  1. I wish I had a great recommendation for you but my last conversation with an alignment shop went something like this:

me: "Do you have time to get my car in for a 2-wheel alignment today?"

shop: "Oh sure!, not a problem, our 4-wheel alignment runs $190"

me: "The only component on my car with any adjustability is the front toe. I just replaced my steering rack and just need the toe set again"

shop: " what kind of car?"

    (here we go)

    me: "91 BMW 325i "

shop: "Oh yeah, we cant do an alignment on those, we dont have the special BMW tool for that one, but theres a shop in Waukesha that does"

me:"Ha! well why dont I bring you my "special bmw tool" (rubber handled crescent wrench) so you can do it"

shop:" Sir, you dont understand, it requires a special bmw tool"

    ........

I ended up doing it myself. Here in the midwest I get the feeling that most parts stores and shops that ask me what kind of car I have would end up asking me "what kind of Chevy is that?"

  2. Hey, Brian... Great chatting with you yesterday and great driving... You were looking very strong out there...

So guys, that was me in #350 and as best as I can piece together from what I remember and what my instructor told me, here's what happened:

I was coming out of T5 and had been on the bronze 318 for the whole lap. Driving really well all day, and feeling very confident (insert ominous music here).

He gave me the point coming out of T5 and I started to go around him. And here's where the problems began: he not only lifted to let me by, but also tapped the brakes. So all of a sudden I'm coming up on him *way* faster than I anticipated, but I'm also still accelerating out of the turn. So to avoid plowing into his back left corner, I let off the gas and tap my brakes, shifting the weight off the rear wheels. I remember feeling the back end get very light, a quick attempt at correction, and, well, you can see what happens next. :)

In retrospect, as a novice driver (this was my 2nd DE) I probably shouldn't have been trying to pass coming out of a turn, but in my defense, it was a designated passing zone that I had passed in before that day AND I wasn't expecting him to tap the brakes. :)

All in all, it was a great day, met some great folks, and got some great driving in for my first 2.5 sessions. Looking forward to doing it again soon...

Nice to meet you/drive with you as well!

I had forgotten that was a passing zone up until I saw him give you a point. I dont quite have the firepower to use that passing zone, its a short one. The off could have been much worse than it was, I mean, I could have had flashbacks of playing Gran Turismo and carved left to intentionally T-bone you:cool:

  3. I missed this thread somehow before the event ... What a blast and I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with the e28 !!!

My instructor was impressed with your driving. I was behind you for a bit on the 3rd session and he said "Very good driver, he handles that heavy car well" He drives a 2002 so even my car is heavy to him ;)

What tires were you running? I love your car btw if you couldnt tell from the heart under the pic of it

  4. The Ti has had a pesky leak from the timing covers ever since the PO decided to part her out. Although it isn't horrid, it still erks me. I have all of the gaskets neccessary to change the gaskets on the front end of the motor. From the valve cover, to the seal between the timing covers, to the lower cover gasket itself. I got them all. But my question is, do any of you guys have experience doing this repair within a day or two? You have to pull the crank pulley to remove the lower timing cover. That itself takes 250 foot pounds. lol Anyone who would be willing to help me change these would kindly be rewarded with Skittles and Arizona Ice Teas=D

Breaker bar wedged against the ground + very brief jog of the starter motor = easy crank pulley bolt removal

  5. Anyone know somewhere around Milwaukee where I can get access to some scales to get my car weighed? Weigh station, truck scales, other?? Thanks, Rich

http://catscale.com/cat-scale-locator I went to the one in Oak Creek just off the freeway. I think they charged $9 or maybe it was $19, I cant remember.

Im still needing to weigh mine again. Last weight was 2720 lbs with half tank, no driver, full interior (all seats in place,+junk in glovebox +fire extinguisher) and trunk (spare tire, OE toolkit, jack etc)

Looking to post something in the high 2500's to low 2600's next time. Let me know when you want to go down and I may join you. The buddy system is crucial around truck stops in order to avoid potential trucker rape

Just look at the suspenders!!! :o

  6. If you have H&R Race springs and want a more compliant ride then I have some H&R Sports for trade :D

Hows the 40% lockup? a bit slidey on hot corners?

    Have you weighed the car?

Are you content with the M20 at this point or have any future plans for more gusto?

  7. SO CLOSE!!!! I bet that fuel pump relay got extremely pissed off from all the on/off action. Hopefully you are just a few turns of the allen-key away from getting it going again.
