  1. I've been delinquent, sorry Chris! Chris hand delivered my gift the day before Christmas (in the dense fog no less), very appreciated and the gift is awesome!!

    Super excited to get this hanging up in the house and the stickers will go very nicely on the workbench cabinets I'm putting up in the garage!

  2. I have an ozone machine if you want to borrow it. My brother used it to get cigarette smoke smell out of his XJ and it worked amazingly, haven't had a whiff of it since. You could put it in the car with the air running.

    I did replace the cabin air filter sometime in 2022 with an oem one but worth a check anyway.

    I think this one is the only one in the area that allows 4x4's, I was stoked to find there was something worth going to for a day trip! The wife and I are road tripping to the smokey mountains in Tennessee next month so I've been looking around for some trails to explore in that area or on the way while we're out there, thinking about taking a drive on the tail of the dragon while we're there too. We're also flying out to Moab in November so I wont have the Bronco there, but I will be doing a Bronco driving experience through Ford while we're there that's basically a guided day on trails all over the area which should be really cool. The dunes in Michigan is something I'd love to do at some point too, maybe next summer!

  4. Not BMW related but fun car stuff so figured I'd share. I took the Bronco for a day trip to Tigerton OHV park on Labor day and spent the day exploring the trails there.

    Didn't take pics of any of the harder stuff but we got into some proper rock crawling in a few places where the skid plates and lockers came in handy. The only bummer of the day was that my wheels picked up a few scrape marks from some hidden rocks in a very avoidable (lol) mud hole... I'm considering switching them out to some steelies from a black diamond model so I don't need to worry about it as much next time. 10/10 though, would do it again.

    Might be easiest to just meet up at some point, the google account it's tied to is the one I use for basically everything. Could do basically any coding changes (like getting rid of the annoying legal disclaimer every time you start the car if you have idrive) if you wanted too. 

  6. So I was working on my basement over the weekend and went to move the original seats from this car. As I carried them across the basement at an awkward angle a coin fell out from somewhere deep in the seat and went pinging across the floor. I figured it was a quarter or something. Nope. It's a 1988 Austrian 1 schilling coin.

    I did some googling and Austria switched to the euro at the start of 2002... so either someone went on a European vacation and lost a coin when they got home, it's been in the seat since the car was built, or the car spent some time in Europe. Either way it's pretty neat.

    Yep, putting my order in today. My first real ride over the weekend exposed how not great they were. No panic stops needed but I don’t want to have to rely on them as they currently sit. 
     

    That’s kinda what I’m thinking, it’ll be a good chassis to grow into as far as ability while still keeping it reasonable as far as price. Were your eagle setups problematic out of the box or is it more of a wear over time issue that they can be fiddly with?

    I stopped at wheel and sprocket the other day and they said they can order one in for me anytime when I want to test ride, so once the e28 is running and ready to get gone I’ll have them bring one in. 
     

    I did see a 2020 X-Caliber 8 for $800 on marketplace this morning though, which is tempting 😂 I think I want the Roscoe geometry though

     

    I think the fiddly setup is more a comment on 12 speed drivetrains than a specific brand, it just means less spacing between each gear so it takes less misalignment to cause a problem. That being said, having the huge range of ratios on a 1x drivetrain FAR outweighs any downsides. I don't have any experience with shimano MTB drivetrains but I've been completely happy with eagle after ~5 seasons of using it in various forms. 

     

    99spokes.com has some great comparison tools like @B C mentioned, you can visualize the frame geometry differences between the Roscoe and X-Caliber:

    It really depends on what type of riding you want to do. If you're plan is to get into racing or cranking out a lot of mileage on smoother trails the X-caliber would be the right choice, but if your interest is casual riding for fun the Roscoe would be a better fit. If it were me, I'd definitely go Roscoe between the two. The more modern geometry (slacker head tube, steeper seat tube, etc.) will be generally a lot more stable and confidence inspiring, it'll be more forgiving of questionable line choices too.

  8. Nick pick up on the road bike! A pad swap will probably make a huge difference in braking, kool stops have been my go to for rim brakes.

