I still have one. It has done us well. the wife has used it as "Moms Taxi" for a decade without major issues. I did the timing guides a few years ago.

Time consuming project. but, not vary complicated. it took me 3 weekends to tear-down and replace. When you do it for your self your replace more stuff while your in there.

The "taxi" has 228k on it now,. Has some rust around the corners, but starts and drives well. Will be getting out of the E38 biz this spring, once I get  my e34's sorted.

in a dream world where i could afford the maintenance, i'd have a  Mora or Estoril 6-speed M-sport 740 (with a blower) for daily duties. its the best looking big car BMW has ever designed.

The maintenance  isn't as bad as its made out to be. it's no E30,  but not a nightmare like all the 7's  that followed. The M62tu is a good engine,  just plan on a shotgun repair for the whole timing guide, gaskets, and cooling system and she'll run forever. When I did the guides with 175k on the clock,  i was surprised to find original grinding marks on all the cams with only the tips of the lobes polished smooth.  Like the E30 and E34's most repairs are well documented online.  Beisan systems has a great writeup I followed for the vanos/guides install. http://www.beisansystems.com/procedures/m62tu_vanos_procedure.htm

A E38 sporty shorty is the the best looking 7' out there.  If I had the time and resources to create one of these. I'd do it in a heartbeat.
