The exhausts are really easy to drop on these cars, although I don't know what your header setup looks like. Wouldn't be a bad idea to drop it all and make sure the exhaust manifold gaskets weren't reused and part of the current problem.

Good Call. I'm planning on doing some work on it tomorrow.  I keep y'all updated.

The Barriques on Mckee road. Everybody parks on the left along the pond. This Sunday is Lake Mills C&C though so I'll be there! A few of us on the forum regularly attend that as well and chit chat all morning.

Awe man I'm not sure I can make it this weekend (Inlaws in town). I will definitely be at Barriques one of these weekends!

Welcome! I am also in the Madison area. I am on the eastside in Cottage Grove / Sun Prairie depending on the time of day.  I will see you at the Devils Drive!

Hey JDesign! looking forward to checking out that E30! Love the tan top!

try wrapping the holes with exhaust wrap to see how it sounds. you wont have to drop it for that. (if they are accessible)

That's what I was going to do originally, but it is too tight to the undercarriage to get above it.  I'll drop/weld it this weekend and let y'all know how it goes.

unless you have a moral obligation towards our environment, then don't bother with the catalytic converter. but if its still on the car, i'd leave it. if the car is lacking one completely and the PO replaced it with straight pipes, I'd go with a resonator instead - it will make the car sound better. resonators will take some the 'harshness' or 'rasp' out, although the m20 doesnt have a lot of that to begin with.

you didnt explain what is on the car - what did the PO modify?

Exhaust leaks are 100% the reason your car doesn't sound good. 1st thing I'd try is just drop the exhaust and weld up any holes. If you still don't like the sound, add a resonator like Dan said. It will have the same (if not better) effect as a cat and will cost a lot less.

Currently it has aftermarket header with straight pipes back to the stock(?) muffler. I plan on welding up the holes, but don't want to have to drop the exhaust twice.  I hadn't looked into resonators.  Thanks for the tips, I may just weld the leaks this weekend and see how it sounds.

They scrap them because of the valuable metals inside. An aftermarket cat would do you just fine. Otherwise you can weld it up as is and forget the cat all together.

Have you heard an E30 without a CAT? Do they sound good? Right now mine sounds terrible.

  7. Woah. The cat listed on here is not cheap!

No. Description Supp. Qty  From   Up To  Part Number Price   Notes
    01 RP-exhaust pipe catalytic converter   1     11761716743 $2227.41   ENDED

I was looking at a universal one for $99.  I wonder if it's worth the time to weld up the leaks and see how it sounds.  Do you have a cat on your 325? The way yours sounds is exactly what I am looking for.

  8. I have a '91 325i Vert and bought the car with an exhaust leak.  Most of the system is in great shape, but the previous owner shouldn't have been allowed near a welder.  I have 2 seams that weren't welded all the way around.  I am 90% sure he attached the exhaust system and welded it together later. The car sounds awful. Anyways the leak is near the passenger seat of the car. Do I drop the exhaust and weld up the seams or add a catalytic converter for a more stock exhaust tone?

I have been searching for an exhaust schematic and can't find anything about a cat, just a forward muffler.  If anyone has any E30 exhaust advise I need it.

    Thanks!

Sweet. I'm from Madison as well. Make sure to check out the C&C group that meets at Barriques in Fitchburg every Sunday (except when Lake Mills C&c goes on). They meet around 9am and it's a great group of local car guys. I'll be there pretty regularly now, would be great to meet up with you!

YoungCR! Which Barriques? That sounds like a blast!

I have been looking for a good meetup/club in Madison since I got my car. I ended up joining Madbrits just to get into a local club. I wonder if there would be a big enough group to start a German/Euro car club in the area to set up cruises/shows/meetups. I am definitely going to try to be at the Devil's Drive!

  10. Checking out breweries all around Madison and the surrounding area.  My picture is from the Hophaus in Verona, WI.  Definitely recommend! Beer was pretty tasty!

I haven't ventured too far away.  After a new rack and pinion/tie rods I took her in for an alignment and apparently my rear tires are from 1991. Need to hunt down some 15's and get new tires before any long trips.

straight6pwr I love the hatch! I hope that drool softens up my leather! haha

  11. I'm new to the Bimmer forums and figured a more local one would be the way to go! I got my E30 vert at the beginning of summer and have been working on it since! It was in pretty rough shape. I've had it driveable for the last month or so and have been enjoying it on nice days! Great for hitting up the local breweries and stuff.

Looking forward to becoming part of the community!
