you, just the OP, so you can ignore me, and continue on with your stance-stance revolution.

Thanks, yes I'd agree 195/40 would be pushing the limit of what I'd feel comfortable with.  I do like a little stretch in a tire, not a ton.  I think  205/45 tires should be a good compromise to still have some "meat on the bone"

I am assuming you have found the great wheel and tire fitment thread on r3v, thats your one stop shop on what combos fit.

    Hi Snap,

I asked on there but haven't heard.  I'm sure people are sick of responding to the same questions.  Guess my question is will the craigslist ones I posted fit without rubbing or spacers?  16x8" et25 on 205/45  If those don't fit then I'll probably stick to a 16"x 7" or 7.5" rim if that's what people are recommending for just general street driving on a 16" rim

  11. Here are some pics of the car.  Not the best, but best I found on my phone.  This will give you sense of the ride height.  Front is too low, I'm going to raise about 3/8" in the spring.  I don't track or do anything aggressive with the car.  Just cruise around on nice days.  I just want a classic rim like the one pictured with a little lip to it.  Not looking to spend a lot as this isn't my daily driver and the car itself isn't worth BBS rims ;)   I was looking at the ESM's online.

These seem OK too on craigslist.  They are 16x8" et25 on 205/45 tires https://rockford.craigslist.org/wto/5392345103.html  prices seems about right.  I was under the impression they wouldn't fit without rubbing?  I can't figure out all this offset stuff.

  12. Hi all,

I have a 1991 325i convertible, it's lowered pretty far on the crappy JOM coil overs. (they work for me, just a weekend cruiser)  This spring I'm looking to upgrade my stock rims from 14" basket weaves to some aftermarket 15 or 16 inch rims.  I was looking into the STR basket weave type rims you see on ebay.  I don't need anything fancy for this car, I just want to upgrade looks a bit.  R3v has just too much info. and too many combinations to figure anything out.

Curious to what you other e30 guys like on your lowered cars for sizes / offsets.  I really don't want to mess with spacers and fender rolling so was hoping to see what you all thought works well.

    Thanks, Andrew

  13. Nice de-badged 1'er has been in the parking lot where I'm staying here in Madison. Haven't seen the owner yet.

Ha, nice that's me!  Car's dirty and needs an updated wax.  I can't quite figure out where that picture was taken or where I was at, at the time.  Where was it?

  14. Hi all, quick update.  Snap looked and tested my AFM.  did show signs of dead spots.  So, since i didn't have a new one I just put it back in and also re-swapped out the OEM wires and plugs back to the newer performance ones / bosch plugs.  So, all the same stuff.

I was going to meet John Thursday in Cottage Grove to look things over.  I wanted to make sure I could make it that whole way from the westside so I took the car out Wednesday night to my wife's Happy hour just to make sure it woudn't die.  It sputtered for about 2 mins then settled down.  I hit a detour on my way which made me have to go 70mph on 151.  Took me about 30 mins to get around town.  Car ran great, no issues.  Let it cool down while we ate for several hours.  Fired it back up on the way home.  No sputtering at all.

So, Thursday I decide to try taking it to work along the Beltline.  Fired it up, no issues.  Drove around all day Thursday and took to work again today.  I'll probably jynx myself for typing this, knock on wood, but no issues.  Nothing different that i did.  So, no idea but I'll take it for now!  I'm not touching anything :)  Actually have a few drips i have to stop, but at least I feel I hopefully wont break down.

Just wanted to say thanks again for everyone's help.  I definitely learned a lot about this engine through all this.

    Andrew

  15. Thanks guys, you all rock for offering to help like this.

I've tried unplugging the AFM and the car just stalled and died so I'm not sure it can run without that plugged in, i don't think so.

I'm going to try cleaning the AFM tonight and moving the track slightly on the electronic sensor like this guy does.  I opened it up and I definitely have two distinguishable spots of wear along the track.

    http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=247831

I don't totally understand how the AFM works but this might be it.  The thing I don't understand is does that arm constantly move along the senor pad, or does it only adjust while pressing the throttle?  If it's the later I don't think that'd be my issue because the car sputters even when in idle.  However, if that arm is constantly moving based the other sensor in the air box it'd make sense for the car to sputter when it hits the dead spots along the track.

Either way, I'll report back tonight!