     

    I'd say the roscoe 8 would be a great hardtail, solid component set and good geometry. One of those would be more than capable enough for just about every trail in the area. I have Sram eagle drivetrains on both of my MTBs (GX on the trail bike, NX on the fat bike) and have zero complaints, they are a little fiddly to set up once dialed in I think it works really well. Since basically every bike shop around here is a trek dealer you could definitely go take a test ride on one and see how you like it! They might even do demos where you could take one out to a trail.

    Thanks! Having a 3d printer that can print in durable materials has opened up a lot of possibilities for all kinds of fun stuff.

    Thanks! And nope, my car had the base sound system so I didn't have a factory amp at all. I used a Sony XMS400D amp inline with the speaker wiring. It basically takes the 4 speaker level inputs from the headunit and puts out 45watts RMS to each speaker.

    After much thinking and hunting around I finally came up with a solution to put 5x7 speakers in the rear parcel shelf without cutting big holes or looking like someone landed a UFO back there.

     

    Before I did anything with the speakers themselves I figured now's the time to refresh the parcel shelf itself. I had a spare standard speaker parcel shelf so I used the markings on the back and opened up the speaker cutouts and moved the mounting clips to the premium speaker layout. Since every parcel shelf is now faded to a lovely shade of light blurple I gave it a couple coats of black duplicolor vinyl/fabric dye and cleaned up all the plastic parts.

    Once that was done (and after letting it dry for about 3-4 months), I got into swapping things out. With the old parcel shelf out, I added some sound deadening over any holes in the sheet metal and a few spots that made a lot of noise  when tapping on it. My thinking on doing this was it should help the speakers perform better/keep more sound in the cabin/maybe reduce some road noise bleeding through from the trunk.

    Side note: I've always hated the tan rear seat in my car ever since I put it in. Its in really good shape and the original plan was to dye it eventually, but I realized I have a perfectly good black sedan back seat sitting in my basement. My car is a coupe so the seat isn't a perfect fit, but I also happen to have the rear carpet section from that sedan so I swapped that in as well to get everything looking as factory as possible. While it still isn't blue, it looks so much better.

    Back to the speakers. After much hunting around and thinking, I came across these speaker grills from a 90's ford van/ranger/etc. that had an identical grille pattern to the kick panel speakers in the front. I found someone selling NOS ones and ordered a pair. With the new decklid in place, and the grill/speaker (Polk audio DB+ 5x7 coaxial) in hand, I designed and 3d printed the adapter to make it all work.

    The adapter has slotted holes to screw into the factory e30 parcel shelf premium speaker clips so you can shift them around and maximize speaker clearance, matches the profile of the ford speaker grilles, and spaces the speaker up high enough to require no hammering/cutting of the sheet metal underneath. It is printed in ASA which is UV stable and should have zero issues dealing with the heat inside a car parked in the sun. To finalize the fit and finish, I screwed the speaker grille to the adapter and sanded the outer profile as a unit to get rid of layer lines and align everything perfectly.

    I obviously didn't want a gray speaker cover, so that got scuffed up and sprayed black with adhesion promoter and SEM trim paint. The adapter was then sprayed with adhesion promoter and filler primer, sanded smooth, then another coat of adhesion promoter to re-coat any exposed plastic, textured black paint, and a final top coat of SEM trim black. I did this same process on the tweeter pods and it's held up perfectly so far. 

     

    With everything painted it was time to mount it all up! Here is the adapter mounted to the parcel shelf:

    Then the speaker gets mounted to the underside of the ford speaker grille. To fit the speaker I did have to remove a trim ring/spacer from the top side of the speaker and use a tin snips to remove the outer mounting tabs/trim a bit of excess material on the other mounting tabs. Also, because of the placement of the wire connections, I bent the connectors outwards 90 degrees so that they would clear the parcel shelf without having to cut a notch in it.

    I then mounted the speaker assembly to the adapter in the car and went back and did the whole thing a second time!

    Couldn't be more stoked on the end result! It looks very factory and the sound improvement over the previous 5 1/4" coaxial speakers is huge.

I was shocked at how well laid out everything was once the belly pan came off, I think mechanically the swap shouldn’t be bad at all. The DME coding looks like a challenge, but I’ll figure it out. 

    Believe it or not, the coding changes shouldn't be that bad. Bimmergeeks protool can change the vehicle order and then appropriately code every subsequent module to match.
