  1. Well those gold bolts are $160 for 120 of them so I'll have to find something more cost effective. I soaked the bolts in vinegar to get the corrosion off and I'm going to use a wire wheel and drill to really get them clean. I'm sure I could get paint them myself but the paint probably wouldn't last to long so I need to figure out some way to do that. So what I'm thinking is refinish the faces to give them a nice shine, paint the centers gun metal grey, and get my bolts gold somehow.

  2. This is kinda far off in the process but do you know if I could get the centers powered coated at any old paint shop? or is it normally a specialty place? Also Chris suggested me getting the bolts zinc coated, do you know anything about that?

  3. I also enjoy the gun metal faces, but I am biased from my old set.

TJ sprayed the faces OEM Arctic Grey before I got them from the guy he sold them to

What color are your bolts in those pictures? I can't tell if they are a bronze or copper. Those wheels look great! I may think about doing something like that then.

  4. Last weekend was not as productive as I wanted but when do you ever get as much done as you want to. I did find rebuilt calipers at AutoZone for $45 after core charge which is pretty sweet. Also a bud of mine down here told me about a shop that he goes to so I'm hoping to get over there this weekend and figure some stuff out, possibly drop my car off for them to do the drive line stuff for me. I don't really have the capabilities down here anyways. I did get started on my wheels though!

As you can tell I didn't get very far but I know how it all works now so the rest of the wheels shouldn't take long at all to take apart and wash up. I'm using this DIY I found http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?1156455-*DIY-Refinishing-style-5-s-BIG-pictures. It's going to take a while to get them really nice but it will be worth it. I was thinking about getting the centers powder coated gun metal grey, what do you guys think?

Hopefully I'll get a little more done this weekend and possibly get my car to that shop but you never know.

  5. Welcome! I actually live down in South Carolina during the school year (I go to The Citadel in Charleston). I have a quick question for you, do you know of any southeast or maybe even South Carolina forum/clubs I could get into? I'm having trouble connecting down here and it seems like all the forum I do find are dead.

  6. Are you coming to the october port washington meet sponsored by the former owner of a canadian and euro e30s

Unfortunately no I won't be able to make it. I'm at school right now in South Carolina so I won't be back up north till this winter. I'm trying to find some meets to go to around here but the carloinaeuros forum I tried getting into has been dead for months so I'll have to try some other sites. Hard to find forums as great as wibimmers.

  7. Finally getting around to doing a little work on my car this weekend. I plan on doing some prep work for rebuilding the rear calipers and maybe even taking the exhaust off. Worst comes to worst and I'll start refinishing the wheels. I'm really excited to start getting some work done though  :D

  8. I thought I would do a little update post since Chris did all the posting for me on my trip (thanks by the way ;) ). My car is still sitting in Summerville, SC at my grandparents place. It's about 30 minutes away from me in Charleston and I haven't been able to get out there to do any work yet. I did start her up this past Sunday, she started right away and sounded great so I've got that going for me. I did my research and sourced parts for what I think is wrong as of right now. My plan is to rebuild all 4 calipers and replacing the pistons on the front two. I'm pretty sure the front right caliper is stuck open causing the pads to rattle around in the mounts. This also giving my car's computer the illusion that the pads where low because there wasn't any pressure on the pads. When I looked at the calipers there was a good layer of rust and corrosion on the pistons that possibly could have seized it up and they didn't budge when I went at them with a C-clamp. I tried moving all the arms down there around but not one moved even a little. There were some sketchy bushings but that's a job for another day. I set a budget of $250 to rebuild all of the calipers, this includes new seals, gaskets, anti-rattle clips (somehow I'm missing 3 of the 4), wear sensors, front pistons, shipping and lubes/ cleaning crap. I was thinking about getting all the parts sand blasted and then putting a protective coat on as well. I will have to find a place to do this down here but does anyone have any idea how much it would cost for sand blasting?

Now for the drive shaft...I have a guibo and center bearing at home so I'll have Chris send them down here. Once I get 6 new lock-tight bolts and nuts (M17 I believe?) and a drive shaft centering bushing (According to E34website.net) I'll replace all those parts. At this point all take her to a repair shop of the sorts and have them check out the drive shaft to ensure that no other parts need to be replaced (such as the CV joint, which is around $180). Hopefully I shouldn't need to buy too much more for the drive shaft project but it will probably cost around $100 for them to inspect my car to I set my overall estimated cost at $450. Then my car should be drive-able once again :D .

