alright thanks guys! ill have to check them out and see who i think fits best! can anyone give suggestions for bearings should i get the special "coated race" bearings or just the stock oem style bearings?
-
so does anyone know of any good machine shops in the waukesha area that i could take my block to to get it cleaned up and my cylinder head decked for a good price, and honest labor costs???
Also i may get my crankshaft honed let me know any help is appreciated
-
Ik it will probably hurt power but I'm just going with it for now to get the motor together with the turbo and completely rebuilt. from what i've heard from some people is that the cams may help with the turbo setup with the slightly longer duration. but this is my first go round i want to get it together, and see how i like it and go from there
-
so i picked up some 328 cams for cheap with a whole motor that ate a couple valves to put in the m3 to get it running because m3 cams are just ridiculously expensive and the duration is slightly longer with the 328 cams with a slightly shorter lift but i think i'll live with it once i get my tax return back, I'm ordering piston rings, new bearings, get the block hot tanked, and honed, and possibly port and polish the head. and probably coil overs on the suspension side of the project

they weren't in the motor or the boxes of parts i assume he either kept them or lost them when he tore the motor apart or sold them way back when he took it apart because he was going to do a full build but never put it back together

anyone know someone selling s52 cams and trays???? the guy i bought the car said he was going to get me some but thats if he remembers and when oh god i don't want to know so plzzzz it'd be a huge help

lower bearings*
-
ok so i tore the block down and i was looking at everything it looks pretty good, i have several questions
1 are mahle pistons stock for the s52?
2 what do you guys recommend for piston rings for boosting it
3 should i get new lowered bearings? (they have minimal scuffs that can see but can't feel. i feel like i should spend the dough to get the super good ones.
4 is getting the crank micro polished and lightened worth the money,
5 should i upgrade the valve train, (valves, springs, retainers) and also would it be smart to convert to solid lifters?
-
ok so I'm having major problems trying to upload images anyone wanna help??

it is i have the receipt from bavaian auto recycling in californica and if andy is joeys brother the guy i bought it from down in libertyville then yes it was andys old car
-
So i got a 1995 M3 with 99km on it because the odometer switched to that because the battery was dead when i bought it, but anyways, the s52 is in pretty poor condition right now the previous owner tore it apart to do a different turbo setup and never put it on or put it back together so theres some rust inside the pistons and on the cylinder walls, i cleaned up most of the rust with some fine steel wool to take the majority of it off, but now I'm planning to do a full rebuild on the engine and i will be fully caging the car, as well as tubbing the front strut towers, i just pulled the engine out tonight and am going to start disassembling it when i get time, but i was wondering if anyone knows of what brands i should go with for the full rebuild, i'll be using the stock pistons and rods but most everything i want to upgrade so i don't have to worry about it. if anyone has any leads or info to help me out that would be greatly appreciated.

and as far as hg goes and head bolts I'm looking at going for a cut ring hg to run high boost psi, and arp head bolts. the stock ones would literally just break in half from what i plan on running long term in the end.

well currently after picking up the m54b30 rotating assembly any offer that i have the cash for would be an insult so i'd rather wait till i have enough cash to make a respectable offer.....
also does anyone think i'd be able to reuse the piston rings they have 70k on them.... i was thinking i should just replace them cuz every things out, but if i burn them up i wouldn't feel bad tearing the motor down again... just trying to have the car driving with maybe 10lbs of boost by the time automation rolls around. one bearing on the crank isn't smooth like the rest so i'll be doing crank and rod bearings already......
-
yea what would you be willing to part with the manifold for? and the motor mounts?
and I'm not sure on what I'm going to do about tuning haltechs are super nice but id have to save 2k to get one
does anyone know if i could just get the stock ecm retuned???
-
ok nice i'll look into that, anyone have coilovers for an e36 layin around?!? or e36 interior panels i can't afford em right now but next paycheck!!!
-
im not sure on cams i wondering if i could get them reground to work well with the turbo?!?!? if not I'm really not sure on cams they're really expensive and are probably outside my price range currently...
current important parts i need are a turbo exhaust manifold t4 preferably twin scroll cuz i got an hx45w for next to nothing in pretty good condition. intercooler thinking about going water to air but not entirely sure, need to swap the trans.
also need to get crank bearings, new piston rings, maybe electric fan setup since the motor will be out should i do new engine mounts too??
If anyones got a flywheel i have a clutch and also need the shift linkage for the swap i have everything else.
and i think thats about it.... i think i have most everything like piping and what not,

ok cool sounds good I'm tearing down the m54b30 to get the assembly out currently got all the bearings and most of the stuff in the way i just gotta get the sockets to take the rods and pistons off of the crank
-
ok sounds good will do once the full bandana gets back to me on that m54b30 he's trying to get rid of i'll need some help tearing my motor out! so any help would be awesome!!!
-
ps if anyone can get ahold of the full bandana for me i'd really like to take that m54b30 off his hand just short on cash from changing jobs currently
-
No, it starts rough cuz i still haven't change the oil from summer oil royal purple 15w-40 so its like sludge when it sits outside right now but in the garage starts up like its 50 degrees cuz it is in my parents garage. no rough idle when started in the garage, good power through the power band very linear... but 230k miles haha original engine had vanos redone 15k miles ago by po and its now a 4 owner car first owner had it for most of its life and sent it back to bmw to have the strut towers replaced and the 100k mile services done at 100k right near the 10 year mark he paid for shipping and what not then sold it to his friend who had it for a couple years and then sold it to the kid that i bought it from. so its in really good condition for the most part....
ps the kid i bought it from only had it for about 16 months and only drove it for about 3 months then bought a 4cylinder grand am cuz he wanted better gas mileage hahaha
also i have 17" winter tires so for brake upgrade I'm set on rim size already
-
i was getting 120 in all cylinders and 60psi in 3 and 70psi in 4. I did do the test with the engine cold in my garage in wisconsin cold cold last night, cyoung informed me that the full bandana has an m54b30 long block for my build I'm tight on cash as of late due to switching jobs but in the coming weeks my income will become more steady thankfully.
i was looking at doing dual calipers just to have a dedicated handbrake.
thanks for the update with the e46 control arms and spacers I'm going to have to look into that a little bit more, possibly hit lkq salvage in the next couple weeks.
and if anyone knows what kind of size upgrade do you get with the 46 brake swap??? and are the calipers the same piston number just larger or do they have more pistons on the front. I don't want to overpower a car with underpowered brakes... just a safety thing for me
thanks for the input guys!!!!!!

meh not so much a pipe dream just saving up to buy what i need, i have a lead on a full AA turbo kit and am waiting on a response so thats where i stand right now, i've decided to stick with stock internals for this year and keep the power when done around 500 i think that'll be enough to mess with. I've been so busy with work its been hard to give the car any time but once i get the parts i'll make time for it
