An update on the glacial progress of the car. The cardinal interior is in (it has been for a while). Someone sell me some cardinal sport seats! And my spare subframe has been improved. Can you spot the upgrade? Also, has anyone purchased a steering rack from the rack doctor?

Thanks Jeff! If the turnout for Porsche night was this strong, I cant imagine what will show up at exotic car night!

Ok, it's not actually referred to as the wizard head, but it did blow my mind the first time I stared at a picture of one of these motors. Behold...
No, its not a V8. Yes, it is a 4 cylinder with a 16V head that has 8 velocity stacks, and 8 header pipes. Its called the Apfelbeck head. The exhaust and intake valves are across from one another as opposed to being next to each other (read the below articles, because explaining it with words doesn't help much). This helps swirl the intake charge for better combustion. BMW motors like this one were used in the 70's in forumula 2 and hillclimbs. BMW motors paired with March chassis did very well in the 70's, winning 4 championships. I am uncertain if the Apfelbeck head was a championship winning design, but it was present during this period of BMW greatness.
Check out this site for some info. http://touringmm.blogspot.com/2011/07/apfelbeck-zylinderkopf.html. But this next site helped me visualize the design better, even though it's not an Apfelbeck, the principal is similar http://www.speedhunters.com/2013/02/the-triflux/.

Another beautiful evening for the Brew City Cruise yesterday; I suspect it was Porsche night. Below are a few phenomenally average smartphone pics to summarize.
Lots of Porsches in ze haus.
997 GT2 RS. Wasn't expecting this one
I heard the guy next to me confidently tell his friend "oh yeah, that's a Ferrari Dino". lol wut. My first thought was "is that a D-type?" It's more like an uber sweet E-type Jag with a chopped windscreen, triple Weber's, and a paint job that's inspired by a lemans car.
Drool
Happy miata was happy
I like this color combo. Cinnamon leather on silver grey makes feel all tingly in places.
Not sure if this was a real 2.7 RS, but i'd take it.

Was just there this past tuesday and saw a couple e30's there.. and that bmw Vixen camper.. Never knew they made those.. anyone else see that thing there?? I think its been around a couple times
I parked next to it

She's back on her feet with a freshly tightened strut collar nut. No more big clunks, but it still crashes over bumps more than i think it should. Below is a pic of the raw sandblasted bottlecaps which used to be time attacked. Now I need to source a Z3 rack for the next big project phase which includes the z3 rack, replacing the current damaged front subframe with a reinforced and freshly powdercoated one, and brand new control arms. I may throw new shock cartridges in while i'm at it but i haven't decided yet. I discovered that the poop covered damper (pictured in the previous posts) is not completely blown like i thought.

Nasty nasty Bilsteins. What should i replace them with? Bilstein Sports or Koni Yellows?

Time for new front shocks... and control arms... and how much play should there be in the shock mount bearing?
-
So today I was planning on securing the loose strut collar nut that Snap helped me discover, cept I'm not sure how im going to get the shock cartridge down into the strut body ( the picture below was taken with the corner in the air aka full droop). Any ideas? The picture shows, from top to bottom, the strut collar nut, the top of the Bilstein shock, and the top of the strut housing. The shock should be entirely inside the strut housing, and should be captured by the collar nut.
Also, I have sandblasted the wheels that were "time attacked" and reinstalled them on the car (pics eventually) I really like the raw blasted aluminum look, and will likely throw a clear coat on them.

This is inspirational.

I'll probably check this event out.

Ultima GTR. You can build it yourself and throw any motor you want in it. My personal requirement is that the engine must scream, ideally with a v12 rhythm. Other options include Wankel or highly tuned I6 see-->
. Hey, I can dream... -
I'd be willing to help and i'm located close to you, but i'd like to see some of the reward parts (pics of the parts car). Knowing what i'd be helping to fix would be nice. I also have to admit i'm a little sketched out about meeting a stranger by myself in Brown Durr. Lots of questions; allay my fears good sir.