I also brought my style 5s down planning on sanding/cleaning them up so I could put a nice set of summer tires on, because it's summer all year around down here . Anyone have any good DIY for cleaning up your wheels? I would really appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction. For some motivation, I found this picture which is a sneak peak to what my car will look like when the wheels are done.

I have a lot of work to do but I'm excited to get it done. I'm just waiting on the Marine Corps to start paying me this semester so I can kick this all off. I will probably be able to get some stuff done in 2 weekends but we will see what happens.

  9. Back of the engine on a v8, most likely a valley pan which is under the intake manifold. e34's are known to have bad heater cores but that would be leaking inside the car. Otherwise there are some 2 coolant hoses that go to the heater core in the engine bay. Id inspect the valley pan and go from there. If no leak is visually seen there then pressure test the system and inspect.

Are you talking about #5 in the diagram?

  10. My car has been losing coolant since I've gotten it. At first there was a crack in a tube going from the reservoir to the radiator but I fixed that up. Then I kept getting losing coolant after that but I didn't see anything dripping so I assumed it was a leaking head gasket. Now the dripping is back and it is coming from the back of the engine block, it is dripping on to the down pipe of the exhaust and around that general area. I'm thinking it is the heater core or maybe some tubes going to the heater core. Anyone have any ideas? If I do need to get a new heater core, are they all $150 or does someone know where you can get a better priced one. Thanks!

  11. I'm living in Cudahy and I work at Shorewood High School guarding at the pool. I will have to stop by and check out the car, looks really nice from the pictures. Honestly if you don't mind or want, I could help out with doing your subframe or at least see how the job is done. Give me at least a slight idea of what the hell I'm doing :P plus its always great to put forum names to faces. I'm going to be doing the subframe bushing on my e34 540i but like I said I'm gone next week but maybe we can work something out, if your up for it of course.

  12. Strange first post, as I've not gotten around to introducing myself first...

Anyway, I'm going to have a go at making / using one of these soon:

I don't know what your schedule is for the work, but I'd be happy to lend it to you once I'm done.

Well I'm the first that gets to say welcome! Thanks for the offer as well. What car are you going to be using this on and what job? I'm going to be out of town next week so I won't be doing anything for a while still. Where are you from? I'm living in Milwaukee during the week right now.

  13. i may or may not have witnessed this car do a burnout in brookfield square.

    it was awesome

That was my first experiment with no traction control so thats why it was terrible  :P I did get it into a second gear burnout though . There may or may not be a burnout at scooters this weekend...

I really dug being parked next to your car at the E30 picnic. Our paints look so different next to eachother and your wide grilles and m tech kit make your car look much different=)

Are you going to any of the meets in Milwaukee this weekend? I would like to meet your green e34 since we have this club going.

    Voila!

    Thanks!

  14. Thought I would do a little update. Didn't end up getting any work done last sunday but that give me more time to get some parts together. Does anyone know where to get or have a BMW Bushing Puller Tool? I need one to get the subframe bushing job done and I can't find anywhere to rent them online. Do dealers have them or possibly A to Z? Anyways I want to get that done in the near future and once that is finished I'll be replacing either the control arms or more of the front suspension as well. I found some kits, http://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-control-arm-kit-6-piece-e34-e346piecesteel-l and I have to figure out if I have the money to do more then just the control arms. There is a some shaking in the front drivers side when I brake lightly and people online seem to say that is the problem. Also when I tried replacing my fog light bulb the light wouldn't come out the front of the valence like the bentley said it should. It is stuck on the left side of the light somehow, almost like the light is to big for it to come out the front but it can't go to the back either. If anyone has some tips feel free to chime in. Also please let me know if you know anything about  BMW Bushing Puller Tools.

In other news, I went to cars and coffee with Chris and a couple friends from Waunakee. It was awesome! My car showed up on the Car & Coffee Facebook page, here is the pic.

Pat also took a video from his phone but its on Facebook and we've had some problems trying to get those to play on here so he will have to post it if he wants to share. It was a great time hanging with people from the forum and meeting a couple new members.

  15. Late post but I finally got home on Monday night. Chris picked me up from the airport and I got to drive her for the first time  :D. Well actually the first thing I did was have chris start the car for me  :P. This is in the parking garage of O'Hare.

I've been driving it a ton lately, drove from O'hare to Milwaukee then Milwaukee to Madison the next day. The car is great, pulls hard and the only really bad problem is the bushing in the rear is pretty noisy. Chris and I are planning on work on it on June 1st. Shop party in Sun Prairie? I spent some time cleaning the car with my buddy in Waunakee and had my little bro take some pictures. Chris also threw some new wheels on so now I have some tread.