So I ended up attending last nights Brew City Cruise Night, and I'm glad I did. I was just cruising around in the new E30 (testing the new brake job) and upon passing the Highland house I notice a parking lot full of awesome cars. I pull in, and I'm greeted by a man with a coupon for $2 off tap beer for entering (couldn't refuse that) so in i went. I park the BM and lo and behold, our very own Jeff F introduces himself to me (mind has been blown twice now) and gives me the lowdown. I wandered around and found that everyone at the meet was very friendly and I enjoyed checking out the variety of cars in attendance. I've been to the highland house a couple times before (sans car show) and I would recommend it on the drinks and dinner alone; now I really have a reason to go regularly. I cant believe this cool event was under my nose, and I cant believe I just stumbled upon it. Below are some crappy Iphone pics of the event (with a focus on the BMW's in attendance) for your pleasure.
The Ti in the middle had what i believe was an S52.
I really wanted to talk to this porsche owner; I saw this car on sunday at Road America, and this thing makes some incredible turbo noises thanks to some short little zork tubes straight off the twin turbos. Next time.

Nice meeting you at Highland House tonight!
Yes! It was nice meeting you as well. I can't believe I just happened upon such a great event. I think i'll continue to come for the stand up comedy during the prize giveaway.

A BJ party??
Yes, a BJ party; BJ's for everyone.
So this is what a subframe looks like, 50 lbs of coal slag later. Note to self: just clean future subrames up enough to weld on reinforcement plates and be done with it. Now, what color do i powdercoat it... I kind of like the silver color it is now. A slate blue? Eau de nil? Zinc Phospate primer? Black is so 1989.

Welcome!!! Beautiful car.

Good to see the car getting what it deserves. Also, when those lights finally show up, I have some extra fun stuff for you. I guess I don't really need my M20 powder coated valve cover so....
Funny you should mention the valve cover, since i just purchased a valve cover gasket in preparation for refinishing the one on the car. Also, brake parts arrived... Who wants to have a brake job party

that is a common spot for a leak on the gas tank. its probably from the top of the tank. mine did the same thing. i also believe ben's did the same thing. and being me...i just never filled past half tank instead of actually fixing it lol.
It's good to know there is an easy solution
too bad about the nail in the tire I'm excited about this build thread! Get yourself a bentley e30 repair guide if you don't have one. They call them bibles for a reason
I'm pretty sure i didn't sell the one I bought when i had my last E30; I knew I would ride in God's chariot again! Now where did I put it...
Also, I just ordered Brembo blanks, Axxis ultimate pads, and caliper rebuild kits for all corners. Bought Turner front subframe reinforcements as well (currently accepting offers for welding assistance). Need to find a good vendor for a remanufactured Z3 rack next. This could escalate quickly...
-
I had a flat tire today (screw in tire) and while the wheel was off i took a peek a the status of the rear brake pads. Is that a large amount of piston to be extending out of the caliper??? Almost worn down to the backing plate on the sensor side.
This next pic is to orient you for the third pic
I've got gas leaking from what i think is the top of the gas tank (only badly when it is full). Is this a normal spot for a leak? What do you suspect is the issue?
Also, what is this nasty thing below referred to as (i think it covers the battery cable)? I have a strange urge to try to make a new one out of carbon fiber... because America... and i've always wanted to make something out of carbon.

Hey! this is Brian. Glad to see you back in God's Chariot! We definitely need to hit up Blackhawk together this fall. I am planning on going to the BMWCCA/Badger Bimmers event in August again this year. You think you love the E30 now, just wait til you take one on track!
You should drop into the chatroom around 8-9p tonight
I'd love to go to blackhawk.I can be available for a chat tonight.
Do you happen to have a wife named Oprah?
(thought of this when I read your thread title....)
I'm glad someone caught the reference

Hello,
My name is Andrew, and I just purchased Rampelsauce's Delphin E30. I'm not new to E30's; I had a Delphin/Cardinal 1987 325is in high school, but I never modded or tracked the car. I plan to restore this new car where it needs it, lightly mod it, and try my hand at a track day or auto-x this year. I purchased a cardinal interior (I love Delphin/Cardinal) minus seats with the car, so if you have cardinal sports seats, I'm interested:) I'm also looking forward to attending some WI Bimmers events this driving season... if we get a driving season with this crazy weather!
Pic of the car (which many of you have seen before i'm sure):
Below is the old car, which i'm starting to think was resprayed, because it doesn't look exactly like Delphin. I sold this car to some guy (lost his contact info) who lived on Milwaukee's east side/upper east side and I haven't seen it since. Let me know if you see her:)
